| [#3298] Kogan and Gilels CD jttlee, For the Kogan/Gilels CD, it's good. However, Oistrakh's playing sounds warmer and more elegant than Kogan. Oistrakh's warm sounding is due to his style of vibrato, and thus the harmonics. Never, Kogan's playing and Gilels' partnership are very good already. The marked price is HK$125. If one is a member with Shun Cheong, then he can get 10% discount. So that's around HK$112.50. |

| [#3299] Barbirolli's Mahler 6 Tanuski, Barbirolli's Mahler 6 is good (compared with Mitropoulos, Solti, Sinopoli....etc). His conducting sounded heavy in this piece. The sound quality is good. BTW, do you live in HK? I remember that you live outside HK..... Just have this query, because if you live in HK, then buying in Shun Cheong will be cheaper than buying through amazon.com. BTW, I also want to buy Mahler 2 and 3 by Barbirolli too. As for other CDs that I bought few days earlier, stayed tuned.... (Besides, please bear with me for just giving brief comments for CDs. I'm not good enough to write detailed comments..... :P ) |

| [#3300] Art is long, life is short. Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony has rightly earned its place in every classical music lover's collection. As a rule, we own either Rattle's or Klemperer's, or both. Now that friends in this thread have said nice things about Barbirolli's on Testament, I am about to dig deeper into my pocket to seek for my third "Resurrection". But I have found myself torn between this version and Stokowski's Royal Albert Hall BBC Proms recording. They are both in mono. Things get more complicated when I discovered a few moments ago that there is a stereo Barbirolli recorded in the last year of his life: Helen Donath (sop) & Birgit Finnilä (mez) / Südfunk-Chor, Chor der Staatlichen Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart / Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (Live recording in stereo, April 1970) EMI (Great Conductors of the 20th Century) 7243 5 75100 2 8 (2 CD) Also included in this set are Elgar's "Enigma" Variations (r. 1956); Ravel's Ma Mère l'oye – Suite (r. 1957); and Puccini's Madama Butterfly – Conclusion to Act 1 (r. 1966). Anyone here would like to comment please? Or, come to think of it, do we need the companionship of a third "Resurrection", after Rattle and Klemperer? | [#3305] Kogan and Gilels CD Hi DL, Thanks for your comment. I haven't listened to a lot of works by Oistrakh or Kogan. Though I like Oistrakh's Brahms violin concerto, I prefer other violinists to Oistrakh on other works. For example, for Tchaikovsky violin concerto #1, I prefer Heifetz and Milstein to Oistrakh (though Oistrakh's 2nd movement is also very good). For Mendelssohn violin concerto #1, I like Grumiaux's performance more than Oistrakh's. For Kogan, my only memory is from an RTHK 4 program by Mr Ho Chi Ping a couple of months ago. He dedicated an entire hour to Kogan, which I remembered was very enjoyable. It's a pity nearly all Kogan CDs are over $100. So far I still haven't bought one yet. Nonetheless, thanks for your information on the Kogan/Gilels CD. Regards, John |

| [#3306] Mahler Symphony Nr. 2 Hello trollope, When i was shopping the Barbirolli (JB) Mahler 2, i was aware of the Stokowski (LS) version too. But for me LS could somehow made 'strange'/'unconventional' orchestration/ intepretation - pls allow my unprofessional terms - which, as you have heard in the Decca Stokowski edition, is present in the Beethoven Symphony No.9 (i have the phase 4 stereo version). well, i haven't heard the stereo JB version and can't help u much here; but i'd like to share my 'prejudice' while i am looking at versions: the older recording - though in mono - warrants excellent playing and singing given the orchestra and soloists. More, the sound quality is superb. i think tanuski was also 'absorbed' into the music when he listened to it. BTW, do u like orchestral song cycles by Mahler or Wagner ? Cheers. |

| [#3311] Mahler Symphony Nr. 2 Hi wa1, If you've Richter's playing of Tschaikovsky Piano Con 1 and Rach Piano Con 3 on DG, then I think you should get Richter's recording of the same pieces in earlier Russian years (original recordings are owned by Melodya, I think they're released by Yedang now). Richter's Piano Con recordings in USSR are superior over those in DG. His recordings with Karajan was dictated by Karajan, so can't see Richter's strength in those recordings..... |

| [#3314] Tchaikovsky+Richter+Mravinsky+Leningrad Hi wal, DL, and All, On Richter's Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto that is NOT with Karajan, allow me to copy for you what I posted on the 14th last month (05-03-14 17:51) in this thread: [Quote] It's a pity that Richter's most widely available Tchaikovsky concerto is this one, recorded in 1962 with Karajan conducting the Vienna Symphony Orchestra (DG "The Originals"), attractively coupled with Rachmaninov's second). [Unquote] Now, on this Richter + Mravinsky + Leningrad version, the Philips edition I mentioned is found in a 3-CD set entitled "The Art of Piano – Great Pianists of the 20th Century", an accompanied issue to go with the DVD by the same name. For copyright reasons, this issue has remained a one-off affair for Philips after its release in 1999. I think Pro Sound in Central has the last or last but one set. On the Kondrashin version, it has been released by Revelation (RV 10057). As far as I know, Yedang has not reissued it before its demise, otherwise I will be a happier man. |

Dear me, I've already got such a long shopping list there, so much so that I have delayed my visit for quite sometime. Stokowski's Beethoven No.9 on Decca, however enjoyable it definitely is, is not a version to return to very often. On Wagner's and Mahler's song cycles, I am sure I am not qualified to give counsel. But my favorite CD in this department has for almost a decade been Marilyn Horne on Decca (436 200-2): (1) Wagner: Wesendonk-Lieder (2) Mahler: Kindertotenlieder (3) Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen The "Kindertotenlieder", a Kingsway Hall 1969 recording, is particularly fine. If I am to invest in another "Kindertotenlieder", I would go for the Janet Baker / Sir John Barbirolli EMI disc. Back in my student days, a German girl introduced me to Dame Janet Baker's rendition of Schubert's lieder. I have her EMI double CD (forte): 78'19" + 76'44" of superb musical experience. My only regret: no texts and translations. |
