[#2797] Beethoven Violin Sonata For someone who hasn't listen much to Mahler, which of his recordings are good to start? Please suggest recordings that have good sound but not overly expensive.

[#2798] Beethoven Violin Sonata Hi ranger, you may well start with a disc on Mahler's slow movements. There is very nice CD sold in HMV ($45) entitled "Mahler - Adagios" (HMV Classics 5 73384 2). It contains slow movements from sym 4, 5, 6, & 9, with Tennstedt conducting the London Philharmonic Orch.

[#2803] Haydn Quartet I also have Kempff Beethoven Piano Sonata LP set. Will listen to it later. Hi trollope, because of working late, I have only listen the first & second movements of "Hammerklavier". Beware below is only my peronal opinion and I'm no more than an amateur classical music fans. So please don't take it serious. When compare to Conor, Gilels has strong contrast between soft/loud and expressive. The second movement, much of the 'Scherzo' melody is based on groups for 4 notes (soft-loud-loud-soft; long-short-short-long). Maybe Conor is playing faster, so the last notes of each group is relatively long. Gilels' playing is slower and clear cut; as a whole, a stronger Scherzo feel. The tune changed at about 50 second onwards, Gilels' playing is better phrased and expressive. But Conor's left hand melodic line is a clearer. Conor's scale at 1'40 is not clear enough, maybe a bit too much pedal. But I like how he plays the groups of notes after the scale. Gilel's playing at 2'41 is forceful and energetic. Recording wise, the one of Conor is not very good and I don't know how this will discount the contrast between soft/loud and cresendo.

[#2804] Haydn Quartet Some typo, revised as below: The second movement, much of the 'Scherzo' melody is based on groups of 4 notes (soft-loud-loud-soft; long-short-long-short).

[#2805] Haydn Quartet Hi Ocean Hing, I got whole set of Horowitz RCA, Sony and DG records, but I seldom listen to Beethoven 5th cuz I don't like it much, but I agree that Horowitz's music is not only showing off his technique, good example are his recordings of Mozart in DG seasons. Wilhelm Kempff is a great musician, I once read a book about great Pianist, their comment on Kempff is "just listen to his music, don't challenge his technique". I think it's true, his interpertation and performance is so natural, without much personality. His recordings of Beethoven violin sonata with Menuhin is great as well. As for Mahler lovers, we are lucky that Edo De Waar (hope I spell it correct) will lead HK Phil to perform whole Mahler's Symphonies. But I don't have much records on those, one I got is Karajan conducts Mahler's 9, but it's such a long pieces that I still can't listen the whole patiently :p

[#2806] Haydn Quartet Hello again Eric, let's dwell on a bit longer on "Hammerklavier". I have in my collection 23 different versions (some by the same pianists). Who do you think play the slowest 3rd movement?

[#2810] Haydn Quartet ranger, If you want to try Mahler Symphony with vocal/choral part, try starting with Mahler 1 and then 5 (or vice versa is still O.K.). If you're O.K. with vocal/choral part included, then you can try Mahler 2 first. EMI has a budgetary box-set by Klaus Tennstedt. It's just around $200 for 9 Mahler Symphonies - a very good bargain. Tennstedt's set is good, though there may be some other better performance for individual Mahler symphonies.... ![]()

[#2811] Haydn Quartet Hi all, Just finished listening to Paganini Violin Concerto No.1 played by Yehudi Menuhin. Many violinist stressed on virtuosity when playing Paganini, but Menuhin stressed on the musical aspect. Menuhin's version may not be the best or monumental, but is quite enjoyable for listening. Just some sharings....

A missing item I would love to listen to: Richard Goode on the label "Nonesuch". I have his last three sonatas by Beethoven released in Japan (WPCS-21131). Very touching and glorious sound. |
