Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Many independent labels have issued Wilhelm Furtwängler's valedictory Ninth, but none sound as good as this. Tahra's mastering from the original source (as opposed to the multigeneration tapes used elsewhere) uncovers a previously unsuspected dynamic and color range, and reveals subtler inflections from phrase to phrase. The disc also includes a short snippet of the conductor talking about the Ninth (in German, translations are included). --Jed Distler

[#2355] Furtwangler's Ninth Symphony X 3
Talking about Furtwangler's beethoven Symphony No.9, the reason why five brothers here vote for 1954 version is , I wonder, not only because of a well-recorded sound with minimum tape hiss and "pops" among furtwangler's heritage, many music critics in Europe aver (although not unanimously) that 1954 recording is an indispensable display of his utter flexibility and transcendental inspiration . I hereby quote a comment from Gramophone magazine 1995 Gramophone Award special issue (Oct 1995) about this account:

"Some of Furtwangler's finest performances of Beethoven's music were given in the last month of his life , an odd paradox given his failing health and, by November, the apparent extinction of his will to live. Yet this Lucerne Ninth is a seismic utterance, the final heroic regrouping of musical and psychic powers that in certain works of the repertory have this gangling figure towering over all his rivals. This is arguably the greatest of all Furtwangler's recordings of the symphony. Walter Legge wanted to acquire the performance as EMI's official replacement for the momentous 1951 Bayreuth account, but it wasn't to be. Since then there have been various "unofficial" editions. The Tahra differs in being "official", well transferred, and further enhanced by a few introductory remarks from Furtangler himself.

Here, the most significant section is that in which furtwangler sees the problem of interpreting the Ninth as one that effectively post-dates the performing culture into which it was born. Furtwangler understood the Ninth as well as any conductor in the twentieth century. You can argue this way or that over the pacing of the slow movement (though we defy anyone to say that his performance is anything other than deeply eloquent) or the leisurely speed of the second movement Trio. In the all-important first movement, though, there is no doubt that Beethoven's written tempo markings and frequent subsequent modifications clearly presupposes the kind of uniquely singing, flexible, harmonically searching (but by no means over-slow) reading Furtwangler invariably gave us.

I fully agreed of what it said about this account with justification, its operatic finale outperform 1951 account in pace, nuance and phrasing, rubato is appropriate without excessive indulgence. Also the widow of Furtwangler once recalled that Furtwangler felt utterly terrible and sleepless indeed on that night after the concert of Bayreuth Festival in 1951!!

With my due respect, the last paragraph is just my humble opinion. Every brother can have their own favourite cup of tea indeed.

[#2359] Carmen
Last night, Carmen by Carlos Kleiber.

Although the sound, picture and acting from 1970's are not up to todays highest standard, the performance were the best I have ever heard of.

Carlos Kleiber stole the limelight this time, his conducting was energetic and push with forward momentum, Domingo was young at that time. Although Obraztsova was by no mean a beautiful and attractive Carmen, she have a full and powerful voice. I really hope that we can have a opera film casting a really beautiful actress as Carmen.

記憶中好像未聽過他 Lovro von Matari , 但一(看)聽下感覺出奇地好. 雖然日本樂團不屬頂班馬, 但可看到此君簡單得有點單調的指揮動作下有股很龐大的音樂感染力.
