| [#2049] 右翼指揮 - Thielemann 自從Thielemann稱呼巴倫邦 (Daniel Barenboim)為that Jew後，右翼已成為他的標記，近年DG唱片封套英文化，即以英文作第一語言，在這堣]變回德文。這十年來，頂級的德國樂團及歌劇院絕多由外國人掌理，聽這張CD要問一個問題：Thielemann能否重振德國指揮的聲威？ 聲響上，Thielemann的慕尼黑愛樂，木管融合在弦樂之中，不會穿出來，銅管聲音圓渾，最重要是低音%實，比現在的其他德國樂隊更接近卡拉揚時期的柏林愛樂。 但這是一個虎頭蛇尾的演奏，第一樂章氣勢聲響俱足，就算指揮在轉折位或轉調時拉慢速度，狀甚突兀，也不要緊。第二樂章沒有激情，也沒有drama；第四樂章缺乏動力，只在結尾發力，但又缺乏火花。樂章開頭的法國號獨奏，速度慢得太誇張了(儘管無像Celibidache 這樣慢) 。 CD另附Egmont序曲，使長度剛剛60分鐘，不過序曲也憤慨不足，到最後的凱旋也沒有狂喜。布拉姆斯長度51分鐘，是因為第一樂章重覆的緣故，這CD並不抵聽。 Beethoven: Egmont Overture Brahms: Symphony No.1 Munchner Philharmoniker Christian Thielemann DG 477 6404 (CD)  |

| [#2050] Beethoven violin sonata played by Ferras After several Boring night of Beethoven piano soanatas by Erik Heidseck, I finally give up, Heidseck palying was too polite, lacking the passion and anger in Beethoven's music. Last night, listened to Beethoven violin sonatas played by Christian Ferras and Barbizet, Ferras was well known as the favorite violinist of Karajan and he have recorded all major violin concerto with Karajan. However, he is a remarkable violist himself, he have a warm violin tone and his collaboration with Barbizet were as good as any. Although the record was in Mono, the result were not bad either. Without doubt, Oistrakh were more expresive and Perlman/Ashkenasy were more dramatic, but Ferras account were natural and lively which can certain do justic to early Beethoven's violin sonatas. Following are some stories on how this violin duo meet: Ferras' partnership with Pierre Barbizet (1922-1990) was also famous. They met in 1948 or 9, either - the reminiscences of Ferras and Barbizet differed slightly here - at the Scheveningen competition in Den Haag, the Netherlands (chaired by Menuhin, who like Ferras was an Enescu pupil), in which Ferras shared 1st prize for violin with Michel Schwalbm (who was to become Karajan's concertmaster at the Berlin PO) while Barbizet took 1st prize in piano, or at the Marguerite Long in Paris (Barbizet got the 5th prize in piano - Aldo Ciccolini and Ventsislav Yankoff shared 1st - and Ferras the 2nd Prize in violin with no first Prize awarded in that category). Though Barbizet was Ferras' elder by 11 years, they struck at once an artistic kinship and personal friendship, Barbizet acting as a second father to the young fiddler and introducer to literature and arts. Said Ferras: "I discovered not an accompanist but a companion. We understood each other without having to explain anything", echoed by Barbizet: "he felt me, he felt what I was going to do... Luck is when you find someone who is your complement, two identities that add up to do the one and same thing". And Karajan said the same: "his genius is the prescience of how his partner will play".  |

| [#2051] Virtuoso Cello Showpieces 這碟的曲目有兩點不誠實，先是有一半的曲目不能算virtuoso showpieces，另外Dvorak的Sonatina原本是寫給小提琴，無論封底及小冊子都沒有提及。頭三軌的確既炫技又冷門。Orr是二十世紀英國作曲家，這首卡門幻想曲用上不少卡門的旋律，以類此華彩段的樂段將之串連。Orr作此曲給大提琴家作encore之用，不過一首encore要十四分鐘好像過長了。 Danzi用Don Giovanni的La ci darem la mano作主題，而Castelnuovo-Tedesco用羅西尼的Largo al Factorum作的變奏，則較符合炫技的定義，臨尾的Figaro Figaro Figaro…也挺精彩的。Cassado的作品則與歌劇無關，是一首抒情的曲子，這陯liegel的演奏令人不快，因為她一拉長音，就感覺到她的右手不穩定，而她的左手好像總在不適當的地方揉弦，timbre怪怪的，這問題在Dvorak的Silent Woods也有出現。要是Naxos及Kliegel肯認真一點找真正virtuoso showpiece，雖然琴技及音響一般，這會是更有趣的CD Cassado: Lamento de Boabdil Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Figaro Variations Danzi: Don Giovanni Variations Dvorak: Rondo, Silent Woods, Sonatina in G (arr. for cello) Orr: A Carmen Fantasy Maria Kliegel (cello) Nina Tichman (piano) Naxos 8.557613 (CD)  |

| [#2053] Virtuoso Cello Showpieces Maria Kliegel records exclusively with Naxos and there are now tonnes of her recordings. Not a lot are really worth the while but amongst which her Shostakovich cello concertos are the better. She has another recording with Nina Tichman on Beethoven's sonatas 1 & 2, of which I much prefer the younger Anne Gastinel's reading. |

Hyperion巴哈鋼琴改編第五集，改編者全為蘇俄作曲家（包括流亡西方的Siloti），也可以分成兩類：一．Siloti的改編曲及二．其餘三人的改編。 第二類全都是管風琴曲，佔全碟三分之二，幾日前談這系列的第六集（Rummel）已明言對從管風琴改編興趣較少，但還有兩首值得留意：Goedicke編的BWV539前奏及賦格中的賦格，正是第一無伴奏小提琴組曲，巴哈自己從小提琴改編到管風琴（也轉了調）。另外 Catoire改編的BWV582 Passacaglia就將管風琴的深沉音色盡量移植，而樂曲本身也是一個tour de force，在現場彈一定嚇一跳。 Siloti的改編對蘇俄鋼琴家影響甚深，Richter，Gilels及Sokolov在西方彈不少。這堿D選的 Siloti改編，全部都是短曲，也有名曲如Air on G String及Siciliano等。如果說Rummel的改編「用盡」現代鋼琴的音色極限，Siloti的改編則是「善用」，不會用太多低音，偏重中高音，Air on G String的改編是最佳示範。 Bach: Piano Transcriptions Vol.5 (arr. You can find his Prokofiev symphony series with the National Symphony Orch. of Ukraine in Naxos. Many people said Karajan's Prokofiev #5 is the classic but I always find German sonority doesn't go together with Russian exuberance. You may find individual reading/recording better than Kuchar, e.g. #7 by Nikolai Anosov issued by Arl and #6 by Mravinsky with the Leningrad, which must be the definitive. I haven't heard the Gergiev set but I have his reading of War and Peace which occur to me much better than Rostropovich whom Prokofiev entrusted to on his deathbed. If you have the chance to go through the Gergiev, please report. |

| [#2059] What are you listening to? Kathleen Ferrier DVD, an ordinary diva. I always like biography and this documentary about the short life of Ferrier is no exception. A tall good looking girl raised in Blackburn. the film described her training, her association with Britten, who let her to sing an important role in his opera, with Barbirolli, who help her to expand her voice range, to sing in Orfeo he conducted, and lastly with Walter, friend and mentor. Together they made the most famous recording of Mahler's Das lied von de erde. While watching this DVD I was touched by her warmth, sincerity and naturalness and I understand why tears fell from Walter's eyes at the end of Das lied. Her life may be short, her voice is eternal. |

| [#2061] What are you listening to? --＞＞ Brahms piano concerto really need a great pianist to bring it off, I wonder how it compare with Gilels/ Jochum. Listened to Brahms Piano Concerto No.2 (played by Barenhoim/Barbirolli ) this morning. Noted the first movement of the piece starts with “do re mi fa mi re mi so (the piano then echo “fa me ra me so”)”, “do’ so fa mi re do re so (the piano then echo “mi re do re so)” …. It is these “do re mi fa mi re mi so” (or just “do re me”) appear on and off throughout the movement build up the beautiful music. At last, the “do re mi” comes again to start the substantive coda. For Barenhoim, I find his quavers that end each phrase in the cadenze like beginning a bit too long. Apart from Barenhoim/Barbirolli, Geza with Karajan under DG is also a good choice.  |

Quoted from the booklet-note, "When Eugen Jochum was asked in an interview a year before his death about the finest recordings of his long and distinguished career, he singled out the Brahms concertos with Giles for special mention. Considering that Jochum was "only accompanying" a soloist, it is hard to imagine a more eloquent tribute to the disc' success." The note also makes reference to the original Gramophone comments by Jerrold Northrop Moore, the world's leading Elgar scholar and an authority on Clara Schumann and the performing traditions associated with her : "What can Giles and Jouchum bring to such a well-populated community of recordings? The answer is a rapt songfulness that in no way detracts from Brahms' heroism, and so comes closer to that unique and complex combination of attitudes that for me is Brahms more than any other performances of these concertos I have ever heard, on records or otherwise". This is a very concise description.  |

| [#2063] What are you listening to? My favourite Brahms/Gilels is actually this one - with Reiner. This is a much more powerful orchestral accompaniment and Gilels reading is correspondingly much more vigorous. Just for the first movement, he took off almost 3 minutes!  |
