[#2731] Stray Dog

The "Stray dog" refers to cclai, who posts after you. I know him. A person who does not know anything about music. Anyone who knows him knows he basically has nothing to do with HKPO, and rarely, if ever, attends concert by the HKPO. A person who knows basically nothing about classical music, aperson who holds music with content in contempt. AND a person who knows nothing about hifi, not to say horns.

[#2732] CD and LP
Hi Eric, yep I remember. Yep, I am not solely a classical fan. : )

I'm still at a stage to concentrate more on different musical pieces, rather than different versions of performance.

The more you know about classical, the less you realize you know about it. At least this is how I feel.

Many Klaus Tennstedt recordings are out-of-print.

This is a cheap and excellent demonstration of Tennstedt's art.

[#2735] Stray Dog
doctorjohn,

A friend of mine informed me regarding your "Stray Dog" reply. I thought I had already stopped posting
anymore script onto this web-site, but I have to return once more because I am totally disappointed in a person like you who is a regular writer on this site.

Not everyone is as fortunate as you who understand classical music (or in your case you think you understand all about music so well). I thought I was never going to give you harsh word in public.

I am sorry I ever enter into this web-site in the first place. I intended to quit to avoid any future
conflicts, this time you have really gone too far especially to someone post his message after me happens to be a beginner to classical music and also an audiophile beginner, he should be encouraged in this rewarding hobby and entertainment rather than allowing people like you bringing him down heavily just because you think you are the superior. Unless you change you attitude (I hope I am wrong for saying the following) you may find yourself having less friends. None of your friends will ever wanted to be trashed publicly by person like you.

I felt sorry I was harsh on my first article to you in counter comment to your comment posted prior because I could not understand your attitude when our conductor EDW and HKPO are trying to improve and then excel in their performance such as Mahler 6 deserve comment from you like that. After I expressed my opinion against your opinion Since then I took a milder tone in my wordings because it is childish probably on my part to carry on to challenge the difference in opinion.

I deliberately avoid any further discussion about concert halls and seating after I make some recommendation of seat to one of the viewer of this webs-site based on my own experience and like to share some of my experience, but it seems you also have something to say about it. This is the whole reason why I quit when there are people like you out there. It is pointless when I only try to help and may end up getting challenged. At first I wanted to know what are you trying to prove, on second thought, I rather forget about what is in your mind. You see music is much better for my ears (especially different versions of Mahler 6) than posting unhappy thoughts in the web-site.

After my second post, I did suggest to you if you are so unhappy about Edo de Waart's performance, you should have a discussion with him in person and express you specific dislike on his performance. Should you think you understand more music than our maestro who had close to 50 years of professional music experience and he happens to be the world renowned orchestra trainer as well. Doctorjohn, you should challenge Edode Waart's job in HKPO if you believe you can conduct HKPO to perform Mahler symphony they way you describe.

Surely, no one is perfect, even the best orchestra in the world makes technical mistakes. An orchestra such as HKPO under training cannot expect to shine like the first class orchestra in the world at the moment, but we held high hope they will make it. Edo de Waart is trying hard to bring HKPO to technical perfection before engage the next stage of the training. All the HKPO players are all professional musicians who undertook university
studies and some even further studies in music, I am sure any one of them understand more music than you and I. This is of course without mention about EDW's experience and knowledge. By the way, I attended concerts prior to Edo de Waart's days and I must say HKPO are far better orchestra today than they ever been. Again, if you are unhappy about EDW's conduct M6, talk to him.

I am a music lover and enjoyed every concert by HKPO and other Hong Kong orchestras (including the SAR Philharmonics - an amateur orchestra, they performed most Mahler Symphonies and this included Mahler 8 at CCCH last year, the players - some professional from all the HK orchestras plus amateur, they all donated their valuable time in the concert for charity which I believe as citizen of Hong Kong, we should give them more support).

doctorjohn, I hope this message can get through to you once and for all, those who think they are superior without solid foundation will eventually fall.

I have nothing to write in this post ever again because I am so disappointed.

*******************************************************************************************************
To all other readers,

I thank you for your kind support and I wish you all to enjoy good music whenever and wherever you can. Stop being picky, open your mind to accept the performance in front of you whether they are live concerts or CD, LP playback, musicians spent their time and effort to make it happen for you to enjoy.

Once again, thank you for your kind attention.

[#2737] Bruckner/Tennstedt

I just finished listening yo these 2 CD's.

In terms of recording, they are excellent.

In terms of performance, they are great. I think they are even better than this already good review, by a serious reviewr:

A great starter kit for those who do not know Bruckner.

Schumann and Grieg piano concerto was a very good couple in recording industry, numerous pianist have put their stamp on this two works. Andsnes's playing was fresh and spontaneous, make this two warhorse sound new, he have set a new standard.

What a pity that you ultimately decided to sign off this thread!

Please share and contribute more as you are a senior audiophile and music lovers, as a young audiophile I am, I have a lot to learn from you. I did read your posts about EDW and agree with you that HKPO under the baton of EDW has improved a lot, still a long long way to go! If HKPO likes to grow maturely as a world class orchestra at the same league as COA or BPO, encouragement and criticism are indispensable impetus to squeeze their last drop of potential, now you tend to be a supporter giving encouragement towards HKPO but DJ chose to be a music critic against EDW’s style only, I genuinely believe that both gentlemen are out of love and care, instead of malicious criticism or blind support. We need your both civilized enlightenment and dialogue.

I however do agree with DJ saying in his post dated 07-12-08 22.52 that the provocative “stray dog” remark does not aim at you personally at all, instead a long-term rival who always “go after” (DJ, is this the reason you use this provocative adjective?) his comment due to their serious disagreement and quarrel before in other threads. If you read through the threads of JC letterbox and 發燒圈 page by page, then you can approximately figure out what furious problem happened before between DJ and cclai870.

DJ can rationally discuss the music style and conductor approach with you about live music-making and canned music by grounds and experience sharing, even you disagree with his criticism nor dislike his harsh tone upon EDW. You are always free to advocate EDW by illustrating your reasons. He can be a nice gentleman if you treat him politely and rationally, but become very critical , rude and somehow harsh if you assault him personally. [remark: know this guy not more than 3 months although, he is a privately nice and funny chap indeed!]What fatal wrongdoing you have made was your first post dated 07-11-29 23:32 launching with a personal assault and groundless speculation in arrogant manner, almost amounting to a challenge against him, that why chowhk, behop and I jumped out to stop you saying emotionally, I feel pity that you lost a rational dialogue with DJ on music specifically!

I however feel interesting that you sought DJ to have dialogue with EDW face-to-face, would it be possible at all to arrange us having dialogue with EDW during the rehearsal or the concert aftermath?

Sincerely invite you to join our yumcha activity in the forthcoming Sunday, hope both of you can have amicable settlement even if you disagreed with his criticism upon your idol, EDW.

Wish you all the best
Please dun leave us! Keep making "noise"!

[#2743] HKPO/Sibelius

07/12/2007
HKPO/Hagner/Atherton/Sibelius
CCCH

The all Sibelius programme was a challenging one but, judging from the attendance, unfortunately poison for the box office.

The orchestra was lackadaisical in the first half, perhaps still reeling from the Mahler performances. But then, come to think of it, the orchestra always need time to focus under Atherton. The opening Karelia suite was carefully played, but rather pale and lacking in rhythmic poise. The familiar Alla Marcia lacked verve.

The young Vivian Hagner returned to play the Sibelius concerto. She tried to engage us not only with her playing, but also with her rather pronounced body motion. The playing was committed and detailed in the slower passages, but in the more rapid passages many notes were a little smeared or barely touched upon. Her tone was good and projected quite reasonably well. The orchestra playing was rather unfocused.

The second half featured Symphony #6, surely one of the most inscrutable work in the Sibelius canon. Atherton and the orchestra transformed themselves, and gave a sterling rendition. The symphony can sound rhapsodic in lesser hands, but this performance was surely flowing, with nicely gauged dynamics and excellent playing from all departments. Surely the best conducting I’ve heard from Atherton, and a vast improvement from the 4th of last time. The ensuing Finlandia was also better than previously, gaining increased dynamism.

For the whole night the orchestra did not sound coarse. Particularly excellent playing form the horns.

[#2744] HKPO/Sibelius

DJ,

I didn't see you on Friday. Where were you? We could have dined together.

Vivian Hagner is lovely. She obviously needed some time for warming up and it was quite unfortunate that she wasn't at her best in the first movement, but she managed to catch up towards the later part of the cadenza. There were quite a lot of mistakes made throughout but she was forgiven as she played with her heart and wasn't particularly cautious with her inadequacy to maintain the flow. Hey, this is a live concert; I bought her debut CD but I must say I was somewhat disappointed with the studio performance.

As for Atherton and HKPO in the Sibelius 6, I'm quite surprised that I think I heard the sweetest strings from the HKPO in recent days.

[#2748] Sibelius

I am devoted to Sibelius, but I caanot say I understand (in my case, meaning "feel") all of his works. Works like the 6th symphony works far better in the concert hall than in recordings.

Aside from the violin concerto, the safe place to start would be Symphony 1 and 2.

The golden reference for #2, in interpretation as well as sound, remains Barbirolli's performance with the Royal Phli. It's impossible not to react to the grandeur of the finale (but it takes a long while to get there).

This reviewer says it better than I can say it:

"Amazon.com
The Second is Sibelius's most popular symphony, thanks to its surging melodies and glowing orchestration, and also because it calls for the absolute, standard Romantic orchestra with no "extras," making it economical to perform. But it's by no means easy. The finale, in particular, often seems to come around one time too many when the conductor fails to keep the music moving smartly along. John Barbirolli made a specialty of this symphony, and clearly he solved all of its interpretive problems. He just plays the music as excitingly as possible, all the way through, and the result blazes forth from your speakers like a comet flashing across the night sky. --David Hurwitz "

This CD may be a little hard to get, but it's eminently worthwhile.
