| [#2289] Concert Report Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica, National Concert Hall, Taipei, 27/10/07 What makes Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica so special is their rare ability to communicate music with the audience. Whether you belong to the young or the old, you play an instrument or are simply a music lover, or even totally new to music, it doesn’t matter because they still have the power to engage and embrace you into their performance. You know it when everybody, audience and musicians alike, were laughing, clapping, jumping, shouting ... at the end of the concert. I was fortunate enough to be there when the Kremers were visiting Taipei last weekend to enjoy the moment. The Kremerata Baltica started off with Bartok Divertimento, without a conductor. It was pure chamber music making, with constant exchanges of eye-contact amongst the leaders. After all, they have been playing together for 10 years, and a simple glance speaks volume. It was followed by a modern work by Victor Kissine (the same composer who orchestrated a Schubert Quartet now recorded on ECM). It is a profound and atmospheric piece that brings out a lot of Kremer's trademark playing. The violin does not sound like a violin anymore. It has become a voice of layers of colours, and it mumbles, screams, whistles, and above all, sings the most beautiful silence. The work develops out of an initial cord which kept echoing throughout, each time brings a different mood. The stage turned into a playground after the intermission, with a series of music taken from movies, and one by one, the party unfolded. The Kremers were (literally) acting, singing, smiling and running around on stage, while going through the music of Philip Glass, Piazzolla, Kancheli, Takemisu, amongst others. The musicians were tired - this was their fourth concert in four consecutive days, arriving from China that morning - but they were giving us a real treat. When so much fun is going on, I’d just sit back and enjoy. Why bother with the rest. |

| [#2299] Definitive version-Bach's violin sonata cpsjj U mean Suwanai Akiko will have a concert in HK in 18/4-19/4/07? I didn't see any poster in Cty Hall or Tom Lee. So far in my life I have only watched Midori's first visit to HK with Lorin Maazel when she was a kid and I was studying F4. |
