[#3157] Beethoven piano sonata 昨夜我聽完 Arrau (亞勞)彈 piano sonata no 21(Beethoven)和 "EMPEROR", 好有味.節奏沒有 Gilels 快, 但最可貴的地方是令聽的人有思考空間, 有一種正統的感覺.

[#3161] Mozart / Verdi Requiems Hello All, Do u like these 2 works very much? Which version do u like/ have/ want ? Let's share some experience : ] I like best and have the Mozart conducted by 1) Fricsay (Grummer, Pitzinger, Krebs, Hotter/DG japan - can't get the old 'Dokument' verison!), 2) Walter (Della Cosa, Dermota/Orfeo), 3) Karl Richter (Hertha, van Kesteren/ Teldec), 4) Bohm (Mathis, Hamari, Ochmann, Ridderbusch/ DG) ... and Verdi by: 1) Giulini (Schwarzkopf, Gedda/ EMI) 2) Serafin (Vartenissian,Cossotto, Fernandi, Christoff/ Tesament) 3) Solti (Sutherland, Horne, Pavarotti/ Decca) 4) Sabata (Schwarzkopf, di Stefano/ other label - i can't get the EMI version!!) 5) Karajan (Price, Cossotto, Pavarotti/ DG DVD) ... and i want to get the Mozart by Schuricht (Maria Stader, Marge Hoeffgen, Nicolai Gedda, Otto Wiener/ Archiphone - discontinued due to copyright problems!) & the Verdi by Abbado/ DG waiting for a new re-issue perhaps - cheaper : P Cheers!

[#3167] Mozart / Verdi Requiems Dmitri Shostakovich: Cello Concertos Nos. 1 & 2 by Heinrich Schiff, Dmitry Shostakovich, Maxim Shostakovich. In terms of performance, I think Schiff is more Shostakovich style. But in terms of music, the Kabalevsky in Ma's recording is my very favorite. ![]()

[#3170] Sir Adrian Boult in 1889 I am up to my neck in finishing a huge amount of work today, but this morning I allowed myself the indulgence of listening to Vaughan Williams's "A London Symphony", with Sir Adrian Boult conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra -- a 1971 Kingsway Hall recording (EMI). Later tonight, if I am not fagged out I will most certainly listen to Boult's versions of "The Planets" (1978) and "Enigma Variations" (1970) released by EMI (aptly) in a "Great Recordings of the Century" CD. It was in 1918 that Holst asked Boult to conduct the first performance of "The Planets". The "Enigma", another Boult's warhorse, is a warm and noble reading. I have been told that the adagio in Elgar's Symphony No.1 is especially lovely in Boult's hands -- "heavenly" is the word according to one critic. Unfortunately I don't have this CD (Testament SBT 1229). Sir Adrian (knighted in 1937) died in 1983. Among his publications include two valuable books on the art of conducting (1922, 1963) and an autobiography (1973). The great English conductor was born one hundred and sixteen years ago, today.

[#3173] Sir Adrian Boult in 1889 trollope, I finished listening to all Vaughan Williams Symphonies some months ago. Sir Adrian Boult's conducting of them were great. HiFi Review said that the latest reissue of Haitink recording of Vaughan Williams Symphonies is good too (for experienced guys, they recommend Boult's version for beginners).

[#3174] Shostakovich + Bashmet + Richter Hi trazom, Can we afford to ignore the 1985 live recording (Freiburg, West Germany) of Shostakovich's Viola Sonata, op.147 played by the irresistible Yuri Bashmet and the powerful Sviatoslav Richter? It's a digital recording released by Victor (VICC-2180) in 1997. I bought this Japanese CD more than two years ago at HK$73. If you are tempted by this pair of musicians but find this item unavailable, by all means get hold of their 1982 Moscow recording (also in DDD) of the same piece of music released by the Korean label Yedang (YCC-0166), which should be a lot easier to come by. Good luck. ![]()

[#3175] Kempff's live recording - Schubert #21 I await eagerly the release sometime this month on BBC Legends (BBCL-4169-2) of Wilhelm Kempff's live recording (Oct 1967) of Schubert's greatest sonata, the 21st in B Flat D.960. Fans of this pianist surely hold his studio recording (Jan 1967) on DG dear (mine is the DG Classikon edition). Kempff has a nature tone for Schubert, at once authoritative, ripe without added sugar.

[#3176] Kempff's live recording - Schubert #21 Incidentally I finished the 7-CD Schubert Piano Sonatas DG boxset by Wilhelm Kempff yesterday. Very, very good indeed. Once I started with the 1st CD, I just couldn't stop until I finished with the last one. Very touching and not pretentious at all. Hi trollope, please let us know when the title is released. Thanks! ![]()
