[#2816] Haydn Quartet
Trollope

Gee, you do have a lot of versions!

Hmm you've got got taste!

I would in fact rate the London RFH Richter as 1st on the list though : P

Here's what Richter said about the performance:

" I can't work out whether this recording should be issued or not. The concert went well ( there was even an old gentleman who leapt up and down in his enthusiasm), there are virtually no wrong notes and everything is clear. I think I'll risk it and give my permission. Even so, there's something ( what?) that doesn't entirely satisfy me about this interpretation. I don't like myself."

Hi yonyung, your quote, I suspect, is from Bruno Monsaingeon. Welcome aboard, glad to meet another Richter fan here. SR's "Hammerklavier" is one of his greatest contributions to the art of music-making. It's a pity that he never recorded this piece after 1975, and indeed never before it.
My preference or prejudice regarding Annie Fischer: her B flat major sonata produces both intensity and poetry, both deeply moving. Very stylish indeed.
On Richter again, I also adore his Schubert No. 21. Of the 33 different versions in my possession, 5 are by SR.

Yea, where else can you get Richter information in English!

33 version of Schubert!!?? Wow!

I have no idea how many versions I have, but I have to agree 100% with you that the "late style" SR's Schubert is absolutely sublime. The artists's live FED, Olympias etc are unforgetable!

I hessitate to imagine how many CDs you have !

as to Annie Fischer

I buy it immediately like a reflex action when I see a new title irrespective of repertoire!

Cheers

[#2821] Help needed
Dear all,

In 1990-91, I rent a LD (limited edition) from KPS which was Beethoven 9 choral, conducted by Karajan. with a thyme of 'ode to freedom' The LD began with crowds crying and digging the berlin wall. Karajan close his eyes during conducting and at the last movement, he sings with his mouth movement till the end.

Does anyone here watch this LD before?
and could I find DVD version of that particular version?

(p.s. thanks Mutter hing told this was 1974 version, but I want to be more certain before I go to buy it^_^)

diyfty,

From my knowledge, there're 2 DVD versions of Karajan conducting Beethoven 9 (other Hi-Hands, please correct me if I'm wrong...). One is released by DG - the older 1970s version, and the other is released by EMI - the newer 1980s version. The DG one is more preferred.

I own the DG one, but there's no wall-breaking in the DVD version (not sure about LD). I've also watched Karajan conducting Beethoven Symphony No. 5 on DVD (though I don't own it). Actually, for both DVDs, Karajan closed his eyes during conducting. Some critics said that Karajan often conducted with eyes closed (this was confirmed when I watched another DVD that included an interview of previous BPO members). Also some critics said that Karajan was more like acting than conducting during video recording!

Anyway, hope the information helps....

mutter,

Thanks for sharing! I don't have many Paganini Violin Concerto No.1 recordings. Just Accardo, Menuhin and Kreisler (1st movement only) only. Some reviewers suggested the one by Mullova/Neville Marriner. I'll try to find the Perlman one later.

Hello again jonyung, in that case your Fischer is my Richter, so it's very likely that you own more Fischer than me. Good for you. The bulk of my Fischer are from Hungaroton and EMI, while several others are from BBC and Palexa. It's a shame she is not included in the Philips "Great Pianists of the 20th Century" set, but that tells more about the set's poverty than Fischer's art.

hello!

I don't think I own anymore Fischer CDs than you, just the ones you described as well as some dante/arrlechinos.

I love richter's art and have been on and off collecting for some time, what puts me off a few yrs ago was that I find I keep buying the same recording but with a different label/package/wrong recording date/wrong recording ... So, as a result, I end up buying less richter, thinking that I've got that version etc and then sometimes finding out that I don't have that version and then... sold out!!

I still remember the days when getting a new version of Richter's Bach/Schubert/Beethoven was a real joy.

I've not had a single copy of the great pianist series for the same reason, and I think I am losing out, but sometimes its just too much work trying to find whether what's inside the CD ....

Just listen to Bach Violin Sonata No.1 2nd movement. Among the recordings below, I found Szeryng's playing is the best. The fugue line is clearly played. Even in those multiple stopping passage. Milstein is a bit hurry.

Szeryng (DGG)
Grumiaux (Philips)
Milstein (DGG)
Mintz (DGG)

Hi jonyung,

Both are good and worth buying if you interested in Chopin music, by the way, do you have the Rubinstein's Chopin Collection? It's better to get it first as a reference, Rubinstein's Chopin is the most admire.

Hi DL,

Menuhin's Paganini is good also, if you are not into Paganini's concerto, I think Menuhin is enough :)

Yeah, the Rubenstein's box-set of Chopin is a definitive reference (another set is Cortot's).

mutter, thanks for your message.

To all,

I did some searching in the Internet for information about Mahler, and came across a listening guide:
