| [#3197] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to the newly brought Sibelius Symphony No 1&4 by Ashkenazy. The first symphony was a melodious symphony in romantic tradition modelled after Tchaikovsky, while symphony NO.4 was written after Sibelius was diagnosed to have tumor and have the same senseof inevitablility as Mahler's symphony No 9. I cannot say that this set have the best intepretation of Sibelius symphony, but it must be the best in term of sonic. The sound stage was wide and deep, recording was dynamic and trueful, a demonstration disc in every way.  |

| [#3199] What are you listening to? ( classical mus 想聽點 violin. ASM, 昔日卡叔力捧的小姑娘早已成了婦人. 唱片封面很漂亮, 不會懷疑 ASM 是 (曾是?) 靚女一名. 可惜對我而言她這隻貝協是頗為失敗的. 大部份時間她的演出都非常封閉自我, 樂曲的速度強弱起伏節奏都完全墮進了她自我的空間. 而沉溺在此的同時她的控制和琴音似亦未有達到她的最高水準. 我嘗試奈性地想與她的自我空間接軌但終究不能成, 她變得自己在拉她的小提琴, 我甚或樂隊都彷如唱片封面般只隔著車唱望著她. 終於到最後樂章情況稍為好轉但卻為時已晚.  |

| [#3201] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night was mainly Beethoven. First the violin sonata no. 2,6,8, by Francescatti and Casadesus. An intimate playing by two great masters,two old friends, singing and talking to each other. This is music making of the highest caliber,don't analyse and compare,just listen and enjoy. Next was piano concerto no.3 by Richter and Muti directing the Philharmonia Orc. A record I bought more than 20 years ago. It is because of Richter playing that makes this my favourite of all the Beethoven piano concerto. Having listened to this record countless of time and still not getting bored, esp after doing some modification and tweaks to my set-up. I now find Richter's playing ever more convincing. |

This is my copy, bought some 20 years ago in MongKok "Fat Kee" at $32. I like pieces in minor key of the classical era. For example, Mozart Piano Concerto No.20, No.24, Piano sonata in a minor K.331 and Fantasy in d minor K.397 .  |

To my listening, I preceived Casadesus was trying to communicate with Francescatti while Francescatti was quiet enjoying to talk to himself. Anyway, a definitely nice version to listen to. |

( classical mus Another big bargain of EMI inventory sales at HMV Central, a youthful, fresh and glowing rendition of Karajan in 1950's when he started to record for EMI's director Walter Legge with Philharmonia Orchestra, phrasing is airy with bloom and electricity, legato application was not such an extreme extent as his late years, another big bargain at HK$50 for 5CDs, sound quality is modest but I am sure you won't be upset by his undue polishing. George  |

| [#3209] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, start my journey on Bach's cantatas. I can always hear the link between Bach's cantatas and Mahler's symphony no.8, probably Mahler modelled his symphony after the Bach's Cantatas, the music sung by Richter's hand picked choir was pure, majestic and holy. The orchestra playing was remarkable too, I really hope one day I could hear a Bach cantatas performed in one of the major cathedral in Europe.  |
