[#3096] Klemperer 78 years ago Klemperer was one of my favourite conductor too. His force and pounding energy are unmatched by other conductors. Furtwangler's conducting is energetic and full of thunder, but Klemperer's and Furtwangler's way of delivery are different. My favourite of Klemperer recording is also his Mahler 2 (EMI). I like Kathleen Battle too. Her voice is very pure. I starts to know her when she sang in one of Karajan's recording (below). I still remember that LP, though I don't have the gear to play it anymore..... ![]()

[#3104] Klemperer 78 years ago +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi Classical Kan & DL, I thought everybody is out for Easter. Didn't get the chance to get the Grumiaux's Corelli Violin sonatas yet. May be I will go to Tower Record sometimes next week. On the other hand I am listening to the Klemperer's Mahler 2 (EMI) that DL recommended. Quite impressed with the Andante and the In ruhig fliessender Bewegung. Very different from the Simon Rattle that I am accustomed to. Actually it is a overall superior performance. So how about you? Anything that you are enjoying lately, Classical Kan? PS what happened to Trollope? Is he hiding from us? +++++++++++++++++++++++++ ![]()

[#3105] Klemperer 78 years ago Tanuski, glad that you like Klemperer's Mahler 2. I'm sure that it'll bring you enjoyments for years (just as it has brought to Trollope and me). To all, for the Mozart Coronation Mass (Karajan) that I mentioned, if one wants to try it, please consider other DG release of the same recording. The original release is a recording of the full Mass, and it includes long speech in Latin, and one may not be interested.....

[#3107] Klemperer 78 years ago Hi Classical Kan, DL, Tanuski and trollope, For Mahler No.2 symphony, i like Barbirolli's mono version (on Testament records) too. it is subtle and has a kind of mysterious tension, hm... What do u think ?

[#3108] Barbirolli the great Mahlerian Hi wal, Indeed Sir John's Testament account (SBT2 1320) may well be the next Mahler Second I will invest in, as I have been the owner of his Mahler Ninth with the same orchestra (BPO) since 1990, while in the same year I also bought his Mahler Fifth with the New Philharmonia Orchestra. They are both eminently recommendable -- warm, vast, and polished -- and convince me that this is the voice of Mahler produced when greatness is attained. These EMI recordings are now available in the "Great Recordings of the Century" series. I have not bought the Testament yet mainly because I am worried about the mono sound of this radio recording, despite all the nice things the latest edition of the Penguin Guide has said about it. (p.227) Now that someone among us is an owner, will he be so kind as to comment on the recorded sound of this 2-CD set?

[#3111] Barbirolli the great Mahlerian Hi trollope, as to the sound quality of the recording of Sir John's Mahler No.2 on Testament, i would say it is highly satisfactory without any constant 'si...' or cracks at all. It's just that it is in mono and indeed worth being in your collection. : ] btw, i have big trouble in getting: Luigi Alva-Classic recitals on Decca 475 6410 2 DM Any brothers got some ideas as to where i could get one ?? thanks.

[#3113] Senor Alva Many thanks, wal. Luigi Alva's Decca Classic Recitals disc "Ay-Ay-Ay" is a new release. Perhaps you will have to wait for a short while before it's available. Is this disc of Spanish and Latin American songs any good? My encounter with Senor Alva is limited to the Don Giovanni (Giulini on EMI), a performance I think we all enjoy. He is a marvelous Don Ottavio.
