The performance is very good. Nice, warm and human. Rather romantic, I should say. And the price is a lot better than the Amazon.com. Have been listening to them all day. | [#3142] The Stokowski sound Hi DL and All, I have been an owner of "Leopold Stokowski Decca Recordings 1965-1972" (Decca "Original Masters" 5 CD-set) for a day. As we have come to expect from this musician / magician, the sound he produces is sumptuous and intensely deluxe, thanks much to Decca's "Phase 4" system using close microphone and a twenty-channel mixer. I am particularly interested in his Elgar's Enigma Variations, a first CD release here. The ninth variation, the famous "Nimrod", is a revelation. Stokowski must have manipulated Elgar somewhere to make the music instantly accessible. But one doesn't mind. Andrew Litton's somewhat standard version takes 3'49, and here Stokowski takes slightly more than four minutes, which is hardly wayward. Talking about waywardness, do you know how long did Bernstein with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1982 take to finish this adagio? Six minutes and ten seconds! And perversely I find him make sense too. The second piece of music I have dipped into is the Tchaikovsky Fifth. The solo horn of Alan Civil in the second movement promises to be something special. He is such a delight in Mozart's Horn Concertos (ASMF, Marriner), and this meeting with Stokowski and the New Philharmonia Orchestra turns out to be quite simply irresistible. All in all, I find one gem after another, and yet another, in these five CDs. One should certainly be warned that the hi-fi-effect-oriented Stokowski stamps his identity everywhere. Stokowski's finger-prints are over all Bach, Rachmaninov, Franck, Berlioz, Ravel et al we meet. When the original music is sweet enough (eg. Schubert's Moment musical No.3), he will add some MSG in his orchestral transcriptions; and where there is tension (eg. Firebird), he drops a few more bombs, spot-on, creating a breathtaking performance as idiosyncratic as it is charismatic. We cease to be bothered about what the original scores say and simply allow ourselves to be charmed by the conductor's creative dynamic power. I suspect the main reason few people mind about it is that he makes everything sound so spontaneous, and that isn't easy at all. Friends interested in this musician are advised to take notice also of a handful of Japanese "Decca Best Plus 50" issues (Four Seasons etc), and of course various RCA CDs. In EMI's 2-CD set series of "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" series, there is a late Stokowski account of the Sibelius First (r.1976) which should be of great interest. What about Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra? In his attempt to re-create the brand of "Stokowski Sound", Kunzel, despite his evidently more modern sound in the mid-1980s, is contrived and lacking in spontaneity (Telarc CD-80129). Stokowski remains 不可無一 不可有二. |

Those re-issue CDs are just look like the Old CDs, however, you may distinguish the new CDs from the Old by looking at the words in the inner ring. The old CDs have words like "Made in W.Germany" or "Made in W.Germany by PDO". |

I really want to buy that "Original Masters" set, but I notice the price of the classical box sets is back to original now. So maybe later la.... Rather, I bought a handful of RCA SACDs + 1 Mercury SACD yesterday. Reiner's Scheherazade, Piatigorsky's Dvorak Cello Concerto, etc..... ^o^ |
