[#2911] Bruckner recording I agree if you want only to have ONE recording of Bruckner 8, you would want to have the Karajan recording. Beyonod the so called Karajan sound, this interpretation has the inner depth and considered many as one of the recordings of the century. On the other hand Celibidache always gives you something different, in many cases through variation of intensity and super slow tempo. If you need a different intepretation, it will great. I also find the box set from EMI by Jochum to be great bargain if you want one set of Bruckner. On the more modern recording, I also find the set from Chailly to be excellent. I especially like his 7th.

[#2913] Bruckner recording May I list out some of the additional Bruckner listening list??? For very causal listener, go for EMI/SD/Jochum Boxset for $200, the best per dollar you can buy. Naxos's Tintner is most regarded modern cycle for me, in scholar's way to revisit bruckner symphonic composition, but also very recommended interpretation and enjoyment. His cycle also recorded Symphony No. 00 and 0, plus some aborted movement of Bruckner No.3 and No.4, and use of most original edition as possible, without contamination of heavily edited version and reconstructed No.9 Finale. Celibidache musical philosophy is very much matched with Bruckner music, for absolute purity and beauty in structure and harmony, and he share one common things with Gunter Wand, he dislike Bruckner No. 1&2 and never recorded Mahler music (Wand recorded Bruckner No.1 and 2 with Kolner then never record them again.) For Wand, now this BPO cycle (No.4 to 5, then 7 to 9, he supposed to perform and record No.6 with BPO before his death, maybe No.3 will close his cycle with BPO as Wand's won't record No.1 and 2) were focus of Wand's Bruckner in RCA, No.4 with BPO is unusual highly intensified performance, unbelievable for a over 80 years conductor. But I'm not going to talk about the BPO cycle, but this special occasion to made this recording live in the catherdral church of Lebeck, at 1987(No.8) and 1988(No.9) Holstein Music Festival, under this atmosphere, both player, conductor, music itself and the audition getting much closer to bruckner's view of live and death, heaven and hell. ABSOLUTELY must have Bruckner's from Wand!!! It's quite hard to get, I have US version of No.9, and two japanese version of No.8&9 in 2CD (BMG 2 for 1 series and later 24/96 Gunter Wand Edition by Japan BMG), I think only 24/96 Gunter Wand edition still able to purchase in market. Bruckner No.5 is my other favourite, it's not everyone cup of time, I can be too heavy, too bulky to performance, I can't imagine if Karajan use his Karajan Sound to perform this symphony. The most best balance and flow for No.5, my vote goes Wand/BPO performance. and hope all of you enjoy the meeting today.

[#2916] Bruckner recording dj: The photo shown is new version from Gunter Wand Edition released after his death, there are other BMG JVC 2 for 1 series for other RCA artists around 10 years ago, the cover is very simple. mainly in pale green, blue and red, with a small artist photo on cover. I start my Bruckner with Takashi Asahina with Osaka PO, make a brief introduction for the best bit of Bruckner No.1 to 9, then I found Bruckner probably the symphonies I can enjoy for my whole life! ![]()

[#2923] Schubert Fantasy in C We all went to the HKPO Sibelius concert the other day. Some bought this CD for $100. :-((( I bought this at Pro Sound for 1/2 the price. And it surprised me. As you know, I'm not a great fan of Hagner, but her playing here with sister Nicole Hagner is excellent, full of youthful fire. I particularly like their rendition of Schubert's Fantasy in C, urgent, youthful, utterly involving! Track 7 is magical.

[#2924] Schubert Fantasy in C Tonight, after kh33 played the Mozart of Goldberg/Lupu, I decided to compare the performance of the Schubert. There's no question that the playing of the very old Goldberg and Lupu has more "finesse". HOWEVER, I think the Hagner sisters brought out a LOT more the youthful fire of Schubert. I prefer the Hagner sisters. They eat fire, and are not as refined sometimes, but their spirit is fantastic. minpin should like that! Praise for young artists! :-) This set is a must for fans of chamber music, now $6x ! Heifetz recorded this too, but he can be dismissed in this repertoire. ![]()

[#2927] What are you listening to? (classical music Christina England's "Be Still, My Soul" is highly recommended for the hymn-lovers. My favourite track is "Ave Maria" - not only is her voice warm, light and consistent at the same time, but the orchestral arrangement is also superb. I can listen to it repeatedly many times without getting bored. :D ![]()
