[#221] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Wish you all have a very happy X'mas holidays. Today I took a taxi and drove all the way to Mr Wu's workshop and back in 40 minutes just to take a few Mallory caps to further enhance the WE44A, Mr Wu was so kind to take it down to the garage so that I can take the same taxi back to HK side thus saving the tunnel return fee, and still the total taxi fare was $262. My boss said I am crazy, but what's wrong about it as long as I still have heart for it.

[#224] WE in Shanghai 1derful WE 106, Marantz 3, JBL,Altec... system in Shanghai. It's amazing that the owner mostly listen to violin music and it's a real challenge for him to work on such a complicated JBL,Altec multiway speaker system to get the 'real' violin sound. The big monster on the top of the rack is his diy WE106 preamp with a truck load of genuine WE parts inside and it's using a pair of WE300B only as the PS regulator! Unfortunately I forgot to crawl behind the system to take a photo of all those junk-looking WE caps, cables, amplifiers, transformers...etc which the owner spent years in hunting. ![]()

[#225] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 vt75, It all depends on what spk system you are using, JBL, WE755A and the like needs only 16ga multi-strand to sound its best, LS3/5A needs larger gauge, there is no hard and fast rule, you have to try.

[#226] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Yesterday was a rainy day in Los Angeles, my newly built 86b amps have been put in service for over 12 hours. Honestly I was pretty disappointed the first hour after I connected them to my system. I talked to myself what a disaster; No high, not low, bloody dry, forget the sweetness I expect from 300B and the entire system sound unbelievable awful, I though all the hard work go down to the tube. And this sound performance really drove me walked out the room and regretted the effort I put together for this project. Two, three, four, six hours pass I saw improvement but not significant so I just turned them off and forgot it, until yesterday I had my system turned on for another 6 hours, I was stunned by the sound enhancement every hour I walked back to the room. All high, mid, low, warmness, texture, sweetness, details, instrument separations …… are all back. This is absolutely unbelievable to see the transition of the process. Tubes on my 86bs are WE262A, WE262B, 2X 300B (China made unknown brand) and WE274B. I have been a 131A (with WE349A) user for 6 months and I'm certain I know the sound characteristic of 131A with 349A. The truth is 86B win 131A in any aspect you can imagine except the HF in this configuration. It is not difficult to understand because due to the China made 300B. I will put back the genuine WE300B after the entire run in process is complete. Western Electric 300B is absolutely irreplaceable. There is no magic only Western Electric tubes can give you that elegant Western Electric’s color characteristic. Finally my pre-amp is 44A and my speaker system is TAD 4001 +1601. Another good news was LA Lakers defeat Boston Celtics 92-83.

[#231] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 ptsang hing, I know nothing about the real WE106 sound but the three clones I auditioned are all great with excellent texture and resolution. The one by Master Wu is singing now with a Supravox fullrange system in the violin cd specialist shop in the Central. Another clone by the Chinese company Sun Si is used by the pentode gang trying out all their treasures (see below photo). That particular WE106 in Shanghai impressed me a lot with its awesome bass. The owner told me he tunes the sound of his system mainly via the preamp. During the audition, I could feel the bass pulsating all the way up from the floor to my body while playing some mass scale symphonic music (like what you experience during a real concert) and it came fast like lightning unlike those 'faked' bass from modern solid state amp systems. Unfortunately I did not take a photo of the preamp showing the bank of precious WE capacitors used in the PS. The owner hates electrolytic caps and he tried his best in replacing all the e caps in his system with vintage WE oil caps he collected in the past. ![]()

[#234] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 It does not look like the original circuit, the one modified by Mr Wu is good using 262A+349A. According to Mr Wu, he got the idea after hearing the Shindo Giscour in which WE349A is used to drive an output trans for each channel. Can't figure what tubes are used from the picture in this Shanghai clone 106A.

[#235] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Master Wu's piece of treasure singing beautifully with Supravox alnico and Master Yeung's field coil lowther clone. I remember one day I walk into the shop and realized that the sound was much improved so I asked the boss what tricks did he apply to the system. The answer is, the stock US pentode had been changed to genuine WE349 by the owner. My tin ears weren't so bad afterall capturing the improvements. ![]()

[#238] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 1derful and Peter hing, Mr. WU has three WE106 versions. 106A, B & C. One of them is using the original WE336a. and the power transformers are not the same. But to my wood ears, the best sound should be 106c when it is using 349A + 262B. 349A is a wonderful tube, it sings better and better. You cannot reisit turning it off after one or two hours singing. 老吳兄 should be the expert of this tube.

[#239] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 I know Mr Wu for more than 10 years, I used to call him Ah Wu, and I have asked him to make WE pre and amps for me since 1996, though many original WE stuff have been used, I have never once satisfied by the amps made by him. Not until about 2 years ago, I first heard his clone/modified WE106A using 262A+349A preamp, the sound is open, balanced and coherent throughout from top to bottom, the sound image has a solid density that can only be found in very expensive preamps created by contemporary commercial giants. By then, I knew Ah Wu has tranformed himself from an electrical technician to a creator of music. His later creations, the WE41+42 power amp and 44A preamp proved to be a smashing success. I think he deserves the title, Master Wu.
