[#2897] Mahler, Mozart, Casedesus etc Just listen to Paganini Caprices No.1 of the following 4; and below is my preference: Rabin - EMI Perlman - EMI Accardo - DGG Midori - Sony Rabin's playing is clean and clear, the melodic line is in a good shape. Perlman's playing is fast and fierce

[#2898] Mahler, Mozart, Casedesus etc Dear all Casadesus is indeed underrated locally and also in alot of places except France where he is still highly regarded! I love his playing and I agree with Doctorjohn regarding his Mozart and Duos with wife Gaby and son Jean. Indeed alot of his music could be had from previous essential classics from Sony ( probably rare nowadays) For a single CD that seems to be available locally, I would suggest a live recording of Mozart concertos with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of 2 great and also highly underrated conductors, Mitropoulos and Schuricht- On Orfeo label. Other live recordings could be had from Cascavelle/Melodram/Music-and-Arts but they are more difficult to come by. For Mahler, that is difficult, but if you don't mind poor recording quality, I would vote for Dimitri Mitropoulos ( Music-and-Arts) any day. If you like Mahler that is more in the romatic tradition, I would vote for Bernstein or Tennstedt If you like Mahler from the contemporary/20th century viennese viewpoint, I would not hessitate to recommend Michael Gielen( again another highly underated living conductor) from Hanssler classics( also dead cheap) or Boulez... or Chailly.... Cheers

[#2899] de Waart Edo de Waart's fans should be interested in this: "The 21st Century Orchestra: Navigation Cultural and Musical Landscapes" Wednesday, 2 February 2005, 6pm Rayson Huang Theatre University of Hong Kong Pokfulam, Hong Kong Free admissions by Maestro Edo de Waart Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra Edo de Waart assumed the post of Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra at the beginning of the 2004/05 Season, and brings with him a reputation as an "orchestral builder" who has the enviable ability to transform his orchestras into world-class ensembles. Born in Amsterdam and groomed in New York, Maestro de Waart has previously been appointed Chief Conductor of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, the Netherlands Opera, and Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony. Past appointments have also included the Music Directorships of the Rotterdam Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony and Minnesota Orchestra. During his ten years in Sydney, Maestro de Waart conducted many highly successful projects, including concert performances of Wagner's Ring Cycle, culminating in performances of Gotterdammerung as part of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Arts Festival. He also conducted the Sydney Symphony at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games. Edo de Waart has enjoyed enormous success conducting a large and varied repertoire in many of the greatest opera houses of the world, such as Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera and Bayreuth. He also appears regularly as Guest conductor with all leading symphony orchestras in Europe and the United States. His extensive recording catalogue encompasses recordings with the Royal Concertgebouw, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic (with whom he has recorded a Mahler cycle), Sydney Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota and London Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Netherlands Wind Ensemble.

[#2900] Casadesus please Now that Casadesus's Sony CDs are not widely available locally, may I then recommend Volume 16 of Philips's “Great Pianists of the 20th Century” (456 738-2)? Included in this 2-CD set are four pieces by Rameau (r.1952), Bach's French Suite No.6 (r.1951), six sonatas by Scarlatti (r.1952), Beethoven's Sonata No.2 (r.1952), Debussy's En blanc et noir for 2 pianos (r.1963), Faure's piano duet Dolly op.56 (r.1959), three preludes (r.1961), one nocturne (r.1951), one barcarolle (r.1951), and an impromptu (r.1951). The final selection is Ravel's "Left Hand" concerto (r.1947). We are lucky for the inclusion of the Debussy and the Faure, for the partnership of Casadesus with his wife Gaby (1901-1999) is hailed as one of the most beloved duo piano partnerships of all time. Their son Jean (1927-1972) would join the team later. Philadelphia Orchestra and Ormandy joined the pianist in the Ravel. Anyone new to Casadesus's virtuosity may wish to start with his Mozart piano concertos with George Szell conducting. They have received universal critical acclaim, not least from our learned friends doctocjohn and jonyung in this platform. Apart from the ubiquitous CD guides and reviews, see also Fred Plotkin's "Classical Music Unbuttoned" (London: Aurum, 2003), p.309.

[#2901] Edo de Waart's talk at HKU - tomorrow The title of de Waart's talk should read: "The 21st Century Orchestra: Navigating Cultural and Musical Landscapes" I have been misled by HKU's webpage. A few minutes ago I brought this typo error to the notice of the staff at the Music Department office.

[#2908] my new thread Thanks guys, I have watched 2 Carmen films. one is a modernized Carmen a group of dancers starting to arrange the Carmen opera, the actor loved the actress and finally kill her, repeat the Carmen story. Modern dress and clasic gypsy dance. Very good. Another one is Domingo's film, just a traditional version. I like the former.

[#2909] Rubinstein Chopin Hi DL, I just bought the Rubinstein Chopin set in HMV Japan. Cost including shipping is around HK$450. Arrived in 4 days through FedEx. A lot of disc holders fall off (probably because of age). Other than this, everything is in perfect shape and completely new. Many thanks for your valuable information. The only set I can find in HK is at HK Records, Admiralty, cost around HK$9xx! Now spinning CD 1 on my lo-fi. Top class performance. Regards, John ![]()

[#2911] Sinopoli's Mahler Finished listening to Sinopoli's Mahler box-set around 2 weeks ago. Sinopoli's Mahler Symphonies are lyrical rather than dramatic or passionate. I bet it may be due to his strength in conducting opera. To me, his Mahler song cycles in the box-set are better than the symphonies. Started listening to Solti's Mahler box-set and just finished Mahler 3. I may post some short comments later....
