| [#2228] What are you listening to? Last week listened to Britten's piano concerto played by Richter with Britten conducting the English Chamber Orchestra. A DECCA recording doneby Kenneth Wilkinson in the Malting where excellent is almost guaranteed. The collaboration between Richter and the composer is hard to fault, bring out the witty and exuberation side of this post war composition. If you want to listen to this piece I don't think there is a second choice. |

| [#2236] What are you listening to? There is one word I can think of that best described Walter's Mozart last 6 symphonies--PROFOUND. Sometimes changing of music reproductio gears did affect our perception of music making. Last night listened again to Beethoven 4th Symphony played by Szell directing the Cleveland Symphony Orch. Previously I thought Szell's reading was cold and clinical. But after some minor adjustment of the gear,the coldness is being replaced by elegance and precision that is appropiate for this lively. nimble and sometimes sweet symphony, making it a joy to listen. |

| [#2237] Harnoncourt's Beethoven If I remember correctly, Harnoncourt Bee's box set has sold over one million copy! I like H's Beez for his attention to score details but due to the 50 men bench, (ha, sometime size does matter!) the chamber orchestral lacks power and momentum. To simply put, not enough MOJO. The 50 men band is equivalent to eating a 2.5oz steak. If you are a meat lover, the chamber orchestral of Europe is not for you. But if you appreciate delicacy, or looking for a different presentation to Bee's symphonies, this might be one of the best version you can find on market. BTW, I though the recording was very good. My version is issued by Teldac. |

| [#2239] Harnoncourt's Beethoven jeffr33, There was a old saying that `doing a wrong thing at a right time is better than doing a right ting at a wrong time' Harnoncourt illustrate the point here, in 1990, people are getting tired of having another big band Beethoven symphony cycle after 3 cycles by Karajan, Klemperer, Solti, Bernstein, Toscanini, Furtwangler, Walter. At the same time people also getting tired of the `authentic performance practice' by Gardiner, Bruggen and Norrington, Harnoncourt simply combine the the two and set a new standard. By today standard, his performance lack wonder, just another good Beethoven symphony performance, but his cycle was quite shocking at that time. |

| [#2242] Gardiner's Beethoven Harnoncourt's Beethoven cleansed the overweighted-Wagnerian interpretation. I am not aware of any set before his that skimmed the fat and left bare a harmonic structure of such clarity. Not only that, it was the softness in the sound that brings Mendelsonn to mind. As CKM has rightly pointed out, Harnoncourt shed a new light to the interpretation of Beethoven at the time when nobody else does. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but the choice of the ECO playing on modern instruments was also crucial to the success of this set, as it overcame the instability of period instruments playing which was still common. Putting aside whether one is convinced by this interpretation, personally I very much admire his intellect, determination and courage. Beethoven was never played the same thereafter. It is a historically important set of recording. Then, this approach of Beethoven reached a new milestone with Gardiner. Conducting a full scale period-instrument orchestra, Gardiner brought out the typical lightweighted playing, clarity and details of period instrument interpretation. Nothing usual up till then - but it was the attack, in fact, the repeated, never-ending attacks, and the breathless drive of music that make this set stands out. The playing reminded me of Karajan in the 1960s when I first listened to it. Gardiner showed that the period movement can also produce the same excitment in music. With Gardiner, the mordern approach of Beethoven was firmly established.  |

| [#2246] Mendelssohn's Ortario Yesterday, I take my time to listen to Mendelssohn's Ortariio `Elijah'. Although I don't have amy religious belief, I still found this work very moving, the music really sound like the heaven is opened. Mendelssohn was a good composer in writing melody, and this ortario was very enjoyable indeed, I was impressed by the music immediate after I listen to it first time ever and I don't really undersatnd the libretto, I am sure Christian or Catholic will enlighten me on the true meaning of this work. The recording was very good, certained it was recorded in a great hall or Cathedral, although I don't have different versions to compare with, I was satisfied.
