| [#1987] West Kowloon Cultural District The Grote Zaal ("big hall") seats 2037, and is 44 meters (144 feet) long, 28 meters (92 feet) wide, and 17 meters (56 feet) high. Its reverberation time is 2.8 seconds without audience, 2.2 seconds with, making it ideal for the late Romantic repertoire such as Mahler. When the Concertgebouw was built, acoustics were something of a black art. As in shipbuilding, designers drew upon what had worked in the past without entirely understanding the underlying science (and even today it is still not well understood). When the building was completed, the acoustics were not perfect, and a lot of effort went into fine-tuning the aural ambience. During later restorations, particular care has been taken not to alter the materials used for interior decoration with this in mind. Concertgebouw Amsterdam  |

| [#1989] What are you listening to? 有沒有發覺，現在的小提琴CD（尤其是大公司的）多數是由三十歲以下的人演奏的？四十歲的小提琴家還有點錄音，五六十歲的名家如Perlman或Kremer的新錄音少之又少？大家還在聽的Heifetz或Oistrakh舊錄音，不少是他們五六十歲錄的。在鋼琴界，並無這種薴f當道的情形。 就算你不喜歡郎朗，也不否認他的確令人有點「前所未見」，是前所未見的好，還是前所未見的俗，自行決定。現在的年輕小提琴家卻沒有這種一出道，就君臨天下，叫前輩膽怯的光采。他們當然有相當的virtuosity，但這種virtuosity只不過是拉到難曲，而不是武藝高深。 這是我聽的第二隻Julia Fischer，上一隻聽的是莫扎特協奏曲，聽不完。這次的老柴，聽得出她纖幼的音質，音量小，tone也幼。如果正常的老柴是羅宋湯，Fischer拉的就是白菜清湯，還要是涼的。雖然不一定要拉得Oistrakh那般「高脂肪」，但Fischer卻不以爽一點的速度，及強一點的節奏或劇力，來彌補音量音質的不足。我不認為可以用「不同人有不同拉法」為Fischer開脫，因為這曲是熱情的，這是基本要求，要不就拉得凌厲。至於Serenade melancolique一點也不憂鬱，像莫扎特多過柴可夫斯基。 到底是錄音的問題，是Fischer的問題，還是琴的問題呢？在這隻碟中，高音缺乏像光環的那一點 overtone，中及低音像中提琴般，有點鼻音，G弦則像D弦。在Souvenir d'un lieu cher第一樂章中段的華彩段，聽到琴弓由於大力下壓，與琴弦磨擦的刮聲，但琴音卻還是軟弱的。如果錄音沒問題，Fischer還是滿意這支琴，我就十分懷疑她的判斷。不厭其煩講多次，我聽的是CD那層。 伴奏方面，我思疑樂隊的人數很少，我猜大約40人，樂隊的聲響比較像巴哈或莫扎特協奏曲的伴奏。但錄音師將木管的低音，及法國號錄得不錯，值得留意。最後由Kreizberg鋼琴伴奏的Souvenir d'un lieu cher又有那個錄音問題：近得像把頭伸進鋼琴般。聽頭半分鐘，怎有可能彈幾個中低音，餘響就可以填滿整個空間？錄音師將這部鋼琴，錄得像尋常百姓家的直立琴，My God! | [#1990] What are you listening to? 串 想不到，Milstein竟然是金句串星。 Zukerman 問：「如果當初你不拉琴，你會做甚麼？」 milstein 答：「我怎知？」 問的人是Zukerman，在片中有十多分鐘的片段，是他與Milstein的對談。Zukerman的說話，具美式浮誇，俗不可耐。不過，Milstein有時也挺受落。兩人共晉晚嚏AMilstein見Zukerman只顧說話，叫他吃點東西： Zukerman：Never mind, we have all night. Milstein：I don't have all night. 這套紀錄片在Milstein傷手退休後拍攝，其實有不少內容，在Milstein的回憶錄也有提及，提問者甚至一開口就問：In your book…，彷彿要Milstein親口說一遍般。而且提問者的口氣，雖不算是審犯，卻有如政府部門的櫃台職員般，冷漠且有點不禮，不像兩人閒談，是訪問大忌。如果你看過這紀錄片，意猶未盡，好應看一下回憶錄From Russia to the West，Milstein口述，Solomon Volkov筆錄。其實Milstein的口德不算好，所以可讀性高，但不要盡信。 碟二是Milstein最後演奏會中，Kreutzer Sonata及Chaconne的片段，共長五十分鐘。Kreutzer拉得太隨便，音準不大可靠，常拉出很刺耳的聲音。你可能會質疑，為甚麼要對一個八十二歲的老人那麼挑剔。如果他整張碟都拉得這樣，我一定不會挑他的毛病，但在Chaconne及紀錄片中的Paganini（都是同一場演出），表現好得多，有比較才會有此評語。  |

Sei Solo,除了六首獨奏外還可譯作"你是孤獨的"............. 一個演奏者很少會相同曲目錄兩次,通常是錄音技術有所突破,不然就是風格有所轉變,Kremer這一個永遠走在前面的小提琴手,80年代在Philips曾留下一次巴哈無伴奏全集的錄音,今年在ECM又重新錄製了一次,外在客觀因素最大差別一個就是小提琴從Stradivari換成現在用的Guarneri del Gesu ex-David,琴聲比起上一次更有穿透力;另一個就是從五大廠之一的Philips換成ECM,本來就前衛不喜歡受傳統拘束的Kremer這次在完全不以商業利益作考量的新東家ECM,節奏的選擇更為自由奔放。 上一次在Philip的錄音其實已經相當與眾不同,速度相當快,運弓犀利, 像是一個年輕的藝術家想推翻傳統似的,雖然過癮但總覺得少了點什麼,這次在ECM的錄音,Kremer多了20幾年的歲月歷練,和現代音樂演出的影響,這份錄音表現的更加深思熟慮,在斷句和彈性速度也更自由而且特別,值得一提的是Guarneri的琴聲配上ECM乾淨發燒的錄音聽起來實在相當過癮,琴音相當乾淨,和絃聽起來實在有夠漂亮,詮釋上比起上一次深刻多了,速度和動態對比很大,像是其中的夏康舞曲,上一次的錄音就像油門催到底,這次明顯多了一些情感的成分,而且換檔不留痕跡,我承認我對Kremer一直有著強烈的崇拜,但是我還是得很主觀的說,他的夏康是我聽過最強烈最深入我心,不只是夏康,整份錄音都相當偉大!!! btw,kremer的技巧真的越來越好,之前運弓的雜音現在都變的很乾淨,還有就是弱音的部分令人著迷,我不知道該怎麼形容,大概是經過現代音樂的洗禮,音色很乾淨漂亮,但絕不是Perlman或是Szeryng那種漂亮! 我一直很喜愛ECM的專輯封面,簡單又純粹,不用演奏者的沙龍照,讓音樂回歸音樂本身,這張專輯放了巴哈的手稿,Sei Solo,你是孤獨的,你又是指誰?Bach?Kremer?或是聽眾  |

Erictang: If you wanna to listen Sibelius Violin Concerto, apart from the definite version of Heifetz RCA's account, you better try Vengerov x Barenboim with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, his account has been underrated among the contemporary violinist. Vengerov and Barenboim delivers us a weight and gravity in a spontaneous manner, the great melodies of the first two movements of the Sibelius are given an inner heartfelt intensity rarely matched, and with the finale (called as "the ballet of North-arctic bear") skirting danger with thrilling abandon. Vengerov delivers us the music with magnetic, volatile personality in a focused pacing and steady tempo, Barenboim accompanied him to give us a flow without a hint of sentimentality yet with an extra poignancy!! | [#1998] What are you listening to? I remember we had a fairly elaborated discussion on concert halls in the Quad thread sometime ago. According to the authoritative study by Leo Beranek and which is published in his book "How they sound - concert and opera halls, there are only 3 concert halls unanimously (or nearly) rated as the best in the world, namely Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Symphony Hall in Boston and Gr. Musikvereinssaal in Vienna. Six are rated as "second best" - Stadt-Casino in Basel, Konzerthaus (Schauspielhaus) in Berlin, St. David's Hall in Cardiff (Wales), Carnegie Hall in New York, Hamarikyu Asahi in Tokyo and Grosser Tonhallesaal in Zurich. All others are not in the same league.  |
