| [#2384] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Confirmed leakage of C3 and C5 0.1uf caps. Please advise any other choices available and how to test for leakage before installation. Here are the new readings, values in green. For those of the 0.25uf TCC, the values are now normal at 194V/190V and 192V/192V. ![]() |

| [#2386] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Patrick, Now what 0.1uF caps you have put in your ST-20? I have the same sort of TCC 0.1uF caps and I all along have reservation on the TCC rubber-end caps. I am using WestCap/Sprague 0.1uF/400V PIO caps. Though it is not TCC, sounding is not bad at all. r |

I will try to buy Sprague 0.1uf then, can I buy them from Max. I bought some 50uf Sprague (not yet installed becos I am afraid them of being leaking) from big Chu, is there a high possibility that they will be leaking? |

| [#2393] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Patrick, In short, you can use a cap tester to test leakage. Tim, Lym and Stone have the Heathkit IT-28 which can test leakage of caps at up to over 500V(?). But in theory, you can test leakage without such a tester. If you have a Vari-DC that has a switch to charge/discharge the cap and you have a voltmeter to test the voltage changes at the other lead of the cap. Well, it sounds too complicated and could be dangerous to a novice DIY-er. I don't have a ready photo of the WestCap 0.1uF/400V. But I guess you can find some at Small or Big CHU. If you want, I can sell (cut-love) 4 to you. You need to pay me only when you find them non-leaky. r |

| [#2394] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Gentlemen, enlighten me. In the choice of cap/resistor replacement on vintage amps, I also opt for things that are available off the self for two simple reasons: A) save time in looking and B) reliability and durability of modern construction. It is the principle behind good engineering, and to me it just makes sense. When I decided to change caps in my Stereo ST60, I think no twice on the issue, and I got myself 4 pieces Jensen copper foil (o.22uF) and two pieces 0.1uF to replace the leaky caps in the unit. To me, reliability is definitely far more important than an exact match in sound characteristic, as the latter I will never know since I will never have a chance to hear any true original equipment (to that I mean something that left the factory in the 50's and 60's) to compare with. I guess all of us would have faced the same dilemma before, and of course each of us would have a slightly different viewpoint also. As we can not get the exact value (0.25uF) caps from Jensen or other makes. The question I always have in my mind is that given the value of the cap is different from the spec. (0.22 vs. .25uF in the spec.) what difference that would have in the performance, and technically what does that mean? Chi |

| [#2395] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users As we can not get the exact value (0.25uF) caps from Jensen or other makes. -------------------------------------- http://www.angela.com/catalog/capacitors/Angela_PIO.html Angela has 0.25 uF PIO capacitors, made by Jensen. Made In China, Sequa axial tubular capacitors feature aluminum foil plates, 50mm tinned oxygen free copper leads, and plastic sheathing over an aluminum case. The overall construction and rich sonic character is very similar to the other aluminum foil paper in oil capacitors we offer. Tolerance 10% (typically better...). Operating range -40 degrees centigrade to +125 degrees centigrade. Every NEW Sequa capacitor we sell is tested at THREE TIMES the rated voltage for ten seconds. .01uF/600VDC, 28 x 12mm. SALE! | [#2396] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users John, yes, I think you have a high chance to write them off unfortunately. ------------------------------------------- Sorry to know they are leaky. I have another Six. David uses the same batch of 0.1uF capacitors in his Stereo 20 and they work good. Juse confuse I should use them in my Leak amplifiers. John Keung |
