[#201] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listen to Sciabin's symphony No.2, may be I am not very familiar to the music, I can only say that it is a mix of Debussy and Shostakovich. I need more time to go into his sound world and understand the music of Sciabin more. ![]()

[#202] What are you listening to? ( classical mus As a encore, I choose Saint-Saens' Piano Trio. Saint-Seans writing a lot of delightful music, and it is one of them, never short of lovely melody, ever sunny and delightful. Although you may complaint that his music lack the depth of Mahler or humanity of Beethoven, but who else does! Surprisingly, the recording by Naxos was very good, violin tone was silky, piano tone was trueful, Cello tone songful and deep. All in all, a delightful chamber recording of music which should attract more attention from classical music lovers. SAINT-SAENS: Piano Trios Nos. 1 and 2 Composer(s): Saint-Saens, Camille Ensemble(s): Joachim Trio Label: Naxos ![]()

[#212] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listen to Mendelssohn's symphony No. 2 `Hymn of Praise'. Although this symphony was massively orchestrated ( chorus, oragn , sorpano and tenor) and heavenly in length (70 minutes), but Mendelssohn charming melody and music writing will never make you bored. If you love Mahler's symphony No.8, Beethoven symphony No. 9, this is the one you should consider next. Abbado version with London symphony and Chorus was famous, although I have not heard of any other version of this symphony. ![]()

[#217] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, I listened to Mahler No. 2 which is his first symphony I encounter seriously and intensively. Today, I listened to it three times (completely) again and got a better understanding. At present, I can only think of its uniqueiness and complication. Having listened to Brahms and Beethoven, etc, for a long time, I can compare their Symphonies side by side sometimes. However, it is hard for me to find Mahler in other composers. I believe i will explore further Mahler..... So which Mahler symphony should I go ahead next??

[#218] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Mahler is challenging for beginner as well as musical critics, beside heavenly length, it is also heavily orchestrated and the emotion behind the notes are enormous. You may consider symphony No.1 `Titan' next as it is more simply to preceive, then try symphony No.4, thereafter no. 9 ( his swan song ), if you love choral, try Symphony No.8, then Symphony no. 6 follow by symphony No.3, leave Symphony No.7 to be the last as it is the most problematic and controversal.

[#219] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Mahler's symphonies are not easy to understand by classical music beginners. Try Zander's series (Telarc SACD) because they are with a free CD that contains explanation of the symphony by the conductor. The sonic quality is also very good although the interpretation may not be the best.
