| [#2997] Things I like. Hi Tanuski (and All), Of the four CDs whose photos you have posted inviting comments, I only have the Mahler Seventh. Mine is the 1987 first CD edition (60CO-1553-54-EX); yours, I think, is the “Crest 1000” series released in 2002 (COCO-70402). During the past 14 years, I have listened to this set for about four or five times, the only other version of Mahler Seventh I have listened to is Ozawa conducting the Boston Symphony Orchestra (Philips). While Ozawa's offers more drama, Inbal's presents more jewels: clean, firm, and refined. There is, however, a subtle intensity throughout, and certainly he can be powerful when power is called for. Inbal has remained a conductor who interests me very much. I find this Jewish conductor in top form in the Mahler Fourth (1985) and Tchaikovsky Fifith (1989). I also have his Symphonie Fantastique (1987), but haven't found the time to listen to it yet. All of the above accounts are with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. If you want Inbal with a more stellar line-up, try this: Beethoven's Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello in C, op. 56, with Claudio Arrau, Henryk Szeryng, János Starker, and the New Philharmonia Orchestra [r. 1970], released by Philips (1998) in Arrau's 14-CD Beethoven set. The other three CDs of yours are strangers to me, but they seem to promise great interest. I wonder how you feel about them. |

| [#3002] Thank you for the music I missed this Haydn Cello Concerto CD. A few years ago, it is on sales at TST HMV at $30 or $40; thinking of already having it, I have not bought it that day. Many years ago, HK Phil was once under the baton of Muhai Tang (Beethoven Sym 6 if I remember correctly), the playing is so good that I feel HK Phil is becoming another orchestra. |

I will take your advice and keep an eye on the Inbal's recording next time I visit the library. Oh, especially the Beethoven's Triple Concerto for Piano, Violin, and Cello in C, op. 56. It sounds like a winner. About the Jian Wang CD that was posted earlier, the facial expression reminds me of the trend that Yo-Yo Ma started. Musicians must show orgasm while playing their instruments. I saw other young Chinese male musician following, having similar soft-porn look in their advertisements. A few years back in Carnegie Hall, I watched Ozawa Seiji conducting Boston Sym. He was totally over reacting, over performing, over simplifying human emotion to sheer gestures. He turned himself into is a clown, a music joker. It is sad to evidence Asian artists have to go the extra mile to appease the Western audience. May be that is why I see Uchida Mitsuko differently. A lot of people find her strange. She walks straight to the stage, pays attention to nothing and plays her heart out. I like Kyung Wha Chung in similar manner. She also delivers with confidence and pride. My apology for being carried away. ______________________________ |
