For Beethoven Violin Sonatas, I think Itzhak Perlman with Vladimir Ashkenazy will be good. Although I only have no 5 & 9.

Listen to RTHK4 this morning, first movement of Brucker Symphony no.4 is great. Any suggestion?

There mentions Brahms is left handed and it plays piano concerto no.2 2nd movement as an example.

[#2740] Beethoven Violin Sonata
Hi erictang, for Bruckner's 4th ("Romantic"), one can't afford to ignore Boehms's 1973 version with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. There is a Decca CD in its "Legends" series (466 374). The recording, made in the spacious acoustics of Sofiensaal in Vienna, has splendid detail and firm sound. It hardly tells its age.

Bought this one today $160 4CD.
Have only listened to first movement of no.9, performance is very good.
It is OK to me sonically although not very good (not bright and clear).

Have listened a few other recordings today:
Perlman/Argerich
Zukerman/Barenboim
Milstein/Pludermacher (the last recital)
Perlman/Ashkeanzy

About performance, I perfer Perlman/Ashkeanzy & Oistrakh/Oborin

Hi erictang, I have not had the chance to listen to Oistrakh/Oborin, but Perlman/Ashkenazy has long been my favorite. I bought their complete set (4 CDs) in the Decca "Ovation" series (421 452) released in 1988 more than a decade ago. It's a treasurable set.

Hi erictang, my only Anda's Mozart piano concerto is in the Philips "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" series. I have listened to it (either the 20th or 21st, I forgot). My impression is that it's very stylish and the sound is not bad at all.

My Ashkenazy's Beethoven piano sonatas include the widely available Double Decca 28th-32nd sonatas, recorded in the 1970s. I am also the owner of the following, which I suspect is not easy to come acoss nowadays:
Piano Sonatas Nos. 21 “Waldstein”; 23 “Appassionata”; & 14 “Moonlight”
Vladimir Ashkenazy [r.September 1988–June 1989]
Decca 425 838-2: DDD 1990
The sound is not as firm as Ashkenazy's other Decca recordings in the 70s (for instance, his Chopin). In terms of music-making, this is not very successful either. His rivals are too strong in these works (Rubinstein, Richter et al.).
BTW, when the name Ashkenazy and Beethoven are mentioned together, perhaps one should be reminded of this glorious set:

Hi trollope,
Again, there is complete Beethoven Sonata set by Ashkenazy and chopin (various pieces) at $40 per disc. I like Ashkenazy's Chopin Etudes but don't have Ashkenazy on the other Chopin pieces. Pollini's Etudes, Polonaises and Sonata are also very good.

I'm listening Gilels' Beethoven, no.2 , 3 ... etc. Very good. It's a pity that No.1 is missing.

Some sharing of violinists (純粹個人睇法):

Kriesler: I love his playing. His playing 好有性格, even Heifetz cannot win him in this aspect.

Heifetz: 一代霸主, 無話可說. (你地可能仲知得多過我.)

Oistrakh: One of my favourite violinists. In fact, many of my violin (recitals/concertos) CDs are Oistrakh's recordings. His violin sound is warm and firm. I read a magazine reviewer's comments who mentioned that Oistrakh's playing is firm and magnificent (宏偉), just like marble (大理石). Also, during an interview, a reporter asked Oistrakh about playing virtuoso pieces (if one notices, there're very few or no Oistrakh's recordings of showpieces by Ysaye, Paganini, etc), Oistrakh replied that he didn't play technically difficult pieces. However, the fact is that Oistrakh's technique is among the top of his piers, and can play very difficult pieces..... His recordings of Sibelius Violin Concerto and Brahms Violin Sonatas (with Richter) are my favourites.

Perlman: His playing is warm and romantic. (Maybe a bit too warm to me, his vibrato is too much perhaps....) Technically speaking, he's very good and is among the best in his generation. I read one article saying that Perlman wanted to come close to Heifetz in terms of techniques, so Perlman played Heifetz's LP (I remember it's Tschaikovsky Violin Concerto) and played/practised at the same time (note by note). I went to his recital concert in HK many years ago, really top class playing.

Sophie Mutter: I bought her concerto recordings when I was a beginner in classical music. However, it's not her playing that attracted me, actually I was attracted to Karajan's conducting....(Karajan may not be the best conductor in many people's opinion, but as a beginner, buying his records can't be too wrong...) Mutter's playing is romantic and stable. Her technique is good too (but not in the rank of Oistrakh or Milstein, IMO, not in the rank of Perlman too....). Nevertheless, as a contemporary violinist, she's one of the violinists that I like. I long to go to her concerts, but I missed them though she has come to HK for 2 times (or more). Just a pity.... I like her Mozart Violin Concertos (No 3 & 5, DG).

Henryk Szeryng's voice is romantic without having contrived to be so. As his listener, you are instantly aware that you are the recipient of a large amount of human kindness, through the the sound he so effortlessly makes. He a great human being, SO THAT he is a great musician. His musical achievement does not reach the same height as Oistrakh, there is little doubt about that. My Oistrakh's Brhams concerto (EMI) remains my top choice for this piece, although I have just listened to Szeryng's with LSO/Monteux in XRCD-24 format. In short, Szeryng is in a class of his own, as all great artists are.

Hi erictang, I count myself as a Pollini fan too, his Chopin sonatas and Liszt sonata are wonderful. But don't you find that starting in the 90s he has become less rewarding? Ashkenazy is always a safe choice, particularly in Chopin. His conducting career is fruitful as well. My favorite Sibelius cycle remains the Philharmonia Orch. under his baton made in the 80s (Decca).

About Brahms violin concert, I found Stern's playing very involving. Especially those passages he demo to the lady in 'from Moa to Mozart'.
In the record (conducted by ormandy), he plays those psssages exactly the same way.

I visit a 2nd hand LP shop yesterday, it is playing a DGG Milstein Bach violin sonata & partitas, the boss says Henryk Szeryng plays even better.

I've only got Milstein (DGG) and Mintz, and peronally, I found Milstein (on DGG) plays better than Mintz. Does anyone encounter the Szeryng?

I found Milstein mono Bach is much better than his DGG stereo, better in terms of both performance and recording quality wise.
