| [#2694] Sibelius For Sibelius, I have never heard of a playing that was better than Heifetz, his cool personality, faultless technique, silky tone and his speical `ice fire' treatment put all other version into shade, even Oistrakh pale on comparison. Chung and Lin are some notable modern version.  |

| [#2696] Russian Favorite You'll have all the exciting moments of Solti here. I went to Pro Sound yesterday trying to find an Elgar Piano Quintet. I was surprised there were so little Elgar titles there, he must be grossly underrated and quite obviously there was nothing there about this less known work. I have the one with the Schubert Ensemble by ASV and the one with Piers Lane and the Vellingen String Quartet. Any recommendation of better versions and where can I find them? Thanks.  |

| [#2697] Delibes's Coppelia Last night also listened to first disc of newly brought Delibes Coppelia, on first listening I found that the music was very famailiar to me, I finally noted that I have another version of Coppelia Suite played by Karajan already. The music was lively, make me tap my feet involuntarily, recording was of demonstrative quality, recorded by another great engineer James Lock.  |

| [#2698] Elgar,'s piano Qunitet cpsjj, Naxos have a very good Elgar piano Quintet, I own and treasured this CD for a long time already, the music was lyrical and affectioate, an underrated masterpiece. The Quintet was played by Maggini Quartet and Donohoe, recording was excellent too.  |

| [#2700] In the mood of Tchaikovsky String Serenade 在浪漫時代F多的小夜曲作品中，我最喜愛的是由卡拉揚（Herbert von Karajan）指揮柏林愛樂演奏柴可夫斯基弦樂小夜曲的錄音(DG 400 038-2)。卡拉揚在錄柴記弦樂小夜曲時，採用的是大型樂團的80人編制，但在弱奏時音色就像一支小編制的室內樂團般，不可思議地精雕細剁。柏林愛樂的弦樂在卡拉揚的指揮棒下，琢磨得毫無棱角 (典型的 Karajan Sound特色!) ，清純和諧的音色有如管風琴般，線條的交織七彩繽紛，各聲部美不勝收。大高潮的堆砌與推進，弧形wide-screen般的浩翰音響，揮之不去的病態美與滄桑，扣人心弦！柏林愛樂的弦樂聲部，在卡拉揚的手上不只具有無比韌性，音色更是充滿了芬芳馥鬱的脂粉味，風華絕代！如果嫌卡拉揚的指揮風格脂粉味過重(或者認為BPO過度打磨的音色非常滑漏! 不耐聽!)，由Marinner指揮聖馬田室樂團 (Philips) 的錄音是首屈一指替代版本，陽剛味的正面健康同樣的扣人心弦！ 我最喜歡柴可夫斯基弦樂小夜曲的第二樂章 - 圓舞曲 (Valse)。塵世間竟然有作曲家能夫子自道，將男人感性的浪漫情懷刻劃得如此入木三分，打破了語言與文字所能表達的局限！它既沒有沈溺放縱，但悅耳的唯美感卻觸動人類靈魂深處最敏感的神經。 George  |

| [#2704] In the mood of Tchaikovsky String Serenade chowhk 兄臺所言貼切! 很難理解某些 “anti-Karajan”派之闡述 ，要是大師的指揮風格脂粉味過重，為什麼他的馬勒第九(1981), 布魯克納第七 (1988), 布拉姆斯交響曲全集 (1960s & 1975), 布魯克納交響曲全集 (1975),貝多芬交響曲全集 (1962 & 1977), 舒曼交響曲全集, 柴可夫斯基交響曲全集, 華格納的樂劇, 義大利歌劇, 均是首屈一指或有代表性的詮釋!擁護Celibidache的你可能批評Karajan處理巴洛克音樂 (Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart)的方法非常華麗, 缺少棱角, 過度著迷追求完美的造句, 圓滑的音色, 匠氣十足! 無法感動愛樂人等深層的理由…. 假如沒有karajan, 古典音樂是否死得更快le? 但是我們無可否認Karajan 對浪漫時期作品的詮釋及對精湛技藝的堅持, 絕對是無可匹敵, 后無來者! 小弟我的首張古典CD正正是 Adagio! 好好聽ah! | [#2705] In the mood of Tchaikovsky String Serenade Strictly speaking, I belong to the anti-Karajan side if I am to pick a side. Karajan focused way too much on smoothness and grandness in the later half of his career. He had some legendary recordings but he also over softening and over romanticizing (in the cheesy romantic definition) a lot of works. His first half is much better to me before he coined the "karajan sound". I do like his opera a lot thou. |

I however do prefer his "karajan sound" if he could beautify or soften those modern music works such as Schoenberg, Webern, Richard Strauss (romance period indeed!), the effect itself is simply unforgettable and attractive, even some music critic and fans dislike this so-called "karajan sound" (featuring over-polishing, making-up the phrasing and over-romantizing the passages, still his readings of Richard Strauss, Wagner, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky are irreplaceable in his last decade (1979-89), indulgent? absolutely! just a matter of preference and taste. Even I advocate "Karajan sound", it does not mean that my taste deter me to appreciate other styles such as Celibidache, Karl Bohm, Gunter Wand, Georg Szell, Fritz Reiner and Carlos Kleiber, they are all my favourite conductors in my music searching journey! BenYC, please write more! we need your opposite opinion! George |

But there is no denial that under his reign, BPO had achieved orchestral playing of the highest standard and with no equal. Luckily, this standard has been maintained at present, not corruoted by the 'Rattling" sound. BPO live, once heard,is difficult to forget. When the whole orchestra played in unison, when every details wetre heard clearly, the result was mesmerizing. |

| [#2708] Karajan 我年輕時有一段時間，不喜歡Karajan，認2他太做作，太賣弄他對樂隊的控制，但慢慢下來，我體會到指揮霸主的吸引力，他是一位明星，有強烈的個性，透過他的努力，把古典音樂帶到一個高峰，他死去后，樂壇失去了光芒四射的明星，少了一位有爭議的人物，反而暫趨冷落凋零。 他不是萬能，但是他演繹的一定令樂迷樂意買票，買唱片，也一定|得過癮。 |
