[#2482] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Dear Richard and William I'm glad to hear that Richard has modified his Fisher 80-C to be more closely to his own taste (Personally, I do not suggest user to modify the vintage gears, but some people like tea and some people like coffee…! This is a very personally option and I will not disagree with Richard's decision!) By the way, I also glad to know that William figure out how to handle his Fisher 80-C (I believe he already move to a more advance level now…!). Personally, I like the Fisher 80-C slightly more than the Fisher 400-CX or 400-CX-2. The reason is very simple because the Fisher 80-C has better ability of emotional expression on music, but also with more natural, realistic and warmer tone than Fisher 400-CX. No question that the Fisher 80-C has weaker details and extension of high, but it just sounds much more musical and emotional than Fisher 400-CX-2, but also much more cheaper...! (The quality of music not always equality to the money your paid, especially in the vintage hi-fi!) The only problem of Fisher 80-C is never get the tone balance right if you set it at the flat position (tone control) like Fisher 400-CX-2 or Fisher 50-C…! It also required better setting skill on volume, input level and tone balance as a dual mono preamp as stereo reproduction. Personally, I'm more concerning about the emotional expression on music rather than the tone quality (extension and details). Since I believe the fundamental of music is ability of express the emotion behind the music, but not the sound quality of tone or details. If the gear has a strong characteristic of sound and good ability of emotional expression, than it must be a very good gear. Hence, the Fisher 80-C can reproduce the best sound image of violin wooden box, but also the darkest colour string and most sadness emotion in Fisher preamp family. It has the dark, deep and sadness emotional characteristic, totally different if compared to the Fisher 400-CX-2 and Fisher 50-C. The problem is you must have very advance setting skill to achieve the exactly tone quality you got. No question that it does not has outstanding harmonic extension as Fisher 50-C and excellent details as Fisher 400-CX-2, but you can hear that you are much more closer to the music performer in your listening position when you plug it on! Have Fun! Best regards Alan

[#2483] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Pang- That is it for copying to the R33. ^__^ ---------------------------------------------- Dear Alan, I said in the EICO eGroup that my query on the FISHER 80C was: the circuit design engineer used a high value output stage capacitor (1uF paper cap was costly in the 1950s) because it had a cathode follower output stage that requires high capacitance. The FISHER design engineer had it and make an accurate calcalation. But then the FISHER production engineer came up with 1 uF electrolytic capacitor to control costs(?) (though of very high quality. See one of the photos uploaded to "80C" folder in the "Photos" section). Have you come across a hi-fi audio amp using electrolytic capacitors (along the signal path, particularly at the output stage? Never did I, except in the FISHER 80C. (Note: All the other coupling and capacitors are very nice vintage - "GOOD ALL" wax-sealed paper capacitors. So, in my view 80C has a high potential for upgrading only the 1 uF cap.) If we use a scope to measure the performance of an electrolytic cap (small in size, high in value) as coupling vis-a-vis a paper capacitor (same value will be big in size), we would find a lot of distortions due to electrolytic cap's slow transience, acute roll- off at high freqencies, etc. Why did FISHER use such a non-hi-fi component in its hi fi gears? Puzzling! At my school time many years, I built a solid state OTL amp using 2N3055 power transistors and a 1,000 uF electrolytic capacitor in the coupling to a speaker. The sound was awful (not awesome). That amp cannot be counted as 'hi fi'. I was really surprised to find that the 80C uses electrolytic capacitor in the signal path. It is against the basics of any hi fi audio-amp in my view, and therefore, my drammatized office politics in the FISHER plant. Perhaps I am biased with electrolytic caps. The fact could be that the FISHER purposively drew upon the special sonic characteristics of electrolytic caps. Any electronic experts can advise on the characteristics of electrolytic caps, please? :) Regards, Richard --- In fishergroup@yahoogroups.com, fisheramp wrote: > Dear Richard and William > > I'm glad to hear that Richard has modified his Fisher 80-C to be more

[#2484] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users Pang, After you read the various posts on the tweak and if you still consider using TCC caps in your 80C, let me know. Don't worry about sourcing the TCC caps for the purpose. I have some for you. ^__^ r

[#2485] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users The original 1uF coupling cap (brown), which is ELECTROLYTIC - too bad for the final-stage signal path of the preamp (in my view)! r ![]()

[#2486] Leak Club for Leakies or Leak users The tweaking requires removal of the 1uF (brown) cap) and moving the "Good All" cap inward to make larger space for the TCC caps to be soldered on. r ![]()
