[#2528] HKPO/EdW/Mahler 6 George 1977, My favorite was Karajan again Some old post: Mahler symphony No.9 comtained the most moving music Mahler have ever written, from the `conflict between the elements of life and death' of the first movement, to the `dance of death' of second movement until the `self-conscious farewell to the world' of the final movement, it can really bring tears to the heart of stone. Mahler's symphony was very fortunate on record, I found three great version of Mahler's symphony no.9 on my shelf. Haitink's version was honest and direct, Barbirolli's version was fluent, but it was Karajan (live version) who can make this music sound heavenly. Bertini version was one of the slowest on record, the last movement last as long as 28 minutes, but Bertini's specially lyrical sense hang me on until the very last minute, benefit from the fact that it was a live recording, the playing was most affectionate and other-worldly, I soon forget where I was and was total immersed under the sound of the music. All in all, Bertini was a fine set, I especially love his live recording that was his first, eighth, ninth symphony and `Song of the earth', while others are honest and direct. In the end, Mahler's music are best heard live. After two weeks of Mahler's music, I really feel a bit exhausted in between, maybe due to the music itself, I was especially exhausted after listened to his sixth and seventh symphony, but after listened to Symphony no.9 and `Song of the earth' I have nothing in my mind but peace. I can only agree with Karajan: `It is music coming from another world, it is coming from eternity' ![]()

[#2531] HKPO/EdW/Mahler 9 邊個邊個 Morning! owe you DVD reviews of Szeryng and Gramiaux still! Certainly we could not forget the transcendtal and monumental live performance rendered by the late maestro karajan and BPO, the so-called "karajan sound" was perfectly demonstrated in this recording with his unusual warmth, glowing emotion, detailed nuance and steady tempo, all edges and contrasts were polished as beautiful and smooth as possible, an utter display of "karajan sound"! I know that some anti-karajan camp dislike his karajan-sound by virtue of his uniquely polishing techique (make-up effect) and bloomy sonority, we however could not deny its greatness and timelessness! but compare to Bernstein, I still insist Bernstein's neurotic account as first option! As far as I know, Karajan spent over 70 hours to make a rehearsal and hundred hours to read through the whole score of Mahler Symphony No.9, what a meticulous and time-consuming effort! no wonder the late music critic Arnold Schonberg at New York Times once wrote after listening karajan's live concert in New York "One of the greatest interpretation I have ever heard in my lifetime.." a truly indispensable account we Mahler freak should not be without!

[#2534] Lupu 的舒伯特鋼琴作品 george, Reading your musical review is a delight. Your comments on Lupu reminds me of the live performance years ago with him playing the Brahms piano concerto no.1, together with the Europian youth Orchestra, a truly unforgetable experience, one of the best Brahms 1 I heard.

[#2539] Lupu 的舒伯特鋼琴作品 Kh, I am flattered! Compare to CKM and your reviews, my review is simply nothing but ordinary and clumsy, indeed I favor a much concise and short essay, like CKM, DJ and your style! Lupu's has been my favourite since hearing his Schubert impromptu D899 & 935, an unforgettable rendition which enlightens my mind how beautiful and poetric shcubert's music should be, certainly Brendel's account seem having more viennese charm ! Still Lupu should not be underrated like this. So glad that you heard Lupu's live concert, he is undoubtedly a figure in my concert wish list if he visits HK. George

[#2547] HKPO/EdW/Mahler 6 There was a hot debate on how Mahler sixth should be performed, in fact this kind of controversy is not uncommon among classical music circle, the main reason root in the Mahler sixth symphony itself. In order to help us understand the background of Mahler's Sixth, May I draw your attention to the following words by Tony Duggan a Mahler specialist: ‘Mahler said "My Sixth will be asking riddles that can be solved only by a generation that has received and digested my first five." He was right. I believe the Sixth is the principal work of Mahler’s that performers and audiences are still coming to terms with, still solving those riddles, and so my conclusions here are perforce less emphatic, more provisional. No bad thing. Part of the response to great art is the constant asking of questions. That way we become more involved and maybe another generation must pass before we come close to pinning down what Mahler was doing in this work.’ http://www.musicweb.uk.net/Mahler/Mahler6.htm Indeed, Mahler enjoy his happiest time in his whole life when he compose his sixth symphony, His daughter was born, he was appointed as the Chief conuctor of Vienna Philharmonic, However he wrote a symphony which was most tragic ever, depicting a hero who was struck down by his own fate, signified by the three hammer blow at the end. Why was that? His wife have given us an explanation that Mahler foresee his tragical fate thereafter, but as a reasonable person we all know that it is impossible. On the intrepretation of this symphony, we still do not have a definitve answer yet. Some conductor may consider Mahler's Sixth as a modern music with traits of classical period (at least the sturcture of this symphony are classical four movement) like Szell, Boulez or Edo De Waarts this time; some may treat it as a melodrama like Tennstedt (or Bernstein according to Duggan); while some may treat it as a real tragedy like Baribolli. Which approach is the best? I am afraid even Mahler cannot give you an answer, maybe psychologist or psychiarist can. cclai870: can you enlighten us on your view of Edo de Waart intrepretation of Mahler's Sixth? My view on this symphony can be summerize in this painting by Klimt. ![]()
