[#2436] La Traviata Erictang, For Norma, Callas has, up till now, no rival. The version you posted should be MONO and one of the best. I have another MONO version with Christa Ludwig (as Adalgisa) and Corelli (as Pollione), which I considered to be still a bit better. Other fine Norma should include Sutherland and Scotto (much underrated). Caballe is also highly praised by critics but I haven't heard of hers. Bonynge's Rigoletto has already been one of the classic. The famous quartet is in Act three, "Bella figlia dell'amore" (track 11 of disc 2). In this version, Ms. Sutherland has that high note at 3:49. I haven't got or even known that Chailly's Rigoletto [I only know the one with Ms. Anderson as Gilda(Decca)]. Ms. Gruberova do not sing that high note in another Rigoletto under the baton of Sinopoli (Philips). I haven't got Callas's il barbiere di siviglia and so have no comment. Happy listening... :)

[#2439] La Traviata JT, I think there is a Stereo version Norma by Callas (EMI recorded in 1962 I guess) that is also highly praised. Do you know which is the one? In chailly's Rigoletto, "Bella figlia dell'amore" is also in track 11 of disc 2. I will audit later. I think I read your recommendation before on Verdi - Rigoletto / Sutherland, Pavarotti, Milnes, LSO, Bonynge , and that's why I get that records. About il barbiere di siviglia, I get the DGG Abbado, sonically it is very good but get the following comment here previously. 'weaknesses in terms of humor, especially from Prey's singing' Just found your previous recommendation with item 1 highly praised. 1.Bruscantini/ de los Angeles/ Alva/ conducted by Gui (EMI) 2.Allen/ Baltsa/ Araiza/ conducted by Marriner (Philips) 3.Seville/ Ganassi/ Vargas/ conducted by Humburg (Naxos) FYI, I start buying used LP from eBay recently, mostly opera. For carmen under decca / solti, do you know if there is only one recording? About carmen, I prefer the RCA Karajan/Price as a whole and EMI Callas (because of her Carmen). But Gramphone magazine highly recommend the Mazzel from Erato (and Naxos for il barbiere di siviglia). About Mozart, seems those under Karl Bohm barton are in general very good.

[#2440] Any classical fans here? erictang, a stereo highly-praised Norma by Callas? I do want to know ... :) Maazel's Carmen is superb. The film is quite worthy to have a look. There are tons of good opera recordings but I can only afford to listen to a very tiny portion of them. Critics and reviews are good guide but you need not strictly follow. Right? HiFi oldman, Glad to know that you are interested in classical music. There are many highhands and walking dictionaries in R33, do chat with them. Moreover, read more, listen more and accumulate your knowledge. Plenty of good books and CDs await your visit in public library and are free of charge.

[#2445] Any classical fans here? Yes, there is a highly praised stereo recording of Norma by Callas/Serafin/EMI produced in 1961. I bought this set by French EMI(2C 165-99535/7) in 1984 from Hong Kong Records in Admiralty. Casta Diva by Callas in 1961 is still almost comparable to that recorded in 1954. Norma-Casta Diva, Aida-O patria mia, Macbeth-La luce langue and Tosca-Vissi d'arte by Callas are my all time favourites. Simply no competitive sopranos in these areas.
