[#3231] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Listened to Shostakovich Symphony no.12,the year 1917,a work meant to celebrate the October Revolution.Though not as famous as his previous sym. such as no.5 and 11,it is still a work worth listen to, esp played by Mravinsky directing the Leningrad Sym. Orchestra. recorded shortly after the composition was finished. Both the playing and the sonics were of the highest standard, truly capturing the essence of Shostakovich.

[#3233] What are you listening to? ( classical mus chankaiming, I uaully start my listening session from 12:00am, after the ATV late news, one disc every day only > 人生至樂之事,大都發生在夜已深、入睡前的一個小時。 Whether that brief pleasure is to be had in front of a hi-fi set or in bed depends largely on whether one wishes to be amused in 聲 or 色. Let's hope one can desire both in one night – in whichever order. Seize the night then. ![]()

[#3235] amused in 聲 Last night, thanks for Limage’s hospitality, I was amused in 聲 very much and deeply impressed by the EMI Chopin Cello sonata. Du-pre playing cello, positioned middle of the room with Barenboim at the piano, a few feet behind her. If I were Barenboim, I would be sure to step into that 3D soundstage and get in touch with my dear Jacqueline. Duly conscious, this 3D illusion or virtual reality is in fact, CD signal converted by that painstakingly placed, room coupled flat panel pair named Maggie, the 'transducer', a term I learnt yesterday. Tonight, 聲 as usual, via my barely listenable setup, continue with my favor Mozart violin Sonata, K304 e minor. This time by Szymon Goldberg / Radu Lupu (a 4 CD Decca set at bargain price). For K304, the 公整的 Grumiaux/Klien pair is still my preference while Limage, will very likely, stick to his beloved Szeryng/Haebler collaboration.

[#3237] Juilus Katchen's Beethoven Piano Concerto Last night I listened to a new boxset of Beethoven Piano Concerto Complete Set played by Julius Katchen who was highly-acclaimed of his Brahms and Liszt renditions, I could not believe the grandeur, authority and aristocracy Katchen has infused into his playing by a gorgeous accompany by LSO under the baton of Piero Gamba, I haven't finished my listening of whole complete set but Piano Concertos No 4&5 and Choral Fantasy are surely one of the most captivating, lyrical and enlightened moment I ever had, apart from the renditions of Backhaus (Decca Stereo / Haas Schmidt-Isserstedt) , Kempff (DGG mono / Van Kempen) and Arrau (Philips Stereo / Haitink), Katchen turns phrases and points ornamentation with rare sparkle and sense of fun with youthful spontaneity, he conveys a freshness and a vein of poetry to me in an effortless manner and I was overwhelmed of his superb fingerwork and virtuosity, especially in the choral fantasy op.80 Katchen brings out the fun of variations with a class of his own improvisatory quality, a trite melody akin to Ode to joy in Beethoven's Ninth was sung by immaculate London Symphony Chorus with joy, excitement epilogue and utter fantasy, Katchen injects manic energy into the csarda-like variation and swagger into military march that rounds off the section... a timeless and inevitable moment which I wish to stay. Sound quality is a typical Decca demonstration quality because of legendary Kenneth Wilkinson's magical T-tree microphone set-up, though not all concertos were recorded in Kingsway Hall, sound is detailed with warm resonance! Highly recommended! ![]()

[#3238] A Nostlagic russian night with dad My friend always said that I am a old-fashioned person in music taste, dressing and working attitude, I aver and never particularly deny because classical music always withstand the test of times and gives me uncountable pleasure, I again fall in love with some marvellous Russian folk songs when my old man recently plays the Mercury CD of Balalaika and Domra, an audiophile disc but its music is more attractive than the sound effect. Having listened to the Mercury living presence audiophile CD, I searched and finally found a new incarnation of Osipov Balalaika Orchestra issued by Hugo in 1994 - "Evening in Moscow" at a CD shop (Rock Gallery) in Wan Chai Emperor Group Building Basement, Osipov Balaika Orchestra played the some famous Russian folk songs which have been my all-time favourite : Song of Volga Boatman, Troyka (三套車), "Russian and Ludmila" Overture, Guelder Rose (卡林卡), Evening in Moscow (莫斯科近郊的晚上), Katyusha (客秋莎), Picture at an Exhibition "The great gate of kiev" (Mussorgsky) & Dance with Sanbres (Khachaturian). Some songs sound familiar to me because George Lam and Hacken Lee have rearranged these folk songs to sing in Cantonese lyrics before! The Osipov orchestra played these pieces with russian unique season and slavonic fanaticism, I was amazed particularly of their playing the great gate of kiev and dance of sabres, it seems to me that both works sounds as if it should be played like this, you could easily tap your foot and sing along with the urgent and energetic melody when the ensemble of Balalakia (three strings and a triangular soundbox plucked with fingers), Bayan (Russian style Accordion) and Domra (three-stringed type guitar played by a plectrum) plays these dynamic section, truly amazing performance! Songs like Troyka, Katyusha and Evening in Moscow were mellifluous, endearing , touching and introspective. My old dad told me that how influential these works were when they studied the russian culture in mainland during 1950's, they could sing along with these songs without hurdle, such a nostalgic night! Buy or not?! see whether you like an audiophile but musically engaging disc, the sound quality is undoubtedly dynamic, detailed and blooming. George ![]()

[#3239] A Nostlagic russian night with dad 早晨...

[#3243] A night of Sibelius I am sure erictang and George must have experience with Limage setup already, the soundstage in Limage castle was vivid, timbre of intrument was trueful and is a benchmark for tuning my Hi Fi at home. After listening to Limage setup, I understand the importance of `room coupling' and have move my speaker into the middle of my living room. Last night, listened to Sibelius' symphony No.2 by Ashkenazy and Philharmonia Orchestra. The music was one of the most approachable among Sibelius symphony, but I still found that this symphony lack a memorable melody, maybe a beautiful melody was no longer fashionable in early 20th century. The digital recording by Decca and Kenneth Wilkinson in Kingsway hall was stunning, with its silent background, you can hear every detail in s wide and deep sound stage, a demonstrative disc in every way. ![]()

Thank you so much. I found Bach's music very relaxing and Rachmaninov's very romantic. Any recommendations on good recordings of these composers? Any must buy CD for new beginner? And are there any good place to shop around beside HMV? Thanks Michael |
