[#3237] Haydn's Lark
I am sure Tanuski will understand that his recommendation is perhaps a bit difficult to come by and so wouldn't mind my barging in on Haydn's "Lark".

My favorite is the Hagen Quartet on DG (423 622-2), recorded in 1988. To seal a safe recommendation, I listened to their "Lark" a few hours ago and I recommend it enthusiastically. The sound they produce is warm and clear, with a very civilized pace. Wonderful for a Sunday evening in late spring. I confess I have not listened to other "Larks", but I would think the Lindsays on ASV and the Amadeus Quartet on DG are equally noteworthy. The Lindsays discs are rather expensive. About the Amadeus accounts, DG has issued a three-CD set in its "Trio" series (471 762-2). If you want old and famous recording (apart from Tanuski's choice), try the Smetana Quartet on Testament. If budget is a concern, you can't do better than going for the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos. I have three Haydn's String Quartets CDs from them (all 1989 recordings), no "Lark" in any of them though. While their prices are significantly cheaper, their renditions are never proportionally inferior. My only little reservation is that the resonance is sometimes slightly more than we wish it to be.

Tanuski (Hi, "Alienist" still on my reading list) is very lucky to have the Léner String Quartet discs. The legendary Budapest group, named about its first violin Jeno Léner, was active between the two world wars. I don't think we can hope to get these issues locally in HK. But I remember that there is a disc from Testament that features these players with Léon Goossens on the oboe in two works by Mozart (a concerto and a quartet). It is worthy seeking out.

Of Brahms' Piano Quintet, I am sure I am not qualified to say favourably of any discs, as I don't own one.

Hi mouton,
If you like piano and orchestra, you can try the following Chopin piano Concerto No1 & 2. Krystian Zimerman with Garol Maria Giulini and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra

Below is a CD picture. For LP, they are in 2 discs.

[#3240] Haydn's Lark
For violin, paganini violin concert no.1 & Carmen Fantasy.
Itzhak Perlman with Lawrence Foster and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
Although I perfer the DGG Accardo one, especially for 3rd movement. Perlman's playing is a bit caution.

This is coupled with Sarasate's carmen Fantasy
When compare to Mutter, Perlman's playing is less powerful and wild, but the orchestra is accompanying Perlman very well.

Hi Trollope,

Thank you for the recommendation on Hagen Quartet and your sharing, I will try to find it on coming weekend.

For the Brahms Paino Quintet Op.34, I just got the budget buy of $78 (Philips Duo), it includes String Quintet Op.88 & 111, Clainet Quintet Op.115, performers are Members of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet. I bought it because of its cheaper price.

I hope that I will have time to listen it, but frankly speaking, recently my listening area is always occupied by my boss, just because of the Korean soup-opera.

Trollope, Supera and all,

This "book" looks familiar, Trollope? I had it for almost 2 weeks already. Only read 8 pages while waiting for my dentist so far. Too early to have any comment.

When I posted the Lener, I have my own doubt. I do not have much choice but to bring it to you guys attention. Or else such good performance will be totally wiped out forever. A Japanese friend of mine introduced me to the quartet. He is a generation older and a pathetic "classical addict". He told me there are a few more albums by the group in Japan other than the Rockport Records series. I am planning to look into the case next time I jump over Tokyo.

One thing that you hit on the nail, Trollope I have to admit, is that the whole piece was evolving around the violinist (leader of group). I believe that was the common practice/ style back then- a representation of its time. The sound quality was far from perfect and it is mono, of course. All one gets is music.

It is too bad that not many people care about them and it became obsolete. You can find them in Amzon.com but it is going to cost an arm and a leg!

My big project is due by the middle of May. I am forcing myself to concentrate and stay away from Review33, especially the classical music group…. One of the tubes (the 6J5G) in the amplifier has gone south (making popping noise) that needs replacing. It is a sad thing when one gets old. We never have enough time to attend all the details.

[#3244] Alessandro Marcello
Hi Erictang,

Your recommendation of Zimerman / Giulini / LAPO cannot be faulted. It's my top choice for Chopin's non-solo-pinao disc. I have the first CD pressing (415 970-2), and two years ago I bought the Japanese DG version (UCCG-3402) in HMV in Times Square, Shinjuku.

On your enquiry on Marcello, as I have always had a soft spot for the Camerata Bern, the following CD has been my regular diet during the past fourteen years:

Alessandro Marcello: Six Concerti "La Cetra"
Heinz Holliger & Louise Pellerin (oboes) / Camerata Bern / Thomas Füri [r. 1981]
DG (Archiv Produktion-Galleria) 427 137-2: ADD

It's an appealing modern performance which presents great inner detail. I am not sure whether DG has reissued this glorious disc.

Hi Supera and all,
I find 大長金 OK, it is the only soup-opera I watch in these few years. If the story is real, those 'human interrelationship' also applies to Korean hundred years ago; so history repeats again and again.
The other soup-opera I can recall are 精武門 of ATV & one about 潮洲人 (i think it is replaying recently in ATV).

[#3247] Beginning of the end
Dear Tanuski, I am deeply touched. The front cover brings back some fond memories of the days and nights I was in another country, some of which spent in reading this very book and its sequel, Small World. It was years later that I came to the realisation that those days marked the beginning of the end of that precious state of being: my youth.

Hi Trollope,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try looking for it.
About Marcello oboe concerto in D, I have one coupled with vivaldi 'La Folia' and a few other pieces. L'Oiseau-Lyre 4216552.
ORCHESTRA: Academy of Ancient Music
CONDUCTOR: Christopher Hogwood
ARTISTS: Emma Kirkby

I perfer it over my previously beloved Naxos (C.P.E. Bach: Oboe Concertos, Oboe Sonata; A. Marcello: Oboe Concerto ),
by the way, the other solo oboe sonata in the Naxos are also very good.

trollope,

It's my pleasure. I've already forgotton about my posting of Stokowski's discography :P

Actually, I search the web for discography from time to time, to see the CD released for some of my favourite artists. It's enjoyable to know the information and search for collectibles..... ^o^

[#3250] Chamber Music
About chamber music, I only have 1 box-set by Melos Quartet and another set of Beethoven's Trio by Barenboim, Du Pre, and Zukerman. For most of the time, I focus on orchestral music. For chamber music, I just have sonatas.

For quartet, I'm planning to buy box-sets of the legendary Amadeus Quartet. I'm sure the recording will be old and may be not so good, but their performances will sure to worth the price.

I know that their Beethoven's Quartets are famous. Any one has it and can give comments. Other versions are welcome too.

[#3251] Chamber Music
Hi Supera and all fans,

I have some opinion to share on Chamber music as a beginner, Some of them are rather boring at the first encounter, but after serveral tme you will find them very touching (depend on listener's mood) Those can also show the technique and harmony of the performers (esp.on Trio & sonata )

I have some Chamber music of Handel,Mozart, Haydn, Brahms,& Dvorak, those I think are more easy listening.

My sugestion is to Borrow some from Public library first to see your "cup of tea" .

Frederic Pelassy was born in Paris, France, in 1972. He does not belong to a group of violinists who appeal to the audience with their virtuoso techniques or their passions. He is unique in his sensitivity of showing the charm of music and also in his delicacy and clear tone character. http://f.pelassy.free.fr/

His CDs are on "BNL" label and are not available in HK, amazon.com, hmv.co.jp, towerrecords.co.jp

[#3254] A fallen god who remembers heaven
Hi Erictang, DL, and All,

Some more brief notes on Haydn's string quartets:

I have just had the chance to have, on loan to me, the Amadaus Quartet's DG versions in three boxes (altogether 7 CDs). I have finished listening to the complete "Lark" and some other passages.

It's a pleasure to make their acquaintance. The playing is characterized by a civilized humanity we have come to expect from Haydn's chamber music. Really not much apologies need to be made about the sound (1970s), which enjoys good definition and admirable balance. The background is not exactly silent in the analogue recording, but we are more than adequately compensated with a pleasing ambient bloom.

On DG's series of Collectors Edition, there is now a single box-set of these 7 CDs. It's very tempting indeed.

Will I be tempted then? Well, I dunno, as I have an eye on Haydn's complete string quartets. Apparently it's a choice between the Decca and the Philips. But it's an investment of no small scale (22 and 21 CDs respectively). I am afraid I have to scrimp and save so as to be able to begin to be worried about that choice.

My dear friends, it's sad to be a fallen god who remembers music in heaven.

[#3255] Quartet
trollope,

Thanks for taking the initiatives to try listening to Amadeus Quartet. Indeed, the DG collectors box-set is very tempting....

Nevertheless, relax yourself and take time to enjoy the music. No need to hurry wor. Somehow, music is like food, you eat them bit by bit, then you can enjoy the taste lingered in your mouth, tongue, and throat.....just feel like eating delicious, honey-cooked chicken wing..... ^o^

....Feel like hungry already.... :P

Dr JC,

Passing by 18 Street this afternoon. It is almost impossible not to step into the Academy Music Store.

In reply to your call, I found the Boult/ Vaughan Williams. It cost me $6.99 plus 8.25% tax.
I am going to open the CD now. And my "Brooke" is running red and hot waiting to perform! I hope it will live up to the expectation. Or else I will be kick your royal behind next time we meet!

Just kidding.
