[#2970] What are you listening to? (classical musi Keep this LP for over 20 yrs, still don't know what it is all about. I don't understand the words (German?)too. My limited knowledge about this composer is his famous "Pictures at an Exhibition". ![]()

[#2975] What are you listening to? (classical musi This is a very memorable CD a concert to celebrate the fall down of the Berlin Wall. A very special event for the world in early 1990.

[#2976] What are you listening to?

| [#2977] What are you listening to? (classical musi 邊個邊個& chowhwk Morning Gentlemen! Agreed that Bernstein's account (1990) is irreplacable and infinite, though the orchestra itself consisted of members from LSO, NYPO, MPO, Leningrad PO, Statkapelle Dresden, Bernstein squeezed these elite members to their utmost with joyful and glowing element, still remeber this CD because it incorporates a little rock sample of Berlin Wall, I still cherish it very much as a testament of historical moment, a moment when freedom and liberation were in the heydays! | [#2978] What are you listening to? (classical musi The Berstein Beethoven 9 has great significance in history. When it was first launched, each cd came with a piece of Berlin Wall debris. Just for that idea, it is nice to own a copy. ^^ In terms of the interpretation, Berstein was still not at the level with Furtwangler thou. For modern conductors, I really like Abbado's first S#9 recording (great influence by Furtwangler I supposed). |

[#2979] What are you listening to? (classical musi The fall of the Berlin wall, Bernstein's passion plus an extended orchestra make this a special disk. It is not as polished as karajan, but you can feel the joy of peace from listening to this.

[#2981] Bernstein Difficult to buy single disc now. This is part of Bernstein's second cycle. Might as well buy the newly released budget set for 7,8,9. Bernstein's number 9 is classic Bernstein's Mahler, passionate and driving the orchestra to perform the best.

[#2982] Bernstein I am also finding this rare and costly album, as a Bernstein Fans, this account is a live concert dedicated to fund-raising of Amnesty International and subsequently Karajan was driven to record this Mahler Ninth after hearing this concert of Bernstein with BPO,therefore Karajan spent extra time and effort to play Mahler Ninth in early 1980's!

[#2984] What are you listening to? (classical musi Last night, listened to a fresh and innovative account of Diabelli variation by Piotr Anderszewski. Diabelli commisioned different composer at that time to write variation for the theme he provided, in hoping that he can compile a set of variation for 30 or 40 different composer. Beethoven think that he is superior to other composer and insist to write 33 in total. The variation span a long period and can represent Beethoven proficiency in writing Fugue. The booklet said Piotr Anderszewski's playing Diabelli variation have the same sense of discovery as Gould's Golberg variation, I tend to `partly' agree. I already have Kovacevich and Brendel's account on my shelf. Piotr Anderszewski playing was fresh and playful, but he did not have the ground breaking quality of Gould's Goldberg variation, at least Kovacevich and Brendel do not sound inferior when compare with Piotr Anderszewski. Recording however was demonstration quality. ![]()

[#2986] What are you listening to? (classical musi Mahler 9 was indeed a great symphony, so far I have not heard of a bad intepretation, only different intepretation. I the past, Bernstein recording was very expansive, especially for a me as a student at that time, probably I should invest in a Bernstein Mahler cycel now. Apart from Bernstein and Karajan, Barbirolli's account was gentle and elegant, Haitink's account was objective and was hailed as the definitive account by Derek Cooke ( the composer and scholar who write complete version of Mahler's ten base on fragment). Another version I really love was by Bertini, his version can bring you to enternity by his 28 minutes long fourth movement, by far the longest I have heard of and yet Bertini strong sense of melody line hook me up till the end. ![]()

[#2987] What are you listening to? (classical musi For M9, Bruno Walter's version is also worth checking out. Earlier one should be with Vienna and a later one with CBS if I am not wrong.

[#2988] What are you listening to? (classical musi Giulini's account of playing Mahler Ninth with CSO was also unforgettable with slower pace and melodic moment, it attributes to Giulini's latin-seasoned treatment (with lots of legato and rubato as if an Italian tragic opera was played) and the gorgeous brass section of CSO, it combines the qualities of Walter's warmth and Bernstein's hysteria. Highly recommended! George ![]()

[#2989] What are you listening to? (classical musi Bruno Walter's version is also worth checking out. Earlier one should be with Vienna __________________________________________________________ BenYC, You are right. It is in fact the 9th first commercial recording conducted by its dedicatee and was called the "swan song" of VPO by then as Austria was taken over by the German few weeks later. As noted in Grammophone, this is music making in which scrappiness and fervour are dissolubly linked. Other great performances of Mahler must be those of Mitropoulos, the most "ungraceful" conductor ever. ![]()
