[#2430] Saturday 24 yumcha Last night, start to listened to Mozart's `Cosi fan tutti', with the aid of the small booklet that come with the CD, I found the story quite interesting and there are numerous lovely melody. I only finish scene 1 and 2 but my family already found my opera listening session too noisy, but the music are really wonderful with different combination of vocal Duet, trio , Quartet and Quintet, Mozart was really a genius in bring out different emotion of different person. Morever the cast on EMI was hard to beat, a great opera wonderful sing by legendary singers, beyond doubt a great recording of the century. ![]()

[#2432] Saturday 24 yumcha I agree. In a lucky draw I won its companion volume, Renee Jacob's recording of "Nozze di Figaro". It's indeed exemplary, and does not yield anything to Karl Bohm's classic DG set. I can;t say it better than the Amazon reviewer: "...René Jacobs has done it again. Following on the heels of his superb Cosi fan tutte, he now offers a Nozze di Figaro which is alive and vibrant; it seems to be happening in real time. There's so little artifice in the characters' recitatives and the rhythm is so conversational that we get the impression of real people, in a real pickle of a situation. The singing/acting is stunning, with Simon Keenlyside's Count the best on CD (a dangerous man just in control of his anger), Veronique Gens' Countess girlish and womanly in equal measure, the Cherubino of Angelika Kirchschlager extraordinarily well sung and properly boyish, Patrizia Ciofi's Susanna witty and wise and Lorenzo Regazzo's Figaro slightly darker than others, but all the more interesting for it. Throughout, the pianoforte not only accompanies but acts as commentator on the action. I don't find it intrusive but some might. Jacobs' instrumentalists play with real energy and brightness. This is a performance which feels as if it's being seen as well as heard. Just grand. --Robert Levine" ![]()

[#2433] Saturday 24 yumcha Doctor john, After hearing Rene Jacobs' recent recording of `Marriage of Figaro' I have put it on my wish list already. One more question, is Callas complete set worthy for a beginner who want to collect all major opera in one go? Chowhwk, Welcome back to our forum, I know little about opera and it was the first time I listened to Mozart's `Cosi fan tutte', probably I still have a long way to go. Can you recommend some good opera recording by Verdi, Puccini or other composer?

[#2437] Callas 's complete set chankaiming: You may have missed what I said earlier here! :...As a "latecomer" to Callas, after some thought I finally decided to get this set. Regrettably I cannot really recommend this to anyone. The case is rather flimsy and inconvenient. The paper sleeve has gaudy artwork and does not list individual tracks. The booklet only contains track listings. The CD-rom contains the libretti in tiny fonts, with a miserly picture gallery. Overall the production is ultra cheap and not deserving of collection. Made in E.U., the CDs sound fine. Of course the perfromances are great..." I;d get the individual boxes if I were you.

[#2438] HKPO/EdW/Mahler 6 16/11/07 HKPO/Isokoski/EdW Strauss/Mahler CCCH I went on Friday. As usual with Mahler, I was able to get the cheapest tickets close to the last minute. Attendance would have been pitiful without augmentation from freebies to students and who knows whom. I had high hopes for Soile Isokoski in Strauss’ “Four Last Songs”, and I was not disappointed. She was not the most powerful, but she sang elegantly and tastefully. The accompaniment was delicate and textured, the best I’ve heard from EdW. An eminently satisfying first half. Alas, in the second half, EdW reverted to his profoundly boring self, for who could have expected M6 to be so bland? The symphony went on, with little sense of struggle, not to say tragedy. Sometimes there were interesting details, like in the deliberately studied rendition of the Scherzo but, as always with EdW, just when things got a little interesting, the whole thing just sagged. This was not the most incoherent thing EdW had given us, but it sure lacked purpose. The first movement’s climatic moments were quite ragged, marred further by unpleasantly frantic tympani playing by Boznos, unacceptably vulgar tone from oboist Mark Wilson, and ragged playing from new members of the percussion section. Most of us did not like the sound of the new seating plan, now seemingly favored by EdW for big pieces. Divided violins, celli in the center and double basses behind the first violins. The rear players were moved out, clear of the overhanging balcony. The resultant sound was undoubtedly louder, but unfortunately also coarser. 2012? I was not one to clap. Bad news, I thought.

[#2443] Dutoit Leaning a new opera ( for me ) now is a rewarding experience, but tiring sometimes. Last night, I continue my listening session on Mozart's `Cosi fan tutti', fortunately I can finish act one before I receive compliant from my baby. According to some information on the net, this opera was long neglected, was it due to the fact that it lack lovely and famous arias for Soprano or tenor? The music are wonderful, vocal duet, trio, quartet, quintet and sextet come one after another, a fest of vocal music. 樂樂集 難道女人都是這樣嗎? http://www.musicdata.org/md_new/pages/posts/85.-C3F8B9dA4kA4hB3A3ACoB3oBCCBB6DCA1h317.php?p=60 ![]()
