| [#3311] 回覆(40): Hello lym, i also have the Boult/Brahms CD whose pic you've posted here. i find it plain (in a good sense) and lyrical - but i still prefer OK's power and dynamics. One bit of drawback is that the sound seems strange, which i realise in some of this HMV series. i have also been looking for Boult's Nos 1 & 2 but it seems they are not available - only an old version ($$$) No.1 in red cd case is being sold 2nd hand... |

| [#3318] 回覆(40): Last night, listened to Schubert symphony No.9 `Great' played by Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of Solti. Schubert's music was ever delightful, matched with gorgeous stings and refined woodwind of Vienna Philharmonic, it sound heavenly. Solti's took this great piece of music at a fast pace, making this 50 minutes long symphony sound more energetic, however he did not ignored the reflective side of this symphony. This recording was a early digital one engineered by Kenneth Wilkinson, the recording was demonstrative grade in itself and better than my other verions ( Bohm , Furtwangler, Szell, Colin Davis). But after comparing with Vanghan Williams symphony No 7 on Naxos, I must say the recording industry have made a big step forward.  |

Again, at bargin price. http://www.arkivmusic.com/classical/album.jsp?album_id=89742 Finally get the orchestrated version of Passacaglia and Fugue in c monir BWV 582 which I first encountered in the film "White Night". Its fun that my favour piece, Fugue in g minor BWV 578 "Little G minor" is started by an oboe. Sonically, there is no trace it is a 1958 recording.  |

| [#3321] 回覆(40): Having listened to Mahler the other day, focused on chamber music yesterday. First was Tchaikovsky's string quartet no.1 played by Gabrieli Quartet recorded in 1976 in the famous Kingsway Hall by Wilkinson. I don't see this record in any super audiophile list, but it is of demonstration quality. String quartet is very difficult to reproduce well, here you can hear clearly the four instruments arranged in a semi circle with the right timbre of the individual string, and the interplay amongst them, with no hiding and masking, you can also feel the ambience of the Kingsway hall without difficulty. The recording quality is matched by the exceptional playing, esp. the famous slow movement, andante cantabili. Next was Gilels playing Schumann's Nachstucke and Schubert's Moments Musicaux. While I admire Richter, my heart is for Gilels. When Richter plays,you listen, you are aware of his extrordinary technique, his unique style,his brilliance. By contrast, when Gilels play, I do not aware of his presence,just immerse myself into the music In Schumann and Schubert,his touch,tone colour, and phrasing is so natural, so unpretentious that made you feel it is the right way of playing. |

| [#3329] Haydn's Creation Last night, listened to Part I of Haydn's Creation, I start from the inrtroduction movement `Chao' to the third day, Haydn's ortario cannot be more different from Handel's, Haydn's Creation is more dramatic while Handel was more lyrical. The recording on Naxos is demonstrative grade, it is dynamic and transparent, the playing was on period instrument, taking the piece at a fast pace and sound exciting to me, three soloist was outstanding, I would especially praise Im ( sorpano) for her sweet voice and effortless singing of high note.
