| [#2836] Mahler Guide Surely Rubinstein's Chopin (RCA) is the yardstick by which others are judged. Meanwhile, Ashkenazy's is a safe choice, often not as inspired as Rubinstein, but the recording sound is consistently better, with a pleasing bloom and presence around it. He never really disappoints me. The Decca 13-CD set is now sold at HMV at the modest price of $520. To return to Rubinstein, one might be tempted to explore the Japanese RCA Red Seal Best 100 edition, but I doubt there is a complete Chopin set. I have the 2-CD complete nocturnes, remastered with 20-bit coding. The piano timbre sounds firmer yet cleaner, and more real, so much so that the recording date seems unbelievable: August 1965. |

| [#2838] Mahler Guide There's a indeed a box-set of complete Chopin recordings of Rubinstein for RCA Victor (not all Chopin pieces). It's a 11 CDs set and I bought it many years ago (1991) when it first released. Seems that RCA released another gigantic set for all Rubinstein recordings for them, and stopped releasing the Chopin set. I remembered I still saw a box in the record store in Tsing Yi some months ago, but not sure if it's still there. Amazon is selling a Japanese version of the Rubinstein/Chopin set. | [#2839] Rubinstein Chopin In Amazon, the Japanese version is around USD 271.49, i.e. around HK$ 2116 (freight cost not included)! Just found the cover of my Rubinstein box-set in www.hmv.co.jp. HMV Japan imported the set from Germany, and it costs just 4990 yen! That's around HK$380 (freight cost not included). So you guys may considering ordering from Japan, if you cannot find the set in HK. Pic of the brown-covered set:  |

| [#2841] Rubinstein Chopin My favorite Nocturnes is Arrau's set (r. 1977-78) in Philips (PHCP-24046-7, Japan 1995), which I bought seven years ago at $300. Arrau's Chopin is quite charming and noble in every way. He may be over-elaborate here and there, but never unrestraint, and he is always in good taste. He has a strong mind but a decidedly romantic voice in his interpretations. The piano sound of this 24-bit version is supreme and never ceases to caress one’s ears, and heart, most lovingly. Rubinstein remains the voice of dear Chopin, but until the XRCD24 version of his Chopin's 2nd and 3rd sonatas was out two years ago (JM-XR24008), he has not been as adequately served by his recording company as Arrau has been. |
