[#3291] Rubinstein Rubenstein is an enigma to me. For most of what he plays, he plays with borad strokes, and I am afraid those who like details must look elsewhere. Sometimes though he gives the music the right shape and has the right feeling. I am also not a great fan of his Chopin. At least they are proper (unlike performances by many more superficial pianists) but the common stereo versions for sure lack details. He can be surprising though. A few Beethoven sonatas are excellent. ![]()

[#3292] Grumiaux Trio At the super price of the Philips DUO series, one should grab ALL of GRUMIAUX TRIO's performances, which include Beethoven and Mozart's String trios. With augmented personnel, they recorded the definitive complete String Quintets, available in 2 separate DUO volumes, but also available under the guise of the following prettier TRIO edition. The String Quintets represent the pinnacle of Mozart's string writing. Grab them! ![]()

[#3293] Naxos Audiophil CD During yesterday yumcha meeting, Sokps kindly offer me a CD disc of Vanghan Williams symphony No 7&8, I was surprised initially, why all of a sudden Sokps would interested in symphony of Vanghan Williams? Sokps then pointed out to me that this disc was actually listed in Harry Preston's Super CD list 2002 for its superior sonic performance. After I go back to my clinic and have a search in internet, I was even more suprised to find that Naxos occupied 3 place out of 12 Baker's Dozen: Master of Chinese Percussion (Volume II) — Marco Polo 8.225942 (HDCD) Gladiator (soundtrack)"神鬼戰士"原聲帶 — Decca 989 467 094 BUY CD Vaughan Williams: Sinfonia Antartica — Naxos 8.550737 The Lost World — Fathom 11504 Copland: Third Symphony — Reference RR-93CD BUY CD Penderecki: Credo — Hanssler 98311 BUY CD Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 — Naxos 8.555714 Puccini: Tosca — EMI 5 5717320 BUY CD Vaughan Williams: A Sea Symphony — Telarc CD-80588 BUY CD Britten: Billy Budd (complete) — Chandos 9826(3) BUY CD Mahler: Symphony No. 3 (Leinsdorf) — BMG 07026-63469 The Thin Red Line (soundtrack)"紅色警戒"原聲帶 — BMG 0902–63382 BUY CD Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 1 — Naxos 8.553494 BUY CD Special Merit (ranked sonically) Ravel: Orchestral Works [96/24] — Classic Records DAD-1025 BUY CD Gershwin: Collected Works [96/24] — Classic Records DAD-1018 Antill: Corroboree [96/24] — Classic/Everest DAD-1029 Pulse [96/24] — Classic Records DAD 1062 ![]()

[#3294] Naxos Audiophil CD IMHO the HP list is ridiculous in the extreme, reflecting the man's conceit. When it comes to the classical repertorie, there are SO SO MANY great sounding CDs recorded in the same venue by the same engineers. So much of the music chosen by TAS just sound plain boring. Too much emphasis on "sound quality" and too little on musical merit. As performance, the Vaughn Williams though is an excellent one. Too bad the same cannot be said about the Naxos Tchakovsky 4th.

[#3295] Naxos Audiophil CD That immediately remind me when I was a student back in early 90s, Naxos's issue was really a good companion of a classical beginners, when most CD cost more than a $100 Naxos cost only $30-$40 per CD. At that time, they are often critized for its inferior sonic performance, however Naxos make wonder time and time again, I remember my first encounter with Naxos was a gift by my Dad of a 5CD box of Strauss's famous Waltz, some interesting music for me at that time already. Thereafter, I always empty my pocket for Naxos CD, notable purchase include, Jeno Jando's Rachmaninov piano concerto No 2, Jeno Jando's Liszt Annees de Pelerinage, Kodaly Quartet performance of Haydn's Emperor Quartet, Kaler's Dvorak and Glazunov's violin concerto, aand Brahms Hungarian Dance on orchestra. ![]()

[#3296] Naxos Audiophil CD When I go to university, I can still remember I have to study till as late as 10 pm after class, despite the competition of Philips Duo, Double Decca etc, Naxos was still my good companion in these hard working days. Moreover, with the aid of Gramophone Magazine, I can always pick those `Jewel in Naxos crown ' (English critics really know how to priase a recording, Chinese Universtiy have order Gramophone Magazine regularly and store all issues of Gramophone magazine since 1970s, stored in Chung Chi library, the place I study every day) But with the advancement in recording technology, Naxos was no longer a representative of low quality production, I still treasure Jeno Jando's Mozart's piano concerto, various Mozart late symphony by various performers, Handel's water music, Kliegel's Schumann Cello concerto. ![]()

[#3297] Naxos Audiophil CD 15 years now on my road in classical music, I still found Naxos's CD issue innovative while companis like DG, Decca, Philips, EMI are issuing their 1001 versions of Beethoven symphony by Simon Rattle and Abbado ( I am not interested at all). 15 years on, Naxos have growth from a small company based in Hong Kong to an internation company which have the greatest market share in the world, those who critized Naxos for it poor sonic and performance quality ( common in Gramophone) must eat their words. I was especially impressed by Naxos effrort in recording great music by not so well know composer. My notable recent purchase included: Glazunov 's String Quintet Rachmaninov piano trio New recording of Szymanowski violin concerto by Kaler and Wit Myaskovsky's violin concerto All of them are stunning recordings! ![]()

[#3298] Naxos Naxos' Vanghan Williams symphony No 7&8, I've listened once in Limage's place, audiophile grade. Naxos started with artists from Eastern Europe, (which probably costs less), but they are by no mean inferior. Once in a while, its office was in Pak Tai Street, To Kwa Wan, which my friend worked there before. The building has been demolished and now rebuilded as "Metropolitan Rise".

[#3299] Naxos Audiophil CD So much bullshit, thank you for your patience. Comming back to Vanghan Williams's symphony NO.7&8, this symphony was wriiten in memory of the hero act of captain Scott who sacrifice himself for the live of other during their trip to Sountern Pole, the music was based on fragment from material originally composed for music in a film. Most of the movements are slow movement, although it was written in 1950s, Symphony No.7 was not too difficult to digest and have it own interesting moments, although it still lack a memorable melodic theme. What makes it a TAS disc was probably due to its extremely dynamic recording, wide and deep sound a stage. (It is actually too dynamic if you have a neighbour next door, strongly advice to listen only if your neighbour or family is out of the house.) The orchestra was a huge one with female choir, a sorpano ( I don't know why she was recording on the far right hand side of the stage, beside the choir), a augmented woodwind and brass comparable to Mahler's sympnony. However, despite the effort of all the musican, who work very hard indeed, the music lack the emotional impact of a Mahler's symphony, or even less impressive than Beethoven's Appassionata solo piano sonata. Audiophil who want a similiar sonic excitment but with a more interesting musical content might consider the following disc, recorded in same location of music by Mussorgsky. ![]()

[#3300] Grumiaux Trio "At the super price of the Philips DUO series, one should grab ALL of GRUMIAUX TRIO's performances, which include Beethoven and Mozart's String trios." And the Brahms's trios (Beaux Arts Trio) too! Highly engaging from the first note. BTW I reckon the cover art of the philips duo and trio series are plain boring, which often belies the content they carry. Naxos does a much better job in this regard.

[#3303] 史特勞斯︰阿爾卑斯交響曲 在LP第二面, 有音效像關正傑的"天籟...星河傳說", 是"Aerophone" 嗎 ? Below is extracted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eine_Alpensinfonie The use of Samuel's Aerophone is prescribed in the orchestration notes along with the instrumentation. This device, invented by Belgian flautist Bernhard Samuel in 1912, is a bellows operated by a foot pedal with an air hose attached to the mouthpiece of woodwind instruments and aids the player to sustain long notes without interruption.

It's particular true to the poor student like me in the early 1990's (BTW, we belongs to the same era same campus and might ever met in CU, what a small world!). I still got 3 Naxos CDs bought in late 1980s/early 1990's in my cabinet, including Jeno Jando's Beethoven. look. ![]() |
