| [#2962] To Ocean thanks kkff, I actually dont have any preference of Haydn's Piano Sonatas. Recently, I listened to The last Recording of Horowitz (Sony) in which he played a Haydn Piano Sonata. Thus, I ask if there is any friends here interested in Haydn's piano works. |

| [#2967] Bach violin sonata & partita I agree Szeryng's playing is very good. Eg Suite No.1 2nd movement, the fugue line is very clearly played. That is better than Milstein's (DGG) recording. I don't have Milstein's EMI recording. |

| [#2968] Shostakovich Cello Concerto The Shostakovich Cello Concerto below is very good (played by Schiff/M. shostakovich). I perfer it over Yo-yo Ma/Ormandy where Ma's playing is a bit too sweet and smooth. But the other piece (Kabalevsky Concerto) on Ma's record is very nice and is my favorite.  |

| [#2975] Andsnes's Haydn I have been following Leif Ove Andsnes's career since his Virgin days in the early 1990s. His Virgin Classics release of piano concertos by Grieg and Liszt (1990) made his presence felt in the musical scene, and he never looked back. My initiation was completed when I bought his 1993 Virgin CD of Grieg's music (sonata, Lyric Pieces, etc). It never ceases to give me enormous pleasure. His pianism has matured tremendously since the mid-nineties, and since 1997 when he became an exclusive EMI artist he has been generally better recorded as well. His Haydn sonatas are superb ("rosetted" by the 1999 edition of the Penguin Guide) in every way and will surely serve to recruit more admirers of the Austrian's solo piano music. A good introductory disc to Andsnes's art is perhaps EMI's 2-for-the-price-of-1 set entitled "Leif Ove Andsnes: A Portrait". Your greatest reward in this modest investment will be the discovery that the Norwegian's Haydn piano concerto is even finer. I have yet to find Haydn's piano concerto better played, and better recorded throughout. I am looking forward to the early completion of his voyage of Schubert's cycle -- he has done only three so far. He does not seem to be in a hurry to complete it, or should he? He is only 34. BTW, has anyone here listened to Simon Rattle's live recording of Mahler's eighth with the CBSO? With this release Rattle completes his Mahler cycle. My apologies for imposing on your virtual reality for so long. Isn't it a bit odd to talk about music when we should be listening to it at this hour when the night is still tender? "Music is that which cannot be said", as Victor Hugo puts it; oh well, he continues to observe, "but which it is impossible to be silent." |
