[#2770] HKPO/Sibelius Went to the concert on Sat. night. By his standard Atherton gave one of his best performance in collaboration with HKPO. Vivian Hagner, the soloist gave a solid performance of this difficult piece, despite some minor faults. She had the feel of the music, and her Strad tone was sweet and touching. This is Hagner's return engagement with HKPO.

Hagner appeared in 2005:

"...Although the headliner of this instalment of Simply Classic is Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, David Atherton also conducts the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra in Weber's Oberon Overture, Chabrier's España, and Falla's The Three-Cornered Hat. Viviane Hagner stars as soloist in the concerto in the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall at 8pm on May 13 and 14. Tickets are priced at $280, $200, $140 and $80..."

I was there at the concert. She played much as she played this time. Atehrton was not too good that day.

Please note that HKPO raised ticket price 50% since then.

Szell's Sibelius I think is limited to Symphony #2, a rather shut-in recording on Philips, thought the interpretation is good. Another famous recording is Monteux. But I do think Barbirolli/RPO tops them in both interpretation and rtecorded sound.

A NOTE ON THIS RECORDING

This recording was made in Vienna in 1952 and is one of the classics of the gramophone. It is one of the three recordings of the work conducted by Bruno Walter, who was Mahler's close friend in addition to being an interpreter who enjoyed the conposer's confidence. He was seventy-six when he conducted this performance, which has as tenor soloist Julius Patzak, one of the legendary stars of the Vienna Opera and an unforgettable Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio. Something of the heroism he brought to that role can be heard here.

As contralto soloist there is Kathleen Ferrier, the British singer whose career did not really begin ntil 1943 when she was thirty-one and lasted only ten glorious years until her death in 1953 from cnacer. Walter passionately admired her singing. She first sang The Song of the Earth with Walter at the first Edinburgh Festival in 1947 (with Peter Pears as the tenor soloist). She was in tears towards the end and omitted the final "ewig". When she apologised to Walter for such unprofessional conduct, he made the magnificiant reply: "My dear Miss Ferrier, if we were all such artists as you, we would all have been in tears."

Ferrier's singing of Mahler was entirely intuitive. She had a natural synpathy with his idiom, an idiom she had to discover for herself, for ther were few Mahler performances during her training days. It is scarely possible to listen to this recorded performance without taking into account the personal circmstances of the artists concerned - Walter, the composer's friend, and Ferrier, who knew while she was making the recording that it was her own Abschied, that she would see the lovely earth grow green again only once more. Like Mahler she answered the challenge of a death sentence by reaching the pinnacle of her art. Yes, she shows some strain on her top G, but the radiance, vibrancy and transcendental compassion of her singing here place it beyond the reach of carping criticism.

It's interesting you mentioned "The Swan of Tuonela", which counts among my favorite Sibelius. and my favorite tone poem of his.

My favorite recording may be difficult to source in HK.
