| [#3179] Kempff's live recording - Schubert #21 sonic effect of the Schiff Shostakovich Cello is also very good. Its maybe better than Ma. But Ma's is copuled with Kabalevsky While I find Shostakovich No.2 a bit boring. At the moment, I'm listening Sibelius Violin Concerto, played by Gil Shaham, then the one by Mullova. Anyone knows the Heifetz one? |

| [#3182] Sibelius Violin Concerto Another Sibelius Violin Concerto that I like (may be even more than Heifetz's) is Oistrakh's version. My version is conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky, with Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra (1965, Melodya, made in Japan). Oistrakh has recorded Sibelius Violin Concerto for few times, but I just got the above. Not sure if the other Oistrakh version(s) is even better or not.... |

| [#3184] Any Butterfly vilin Concerto lovers here? trollope: I'm glad you mentioned Boult. Personally I think he's under-rated. His Elgar's are great, though of course the 1st cannot out-run Barbirolli's version overall (also EMI, great sound). I am a sucker for this symphony and find something good in many versions (Solti, Haitink etc) Another unbelievable recording of Boult is the Rachmaninov symphony #3. The depth and quality of the recording, especially the bass drum, is earth shattering. ginger: I like the butterfly. Best is Yu Li Na, an excellent violinist with great taste.  |

Other versions that I got is the one performed by Yu Li-na in the early sixties (Marco Polo HKC-8.008) and one performed by 孔朝暉 (Hugo HRP 738-2). I haven't listened to them seriously......maybe it's time to do it now. |

| [#3188] Kempff's BBC Schubert No. 21 The arrival of this CD has yet to be announced on the BBC Legends official website. Apart from the Schubert No.21, there are Mozart's No.12 and Beethoven's No.28, and a small dose of Brahms as fill-up. Tempted? Kempff's Schubert, hi jttlee, is utterly compelling. There is a wisdom and profundity inside his idiomatic expression that makes it impossible for the listener not to respond to music-making of this calibre. His Schubert set has rightly earned the status of a classics. However, I am not sure that the set has been well served by the DG recording engineers. It's certainly not the best analogue sound: slightly on the dry side without being firm enough. Compare his discs with, for instance, Clifford Curzon's analogue recordings of Nos. 17 and Nos. 21 etc in the two Decca "Classic Sound" CDs, and you will know that Kempff has not been lucky: the clarity of tuttis is often in doubt. Among recording engineers of Schubert's solo piano music, I think Cees Heijkoop stands out. He has got every bit of sound just right in Brendel's (1988) and Uchida's (1997) No.21 sonata. The sound of both of these Philips discs has splendid range and fidelity. Perahia's 2002 Sony recording of No.21 is also a fine one, but perhaps the engineer has strived for too much an amount of attractive bloom, but it is not as bad as Stephen Kovacevich's 1994 EMI account, in which the resonant acoustics effect quite simply nauseates me. The other extreme is Pollini's 1987 recording on DG: way too dry. But what spectacular pianism he possesses, which makes the hard-edged sound a criminal offence. So, that makes the BBC Kempff such an eagerly awaited item for me. BBC has caught him "live" so well in his Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, and Schumann. There is a warmth of expression I fail to find in the DG issues. I expect it to appear later this month.  |

| [#3192] Butterfly Lovers violin concerto Sorry for a bit late.....my other CD is another SACD version played by 孩R拿 (but she's a few recordings for 梁祝). My personal opinion: 孩R拿's version is better than 西崎崇子's version, although the latter made the piece well-known to the world (including western countries). When I first listened to 孩R拿's playing, it's the same as listening to Chinese orchestral music, not western orchestral music (though she's playing western musical instrument - violin). I think it's because 孩R拿 is a Chinese and the orhestra is a Chinese symphony orchestra. (FYI, I'd played in Chinese Orhestra of my secondary school....)
