Don't worry, I am not angry. Just don't understand those 'DDDD'. I won't use 勁 to describe the piano playback. The texture of the piano is second to none, U could feel the vibration of hitting the pedals and the force of the pianist. There is also a sense of elegancy, some might regard this as a kind of coloration. So far I haven't got this kind of feeling from any spks in the market may be Eventus, Stienway & Son/Lyndoff system, Magico, MBL, Piega.... My other favourite JMR definetly could not but still a very outstanding speaker. Recently borrowed a pair of Offrande from a neighbour, the mid range is really attractive. Anyway, I'm only a kindergarten level listener mostly listen to Baroque music and recently favours Chopin's piano music partly due to my Bosendorfer. This thread is really informative providing lots of insight on classical music. ![]()

II Myers: Another surprise candidate for piano playback is JBL (referring to vintage). For my ears, nothing comes close to a well-tuned old JBL monitor in faithful reproduction of piano. The good news is that no expensive elctronics is needed either.

Although I like the CSO sound (especially their immaculate brass section) laid down by Solti, his reading on bruckner simply lacks of purpose but full of fury and excitement, absolutely not my cup of tea. For bruckner symphonies, most music critics recommend maestros either Gunter Wand or Herbert Von Karajan, yet Sergiu Celibidache is a maestro whom we brucknerian should not miss! Celibidache was a partly genius, a partly religious thinker (well-versed of Zen and oriental buddhism) and partly crank (reluctance of canned music), his spiritual, quasi-scientific and musical ideas shape his unique artistic conception "epiphenomena" that each note need to sound, resonate and return - "the richer the music, the slower the tempo." His obesession with slowness, live concert and temporal space helps to conjure one of the greatest Bruckner Fourth performance ever recorded, his account of Bruckner fourth symphony, a truly towering act of recreative immagination, his initial tempos are quite sprightly, he drops down many more undercurrent portray than most bruckner conductors in details, he gives us a sequence of slow movements within the symphonic continuum, the slow movement reflects how he accomplishes his artistic conception and the universe infinity of Bruckner music, Munich Philharmonic Orchestra also displays their ensemble-like precision and first-rate brass playing, the recordings have weight, warmth and immediacy with sufficient air around instruments to avoid a sense of actual claustrophobia. Celibidache's Tchaikovsky fifth and sixth are also highly recommended by virtue of its steady tempo, soulful reading and good command of climax, a disc indispensable in a music library for either music lover or audiophile!! BBC music magazine did select his Tchakovsky's readings as a measurement against other account! George ![]()

II Listened to the recently acquired Prokovfiev piano concerto 1 by Michel Beroff and Masur/Leipzig Orch. The concerto was written by the young Prokovfiev with the intention of prize winning. A relative short work of unique character, allowing the pianist to show off his technique. A fun to listen to Beroff's playing. He is in splendid form and the support from Masur is no less entertaining. However, the recording sound is not exceptional.

[#2875] Dvorak Hi Friends, I am not familiar with Dvorak. I have listened to very few of his works and they always sound pleasing to ears but can be boring in short time. On the whole, there seems to be lack of depth for the ones I listened to. (Of coz, I know nothing about what to listen to - to be honest.) Can friends here recommend a few cds for me to get into the door or Dvorak? Thanks in advance. Cheers.

[#2877] Dvorak DJ, Thanks for the recommendation. I have this piece. Among the limited works I tried out, I only like his cello concerto.... I should be missing out on a big chunk. Cheers.

x 2 Jochum's reading tend to be more monumental and majestic, the brass lack of grain and glare sounding as if an organ sings in the cathedral. His climax and intermediary coda are shaped wonderfully, an account as you said is the most secure reading! George

[#2881] Dvorak DJ EMI just reissued Mariss Janson's Dvorak Symphony in a trio-like Compilation at HK$99, available now in pro-sound (with 10% off discount much cheaper!) Also his reading of Rachmaninov Symphonies (colloborating with St Peterburg Orchestra) are highly recommended, same at HK$ 99 for 1-3 symphonies and other orchestral works! ![]()

Thank for your picture! :) Your Bohm's CD seems to be a genuine western-german made CD, so precious and gorgeous cover! I only have a SACD version issued by Decca Japan instead, what a pity that Bohm adopts Nowak rearrangment (short of abusive passage cutting and overwhelming tempo revision) instead of Haas edition, if you want to listen what the composer actually intent to convey, haas edition seem to be more appropriate and authentic, Gunter Wand's account with BPO in 1996 live recording seem to be a "must" in collection of music lover! The most recent edition of Bohm's Brukner 4th is this Decca Originals, on sale at $6x A good start for bruckner. Excellent performance and recording. It's said the sound is "vastly" improved over your original CD version. It'd be nice to compare one day. ![]() |

[#2887] Bruckner recording I think Vienna philharmonic is the best orchestra for Bruckner's music, their gorgeous sting, golden brass and their long performing tradition make Vienna philharmonic the first choice for performing Bruckner's music, I cannot forget Karajan's performance in Bruckner 8. ![]()
