| [#2467] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users There are LEAK TL/12 Plus (EL84) and TL/12 Point One (KT66). I guess you meant TL/12.1 don't you? There are a few shops in HK have the TL/12.1 amps for sale, at around $30,000 to $35,000 a pair depending on condition and what tubes will go with the amps. TCC caps can be found readily in eBay at starting bid of GBP29.99 for 4 recently. In addition, a guy (moniker: *DIY*) in R33 regularly has the caps for sale at around $250 each. You can contact him through the R33 system. I am going to copy your question to the "Leak Club" thread in R33 to let more members to respond to your questions. You may wish to go back to the thread to read if any brothers have more comments for you. | [#2478] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Pang - My reported dated 22 Mar 2004 is appended below. r ^__^ ------------------------------------------ I am writing to share my joy after modification done to my pair of FISHER 80C monophonic preamps. Yes, I did modify them - a very rare action that I took on legendary amps (My concept is to keep them as stock as possible). The monophonic 80C must be designed in a conflict between the design engineer and the production engineer. Seldom I saw a vintage preamp used a 1uF coupling capacitor except in the 80C - the circuit designer had it to use such an expensive component (at that time) but it must be the production engineer who faced the budget and used electrolytic capacitors for the output stage coupling, the most crucial signal path! Electrolytic capacitors are cheap, small in size and high in value but are usually unstable and frequency response range is very narrow. As I felt the sound from my 80C was much worse than my EICO HF-85, I started to look at the components used. A the hiden location (see photos uploaded), I found a 1uF/250V dry electrolytic capacitor one at the output coupling stage of each 80C. One has even drifted to 1.8 uF and the other 1.5uF (very usual for electrolytic caps). How could I tolerate them? I replaced them with NOS TCC PIO capacitors (2x 0.5uF in parallel). Improvement is immediately evident. Vocals have finer details, sound stage stable, airy and clean! If it is the day, I would test the dynamics as well (dark here in HK!). I started to feel the nice tonality from my 80C, that the Marantz ONE which I heard a few days ago could give. The 80C could be a very nice preamp but only with the modification I think. With more run-in time for the NOS TCC PIO caps, I believe the sound would be even more pleasing. Do members have other views on my 80C modification? | [#2480] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Some follow-up posts: ---------------------------------------------- Alan, I might have found the reason for the poor sounding of Fisher 80C - read my earlier post on the modification of my pair of 80c! I have studied the schematics of 80C, which is simple and practical. The simpler is often the better and therefore I don't believe 80C should sound that poor. If you have 80C, consider the modification that I have done! :) Regards, Richard > The Characteristic of 80-C: > > Sorry to tell you that Fisher 80-C does not have rich harmonic as > Fisher 50-C, it does not have hard and solid bass as Fisher 400-C and > it also does not have great details as Fisher 400-CX-2. | [#2481] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Hi Richard It's William (vinylforever). I joined this group a few months ago but have not posted anything before. As you know, I have a Fisher 400-CX-2. It's in all original condition and basically plug and play, although the filter cap next to the power tranny gets unusually hot after a few hours of play. (I think you knew that already.) It sounds great and I love it. Then more recently, I have bought a pair of 80-C in like-new condition, with all original parts. It's again, luckily, plug and play. (This is important for me since I don't know a thing about repairing these "beauties".) I wasn't having very high hopes since I have heard that the 80-C wasn't as good as the 50C or the 400-CX-2. But I was nicely surprised. It sounded quite a bit better than the 400-CX-2! I needed to play with the treble and loudness adjustments (as suggested by the Fisher 80-C manual, and I think Alan also advocates that) to get the best sound. I would say the 80-C is not exactly the last word on clarity or control, but the sound is so much warmer, more emotional and, well, more like real music than the 400-CX-2. Perhaps part of the reason why it works well in my system is that my WE142 power amps have good clarity and control, so the weakness of the 80-C is perhaps partly covered up by the synergy. I am very interested in your findings, and please do keep us posted after you have done more extensive listening. I am excited about the prospect of how good it could sound, although I must admit I have two minds about changing the original parts.
