[#2856] Rubinstein Chopin Hi Ocean, the Kempff's set of Beethoven 1-4 piano concertos you have just bought is, I guess, the BPO / Leitner one. I have not listened to any of them before and should be delighted to hear your response. I have, however, listened to Kempff's earlier mono set on DG's Dokumente -- Paul van Kempen conducting the BPO. It was a number of years ago, but I remember that the slow moments of Nos. 3 & 4 are quite touching, while outer momments are full of energy. The overall sound (r.1953 I think) is not bad at all.

[#2860] Rubinstein Chopin I listened non-stop to three different CDs yesterday morning, all featuring Chopin's Sonatas Nos. 2 & 3: (1) Rubinstein (r.1961; BMG-JVC xrcd24; Japan): there is a well-favoured and lyrical flow that is almost inevitable – without doubt the hallmark of a keyboard giant. In No. 2, the sound is big yet quite noiseless, thanks perhaps to the advanced format and the K2 technology. However, a fair amount of finer details are hidden in the glamorous yet larger than life sound. It's in No. 3 (which was recorded a few days earlier) that has the greater sonic wonder on offer. While the playing is powerful and exciting, there is a thrilling and firm sound to match. I have neither RCA's US nor Japanese editions, so I can't tell whether this xrcd24 with supposedly improved sound is worthy of the extra money. (2) Pollini (r.1985; DG 415 346; West Germany): Pollini in the 1980s is a pianist I admire vastly. Here we have another elegant, polished, and sophisticated performance by the Italian in his prime, whose pianism at that stage of his career cannot be faulted. All the way his immaculate technique and polyphonic transparency keep you in intimate encounter with Chopin. Like Rubinstein, his rendition carries a lot of authority. The sound-picture here is more convincing and very attractive indeed -- truly audiophile quality. To me, this is one of Pollini's two finest sounding CDs, the other being Liszt's sonata (r.1988). They are both sumptuously realistic. (3) Uchida (r.1987; Philips PHCP-10522; Japan): An inner rigour is unmistakably in evidence. The whole piece is most exquisitely presented. Her "Marche funebre" is slightly longer than Rubinstein's, with extra messages that may not be "facts" of the piece, but how stylish they sound and thus any criticism is instantly silenced. One simply doesn't mind. Beauty is truth, and truth beautiful. Her extravagant feelings may not be profound stuff, but how enchanting they are: sorrowful yet beautiful. Profundity is what we will come to realize a decade later in Miss Uchida's Schubert final sonata. Over the years she invariably obtains helpful support from the Philips engineers (Pollini on DG has not been so fortunate, in particular his recent releases), and the sound in this issue is no exception. All in all this is a fascinating account I would love to re-visit, if not too frequently, at least once a year. In an ideal world, I would wish to go on listening to as many opp. 35 and 58 as possible. But I don’t have that much time at my disposal, and much less financial means to support this luxury. Nevertheless, I intend to spend sometime with those which are mine one by one: No. 2, op. 35: -- Godowsky (r.1930; EMI) Rachmaninoff (r.1939; RCA) Francois (r.1956; EMI) Janis (r.1956; RCA) Gilels (r.1961; BMG) No. 3, op. 58: -- Lipatti (r.1947; EMI) Neuhaus (r. 1949; Denon) Kapell (r.1951-52; RCA) Argerich (r.1967; DG) Freire (r. 1968; Sony) Gilels (r.1978; BMG) Cherkassky (r.1985; Decca) I hope to be able to report my comments to you all by installments before long. Obvious by their absence in my collection include Perahia, Pletnev, Pogorelich, Ashkenazy, Andsnes, Kissin, Perlemuter, Arrau, and Cortot. Friends in review33 are warmly welcome to share with me their listening experience with these or other versions.

[#2864] Rubinstein Chopin About Mozart's Requiem Mass, I hold this one dear: Edith Mathis, Julia Hamari et al. / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra / Karl Bohm (DG 413 553-2). At once sublime and beautiful -- a profound performance.

[#2869] Rubinstein Chopin Hi erictang, I also have the Schreier one you listed. It's in the Complete Mozart Edition Vol.19 Disc 9. I have neither Karajan's nor Gardiner's. Apart from Bohm's, I have these: Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus / Carlo Maria Giulini [r.1989] Sony SK 45577 The Academic State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR / Yehudi Menuhin [r.1989] Dreamlife DLVC-1053: 2001 (DVD) Menuhin's fails to impress me. I will have to listen to both Giulini and Schreier again to refresh my impression. But it can be quite sure that none of them could be anywhere near the status of the Bohm's, esp. in the "Lacrimosa".

[#2872] Robert Casadesus - Chopin I heard a Robert Casadesus CD at my friend's home which is a live recording of "Chopin Sonatas" It's attractive that he got special tempo. I want to find it but I can't. Anyone can help? It is from Sony. The cover is blue and there is a photo at the left corner that Robert is playing piano in the music hall.

[#2873] Robert Casadesus - Chopin Very probably a French Sony production. I remember having seen a number of newly re-released Casadesus CDs in the Lafayette department store in Paris two years ago when they were just out. Try HK Records, perhaps.

Thank you again. By the way, can you or any big brothers can recommend any good CELLIST OR GOOD RECORDING CELLO CD? |
