| [#2090] What are you listening to? Chankaiming, Kovacevich (1968) 和 Brendel (1988) 相望於二十年間，都是此曲名盤。 Brendel 另有早年的 VoxBox 版，幾好唱口。 舊錄音中，Yudina (1954) 和 Anda (1961) 都值得一聽。 新錄音以 Pollini (1998) 最失望，近於有音無樂；氣絕神散，and that applies to the recorded sound too. |

Listened to Prokofiev Symphony NO. 6 with Walter Weller conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra recorded by the legendary Kenneth Wilkinson in Kingsway Hall, a quarantee for good sound. A symphony in 3 movements this was considered as the greatest and deepest of Prokovief symphonies. It was composed in the post war era, initially meant to be a celebration music, but Prokofiev depicted it as a somber and stern piece, mourning those who suffered and died during the war. Weller and his orchestra was up to the task in reflecting the solemn and dark mood. Support by the great sound it is a piece not to be missed. |

Last night, listened to Prokofiev's symphony No 1&7 conducted by Previn, I start to develop interest in Prokofiev's recently, this disc was on my shelf for a long time already, it is probably time to re-explore. The recording was very good but I cannot comment on performance as this is the only version I have on this symphony. |

Holst除行星組曲外，也沒多少名作，St Paul's Suite算是較有名。這碟可分成兩部分，一是弦樂組曲，二是協奏樂曲。Brook Green Suite與Lyric Movement是Holst逝世前離世，Brook Green Suite簡簡單單，第二樂章有點綠袖子的味道。Lyric Movement的確lyrical：對我來說，如果一首二十世紀的弦樂協奏曲被形容成lyrical，多數是解作獨奏樂器，沒完沒了的拉一個不成旋律的句子。 Fugal Concerto及Double Concerto都是Holst實驗之作，大玩多調性或古怪time signature。行星當然也大玩這些把戲，在上佳旋律及大樂隊的配合，這些另類技法相得益彰，但這奡N沒甚趣味可言。St Paul's Suite旋律動聽，主要援引英國的古舞曲，也由於是寫給中學生，技術要求不高；給小提琴的A Song for the Night亦不是野心之作，反而更有重聽的價值。 音響上，迴音太大，雖然在教堂錄音，但我猜是人工加的迴音。這些迴音或會令你聽得更愉快，但我還是覺得將一隊約三十人的室樂團，錄得像一隊管弦樂團，感覺太怪了。 Holst: Brook Green Suite, A Song for the Night, St Paul's Suite, Lyric Movement, Fugal Concerto, Double Concerto English Sinfonia Howard Griffiths Naxos 8.570339 (CD)  |

| [#2104] What are you listening to? Last night, I listened to Paul Tortelier/ eric Heidsieck played Beethoven Cello sonata. I already owned Rostropvich/Richter's version of Beethoven Cello sonata and never think that I need another version. Comparing Tortelier to Rostropvich is like comparing Grumiaux to Oistrakh, Rostropvich have a thick romantic tone while Tortelier's tone was more elegant and light, both of them can play the music with passion and energy. However Richter was indeed incomparable and it was his contribution that make his set far superior to Tortelier/Heidsieck, Richter can make the piano sing while Heidsieck can only accompany Tortelier dutifully.  |
