[#3271] What are you listening to? ... and talking of this act, Knappertsbusch's recording (in stereo) with the great Svanholm and the even greater Flagstad on Decca IS the best since Walter's with Melchior and Lehmann in the 1930s. In the Wiener Festwochen 1963, there was also a concert performance with Claire Watson, Fritz Ulh and Josef Greindl + VPO (It's on DVD in b/w from TDK... but is less exciting to me though.) ![]()

Stock market goes up and down, you can seek some advice from 談天說地, but I have one motto: 貴上極則反賤,賤下極則反貴。 |

[#3274] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night, listened to Gergiev and London symphony orchestra perfoming Prokofiev's symphony No.1 and 4 (revised) version. Symphony No.1 was written when Prokofiev was still a student, clearly he was heavily influence by Haydn's symphony, although the structure was classical, the music was very innovative and modern. Symphony No.4 was initial written before the second world war with some fragments pf ballet music, however it was not too well received and Prokofiev revised it all together, although it still have trace of ballet melody, but the music was full of the scream of a suppresed soul, maybe as a result of political suppression by Stalin. Playing by Gergiev have strong russian spirit with great and dynamic sonics by Philips. ![]()

[#3275] What are you listening to? ( classical mus wal, I also found the Wotan's Farewell in Walkure scene very moving. In one hand, Wotan was a love and caring father and don't want to send his daughter to a long sleep; on the other hand, he was `the god of all gods' and have to enforce law and order. when he sing the word `farewell' in german, the tenor must sound heartbreaking as well as authoritative. Hotter (Wotan in Solti's recording) did that. ![]()

[#3276] What are you listening to? hello ckm, Yes, Hotter was a great Wotan (after Friedrich Schorr) and had a tenderly dark voice. I have heard him sing with Solti and there is also an excerpt of Act I with Nilsson in the Les Introuvables set. The entrance line 'Leb wohl du kuehnes, herrliches Kind' is a demanding one, the singer has to command it so very well that it can sound powerful but sympathetic. have u also heard the Solti/Flagstad/Edelmann set or the Karajan/Varnay/S. Bjoerling set both on a single CD ? (The Karajan set is on Great Recording now.) ![]()

[#3283] What are you listening to? (Hello wal & chankaiming,) From John Culshaw's introduction in the CD booklet of Solti's 1965 studio recording of The Walkure: "In one sense, the Ring begins with The Walkure, for Wagner designated Rheingold as a prelude to all that follows ... "The main reason why Die Walkure has held its place as the most popular of the Ring dramas is that its characters, whether mortal or immortal, are involved with very human emotions and situations. It is a story of love and pursuit; of command and defiance; and of punishment and forgiveness. But like any other major work of art, Die Walkure exits on two levels, and to understand it in depth we have to set it within its context of the entire Ring. It is ture that the music of Die Walkure reveals a lyricism almost wholly absent from Rheingold, where Wagner's purpose was to lay out a narrative and provide a musical and dramatic foundation on which the whole structure of the Ring could be mounted." ![]()

[#3284] What are you listening to? Schubert's string trio was one of the most beautiful music Schubert ever written, I got this Duo by Grumiaux trio for more than 10 years, never think of getting another version. You can hear the tone of Authur Grumiaux, his violin tone have a silvery sheen, tasteful and elegant, you will enjoy!.

[#3285] What are you listening to? ck2005, Noctune was the most lyrical music Chopin ever written, it is also one of the most romantic music ever in classical music. Chopin base his composition on songs and he simply make the piano sing. Wonderful article by 沈鑒治 完全的浪漫主義——《夜曲》 http://www.musicdata.org/md_new/pages/posts/16.-A7B9A5FEAABAAEF6BAA9A5dB8qA1xA1xA1mA9A6B1A1n106.php Pires playing of these noctune was nothing but magical, her touch was so sensitive and inspirational that put ever Rubinstein into shade. I am sure you will buy the whole set in a short time. ![]()

[#3286] What are you listening to? CKM hing, you see I also borrowed Rubinstein's Chopin. By comparison, I found that Rubinstein performance in that CD is plain and somehow dull. Pires playing on the other hand is smooth, sensational and pleasant to my ears.
