Indeed Richter's WTC is a far cry from a textbook performance because of his strong personality, but exactly for the same reason, his rendition has a number of interesting moments, not least in the Prelude and Fugue No. 8 in E flat minor (10'51"). My WTC is part of the JVC Victor 10-CD box set (VICC-60351-60, 20 bit K2) entitled "Sviatoslav Richter Collection Box" (sic) realeased in 2003.

[#2779] Beethoven Violin Sonata
Just listen to Beethoven Piano Sonata Of Gilels (DGG) & John O'Conor (Telarc)

No.5, I like the tempo of John O'conor on first movement.
Second movement, Gilels is much more expressive (11'45) verse Conor (6'58) and tempo is a major factor.
Third movement, Conor is a bit rush.
As a whole, Gilels has a better pharsing, expressive, handling of the melodic line of the left hand. Conor is more straight forward.
But I like how Conor plays those forceful explosive chords (first & third movements)
and the ending of the third movement

There follows some sampling on No.6 & 7.
Gilels plays very well in the No.6 third movement fugue style melodic line.

Gilels' No.7 is breathtaking, especially the opening.

Hi erictang, nice job. Go on, if you are not too tired tonight (just kidding, tomorrow being Monday and now being rather late into the night) and I would like to hear your opinion of Gilels's "Hammerklavier", an interpretation hailed by the Penguin Guide as "Olympian, subtle, imperious, one of the finest ever recorded."

Hi trollope,
Gilel's No.29 is Gramophone Award winner 1984. Conor and Ashkenazy are also on the Gramophone recommended list. Luckly I also have this Conor CD.

Sonically, Gilel is much better (also better than his No.5), sort of crystal clear. Just listen to the first minute, Conor sounds blur, maybe due to his pedalling (or due to recording). Gilel's crescendo in 25 to 30 second is obvious.

As I'm not familiar with this piece, will listen to it tomorrow. Better to play Mozart instead of Beethoven (especailly this late period Beethoven) in the mid-night.

[#2783] Beethoven Violin Sonata
In the first movement, there are lots of very brillant bright high notes, does Horowitz record this Sonata before (just joking) ?
I guess his playing will be more feather light and crystal clear.

By the way, Pollini is also on the recommended list of these late Sonata.

trollope,

I saw Richter's box-set of Bach today (JVC). However, the descriptions at the back are Japanese. Are all the descriptions and booklets in Japanese?

I like Pollini's playing too. Before I knew Rubenstein, I bought Pollini's Chopin Polonaise in my early years of classical music. Though a bit cold, but it stays as one of the Chopin CD that I like (Ashkenazy to me is too stable and no-surprise....). I got Pollini's recording of Beethoven Piano Concerto No 5 with Bohm at the baton. This also stays as one of my favourites too. Highly recommended.

Hi DL,
I am afraid the materials printed in the JVC Victor boxset are all in Japanese. This set is rather expensive too. If you are to invest in the cheaper Japanese BMG RCA (Red Seal) version (black covers with grey print font), also released in Japan but more readily available in HK, you will find that again everything is in Japanese as well. This set was released in 2002, cat.no. BVCC-37139-42, with 24 bit/96 KHz remastering and K2 technology. If you insist in English notes, try to find RCA GD 60949 set, which should still be around. The 4-CD JVC set you saw in a shop (HK Records or HMV?) yesterday must be the Victor edition. It is remastered with 20bit K2. It's rather crazy of me, but I am the owner of all the above editions. My Victor version is included in a 10-CD boxset entitled “Sviatoslav Richter Collection Box” (sic), VICC-60351-60 (2003). The entire set is meticulously produced, with 15 Richter photos, two of which featuring the maestro in Japanese gown! Apart from the complete WTC, there are also a handful of Beethoven, Schumann, and Schubert. His Schumann’s Symphonic Etudes is full of magic and Schubert’s final sonata (no. 21, D.960) in his hands is pure gold and very touching indeed.

I don't think Horowitz had records Beethoven's "Hammaklavier". How about you guys try Brendal's, his Beethoven is very good and highly appreciate by professional pianists.

As for Bach's WTC, I love Richter's, though too much personality, as said earlier. If you want to listen "Bach Style", why not go for Glen Gloud? His Bach is on the top rank. Also Angela Hewatt, she is a new generation Bach's great interpretor.

Dear Mutter,

Sorry to interrupt.
I think Horowitz has not recorded Sonata Hammaklavier.
His Beethoven record is limited to around six Sonatas (Moonlight, Appassionata....), Variation in C Minor and No. 5 Piano Concerto merely.

BTW, his Sacrlatti is worthy to listen.

Happy Listening

You can buy Richter's WTC from Mainland China under the brand name Polo Arts (普羅藝術) with the same contents of JVC's.

Hi Ocean,

That's my point too, Horowitz had not recorded that Sonata, honestly, his Beethoven has not won much fame, even though I'm his fans :)

It is a shame that the sound quality of all his Tchi Piano Concerto No. 1 records are bad.

I particularly love his 50's chopin recordings, full of passions and energy.

Hi mutter

Thx for your reply.
I admire Horowitz, too. It is not coincident because Horowitz's fans are everywhere.

I have read some books about Horowitz. I guess Horowitz is not a pianist digging deep into the content of music works as other pianists do. He just directly interpretes them. Well, the point is for certain music works, it seems to be better playing in this way.

Yes, I agree the sounding of his Tch No. 1 is not good which fails to thorough show his technique.

Have you hear his Beethoven Piano concerto No. 5 conducted Reiner? Pls listen to the 2nd movement which proves Horowitz is not just a great pianist but a musician.

Sorry to jump in. For Beethoven's piano sonata, Wilhelm Kempff (spelling) might be a good choice. Nothing too dramatic or overly heavy. Just like the music flows by itself.
