| [#3077] Re: Triple Concerto trollope, I've got both the Beethoven's Triple Concerto by Oistrakh/Richter/Rostropovich/Karajan (EMI) and the "Richter:The Enigma" DVD. If you remember, there's a short recording of Oistrakh/Richter/Rostropovich/Kondrashin playing Beethoven's Triple Concerto in the DVD (just 1 year after the 3 Slavs made the EMI recording). After I watched the DVD for the first time, I found my EMI CD to compared the same short passage. Oistrakh/Richter/Rostropovich/Kondrashin version in the DVD, though short is much, much better than the Oistrakh/Richter/Rostropovich/Karajan version. It's a pity that Oistrakh/Richter/Rostropovich/Kondrashin version isn't issued in full in any audio format. |

Indeed Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Richter, Oistrakh, Rostropovich as soloists, and with Kondrashin conducting the Moscow Philharmonic (5 January 1970, Main Hall, Moscow Conservatory) has never appeared in its entirety in audio-only format. Only the first movement has been made available, twice, by EMI: Toshiba-EMI TOCE; and also as part of the 13-CD set "Rostropovich: The Russian Years". Let's hope that EMI will soon be so kind as to re-release in DVD format this recording in full which has previously appeared in both LD and VHS formats, entitled "David Oistrakh - Archival Treasures". It's in Volume 2: 4 91301-1 (LP) or 4 91301-3 (VHS). Meanwhile, if waiting for that is a torture, one may consider this rather expensive issue from Japan: Dreamlife DLCV-1112 "Concerto Complete -- David Oistrakh", which contains a number of complete violin concertos from Vivaldi to Shostakovich, including the Beethoven Triple Concerto with the above-mentioned dream-cast. But it's an investment too expensive for me. Besides, I have been warned by a friend in the Sviatoslav Richter E-mail Group that the sound is "pretty bad mono". There is a review, in Chinese, in this site: http://www.cnamusic.com/ But it's decidedly one-sided, all pros and no cons, typical of recorded music reviews in Chinese magazines. |

For a long time I was happy with the Karajan version of the Beethoven's Triple Concerto. Now that I found out there are more, I feeeeeeel incomplete when listen to the same CD. As I always believe, knowing less is always merrier! With your input, not only do I need to squeeze time to read the Bruno Monsaingeon book, I have to search for the Kondrashin DVD version that DL recommended! That is a lot of work! Almost a full time job. Well, you better up-front with all the hidden agenda with this Beethoven Triple piece. No more surprise! Let rid of it once and for all. Capeesh? Anyway you guys are great! | [#3093] Klemperer 78 years ago Hi wal, I'm at this moment listening to Otto Klemperer's "Leonora No.3 Overture", a recording he made with the Orchester der Staatsoper Berlin in 1927. People tend to think Klemperer's approach austere and "objective", while the opposite camp include Furtwangler and Walter et al who are held to be warm and "subjective". But I find Klemperer's Beethoven and Mahler not at all lacking in affection and human kindness. The intensity is unmistakably present, but equally present is an eagerness that makes you feel yourself warming to the composer. One of my favourite recordings of his is the Mahler's Second. Everything seems right: Elisabeth Schwarzkopt, the Philharmonia, Kingsway Hall, Walter Legge ... |

I have to say and happily receive OK’s approach to the great Viennese/ German pieces (Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, Mahler & Wagner – though his Bach/ Handel can be controversial): in his slow tempo the details and grandeur of the music is so eagerly (to borrow your word) and truthfully revealed. Walter is also very capable but some of his later Columbia recordings of the Beethoven symphonies are not too satisfying. I think Furtwangler does his best with Brahms and Schubert symphonies (and perhaps 1 or 2 versions of Beethoven’s 9th, too), as well as German operas. It is sad that BW didn’t had the energy to make operas for stereo recordings – but his Met Fidelio with Flagstad (+ the Furtwangler version with Patzak) is just powerful. And with OK’s Testament recording of the opera, these 3 are indeed THE references. Btw, both OK and BW are a must for Mahler – symphonies nos. 2 & 4! Cheers. |
