[#2270] What are you listening to? J.S. Bach Cello Suite-Maurice Gendron. I listened to the LP version last night, a warm. intimate, introspective reading. It gave me peace of mind after the emotional upset caused by reading M.Lee's article in the WSJ. I always think that Bach's music is the best medicine for mood disturbance.

[#2271] What are you listening to? Also listened to Richard Strauss Ein Heldelaben by Karajan and BPO. Karajan had recorded it 3 times and it is the earliest version the TULIP DGG I owned. Another fine reading of this score, beside that by Reiner. You may argue about Karajan's other works, but when it come to Strauss there is no dispute, he is aStrauss specialist. He gave a totally satifying account of this music autobiography of Strauss and the playing by the concertmaster Michel Sawalbe was beyond reproach.

[#2278] Definitive version-Bach's violin sonata podger uses period instrument and this is a very popular disc. If you want to compare period instrument performance you could compare with Kuijken's performance.

| [#2281] Schubert string Quintet on period instrument Personally, I am not too familiar with historial informed performance of chamber music, and historical informed performance of romantic chamber music was even strange to me. Last night I listened to Schubert's string Quintet played on period instrument, their tone have no vibrato at all, which make this piece of wonderful music sound less appealing than it should be. This was my favorite chamber pieces and I can always enjoy it up till the end if performed by the legendary Hollywood Quartet, but I fall asleep quickly last night. Although fatigue after work might be the main reason, I think the performance was at least part of the reason. | [#2282] Schubert string Quintet on period instrument CKM and eric: For schubert's trout quintet, apart from the "must" recordings played by Curzon x Vienna Quartet (Decca) and Richter x Borodin Quartet (EMI), I was particularly overwhelmed of hearing the refined and aristocratic performance played by Jorge Demus x Collegium Aureum in a LP issued by RCA living stereo, imbued with a special flavor of viennese charm and balanced soundstage, all strings are in its right place and piano is never submerged by other string instruments, an account with viennese charm (attributed to Jorge Demus who is viennese citizen), intimacy and indispensably vitality. Hope that Sony/BMG can reissue this LP and CD, another underrated recording which all schubert fans should not miss! But I have'nt seen it after that audition! P.S.: bought some reissue SONY reissue LP recently, particularly glenn gould's 55 goldberg variations and Miles Davis's "kind of blue". ![]() |

[#2283] Schubert string Quintet on period instrument george1977 Have you visited this shop in Taiwan? I'd really like to go when I have a chance to visit Taipei: http://www.stsd.idv.tw/ My friend told me that Mr Lin will be very patient to introduce the music labels that he carries. Of course not to mention his cherry picked French amps (Kora), speaker (Pierre-Etienne LEON) and French cable (Esprit) as well as his previous favourites J C Verdier 2A3 and JMR Offrande. Ocassionally, he will hold some listening sessions and seminars on various classical music topics. Well I am only a layman in classical music just randomly picking some classical music to listen. So far I like violin music and start to favour piano music. Will seriously consider to attend the London Symphony Orchestra performance in HK! ![]()

[#2286] Schubert string Quintet on period instrument Myers Sorry that I haven't visited this CD shop before, seems very good wow! I should visit taiwan again during December 07 or Jan 08 :D Indeed you can ask Minpin who just travelled taiwan for Kremer's concert, he can share with us more about his fascinating live concert experience, I was blown away at the time listening his experience sharing! Thank about his recent review about Brahms Violin Sonatas (I only collect Perlman/Barenboim, Suk/Katchen sets), hope Minpin can contribute more!! :) Thanks for your info! George1977
