| [#2369] Rubinstein's Chopin Last night, listened to Rubinstein's playing of Chopin's Waltz. Rubinstein playing was relax, elegant, which was in contrast with Lipatti's exciting, dancing playing on EMI. Recording was satisfactory only. | [#2370] Mahler's Sixth Anyone will go to this concert? I will go on Friday 16/11/2007 From HKPO: http://www.hkpo.com/eng/concerts_and_ticket/concerts/concertdetail.jsp?id=47 De Waart’s Mahler Cycle – The Tragic Sixth 16 & 17-11-2007 Fri & Sat 8PM Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall Since his inaugural Hong Kong concert in October 2004, Edo de Waart has put the symphonies of Gustav Mahler at the heart of the Hong Kong Philharmonic’s programming with powerful performances signposting the Orchestra’s artistic growth. The massive Sixth Symphony is dark and turbulent, its hero a tragic victim of cruel fate. By contrast, Richard Strauss’s Four Last Songs are radiantly serene and Finnish soprano Soile Isokoski is widely regarded as among their finest interpreters. |

[#2374] Harnoncourt's Beethoven concerto Last night, listened to Harnoncourt and Aimard collaboration in Beethoven piano concerto No.4&5, Harnoncourt's approach was fresh and poetic, while Aimard piano palying always reminded me of Kempff. String tone was transparent and wit, totally different from my usually preception of this concerto. http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000088DSQ/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt/104-0444387-1702336?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 ![]()

[#2375] Callas Complete Studio Recrodings Hello friends: As a "latecomer" to Callas, after some thought I finally decided to get this set. Regrettably I cannot really recommend this to anyone. The case is rather flimsy and inconvenient. The paper sleeve has gaudy artwork and does not list individual tracks. The booklet only contains track listings. The CD-rom contains the libretti in tiny fonts, with a miserly picture gallery. Overall the production is ultra cheap and not deserving of collection. Made in E.U., the CDs sound fine. Of course the perfromances are great. ![]()

[#2378] Previn 邊個邊個: Previn already 78!! (born in 1930), dunno why Previn and Mutter got married (age of 3x apart, like master Lau and Miss Yung in Hong Kong) While previn working with LSO in EMI at 70's (4x something) was most brillant and furitful period of his carrer.

[#2379] Andrm Previn born in 1930 > Andrm Previn was born Andreas Ludwig Priwin in Berlin on 6 April 1929 of Russian-Jewish descent. I like his Mozart G major Concerto with the VPO (1984) too. My version is from Philips's "Great Pianists" Vol.80. I also enjoy enormously his recording of Mozart's Twelve Variations in C major on the French song "Ah, vous dirai-je, Maman". It was recorded on Boxing Day in 1962 in Hollywooe, at a time when he had won several Academy Awards for film scores. He was to abandon Hollywood and embark on a conducting career the following year. ![]()

[#2381] Andrm Previn I was quite surprised at Philips decision to choose Andre Previn as one of the great pianist of the 20th century insteads of really great pianist like Hamelin, Annie Fischer. However, Previn's piano playing in Rachmaninov was at least as good as Ashkenasy. In a Rachmaninov piano music disc for two piano played by Ashkenasy and Previn, I cannot clearly distingish the difference between the two pianist. ![]()

[#2383] Andrm Previn I like Previn too on the piano. His light touch and fluidity is superior to many famous pianists out there. No doubt his jazz ability compliments rather than subtracts from his classical playing. His early CBS recordings as pianists are also excellent. He is probably a better all-around pianist that conductor (though his LSO works are good in general).

[#2384] Oistrakh's palying of Catoire Catoire was a key figure in Russian music circle, thanks to the innovative programe provided by Brilliant classics, I was able to heard Catoire's music played by one of the greatest violinist of our time, the music sound like Tchaikovsky with some dissonance. The recording was in mono and closely recorded, putting Oistrakh's violin oin the centre of the stage, sonical good for its age. ![]()

[#2387] Mahler's Sixth CKM, I'll go on 17th Sat. To prepare myself for the concert, listened to Karajan/BPO version yesterday, great and refined playing from Karajan, but I like Horenstein version better. Look foreward to the DEC party, esp. you are a Shatin 'yau' now.
