I went to some of his concerts in the year before he left HKPO. 信報財經新聞 2005-04-27 「牛仔總監」施明漢病逝 周凡夫 香港管弦樂團第四任音樂總監施明漢（Kenneth Schermerhorn），於上周一在美國納什維爾病逝，享年七十五歲。由他出任音樂總監超過二十年的納什維爾交響樂團（Nashville Symphony）透露，施明漢於上月二十二日入住范德比爾特大學醫療中心治療淋巴系統病變。 施明漢在紐約出生，是位一生充滿傳奇的藝人。家族是早期荷蘭移民，和音樂並無淵源，父親是職業足球員，他自己也喜愛打網球，他出掌港樂時五十四歲，每星期仍堅持跑步十五公里。他能夠成為美國樂壇上一位具有成就的音樂家，全憑四十年代在波士頓紅燈區走紅的脫衣舞孃莎莉．基美。這位廣受歡迎的舞孃是施明漢的音樂「伯樂」，她讓施明漢在伴奏的樂隊中吹小號，伴奏的酬金，正好作為生活費，加上新英倫音樂學院的獎學金，他終得以在日間上課，晚間賺錢，利用休息時間做音樂作業。在這種燈紅酒綠的半工半讀環境下，施明漢能夠完成音樂學業，亦可真不簡單。 施明漢曾被徵募入伍，但無法適應嚴格紀律，改而加入在德國的美國第七陸軍特殊任務組，指揮由逃避兵役的難兄難弟組成的樂隊，那年他才二十一歲。到二十七歲時他已當上新澤西州交響樂團的音樂總監，只花了四年時間，便把樂團首次帶進卡內基堂演出而大受好評。施明漢於一九八○年六月首次擔任港樂客席指揮，一九八四年九月被邀擔任音樂總監，當年最保守估計也不會少於年薪五十萬元，而自九八三年以來，他便一直是美國納什維爾交響樂團的音樂總監，所以他在港樂任職期間便要經常穿梭於太平洋兩岸。 施明漢體格健碩，身高六呎二吋，風度翩翩，儀容瀟灑。為吸引更多人聽音樂，他在美國為納什維爾交響樂團拍攝的電視宣傳片中，扮演《奪寶奇兵》的奶狻星、駕駛老爺飛機的出色機師和西部牛仔都維妙維肖，可說極有演戲細胞。他的指揮很有表演魅力，動作輕盈優美，不算誇張，卻很有傳情達意的力量。亦有論者認為他的指揮較表面，對樂曲的內容表達發掘不夠，但相信很多人都同意，他是位帶有表演光采的指揮家，很能控制現場氣氛來左右聽眾情緒。 不過，當年港樂不少團員對施明漢那種帶有「神經質」的處事方式不以為然，至於他排練的態度，也被不少團員批評，亦有人認為施明漢脾氣變化大，有點神化，也有人叫他做「神經漢」。 施明漢在任期間，有幾項讓人留有記憶的「軼事」。其一是一九八五年一月公益金百萬行，他主動要求參加，與未婚妻以優異成績行畢全程，為公益金籌得近七千元善款，是他上任首個樂季為香港所做的一項社會公益。其二是一九八七年一月六日在金鐘紅棉道婚姻註冊處，與相識五載、齊走公益金百萬行的未婚妻賀蒂絲結婚「拉埋天窗」，新娘子從事室內設計及化妝模特兒，施明漢到美國演奏時在歡迎酒會中兩人邂逅。註冊當日，由港樂當年的總經理杜輝尊及前樂團行政秘書夏施夢芝擔任證婚人。 當年施明漢要求提早一年解約，官方消息透露，是因為納什維爾交響樂團出現嚴重經濟問題，故須放棄港樂之職，全力返美救亡。他於一九八九年九月離開港樂時剛做了五年。此後他專注挽救「納什維爾」，終能化解危機，二○○○年帶同樂團舉行了成左漪國東岸巡迴演出，二○○三年和樂團灌錄的一張ＣＤ還獲格林美唱片大獎提名。 施明漢育有兩女一子，多名孫兒，死後遺下的作品有合唱曲、管弦樂曲、室樂曲等超過五十首。以他名字命名作為紀念的一座新交響樂廳正在納什維爾興築中，奈何施明漢已無法親睹明年落成揭幕啟用的盛況了！ |

Mozart concerto & Shostovich concerto are in stero. BTW , Can we share or recommend some good MONO historial recordings....?? I bought it from Shun Cheong some years ago, but Shun Cheong ceased importing Tahra CD anymore. You guys may try to find the set, or if it's too heavy, then try finding the individual CD in Tahra's web site. The mono recording is HiFi. | [#3371] Great Mono Recordings I'm sorry about Schermerhorn, I'm a concert-goer when he's the Artistic Director of HKPO. Hi trazom, I don't see the Oistrakh $99 EMI 4 CD box set in Causeway, HMV. Where do you find it? Instead I bought 2 x Superme 200 Classical CD at $138 tonight. Hi Wal, I also have the Callas Il barbiere di Siviglia. But if my memory is correct, as a whole, it is not the best when compare to the others. Hi NEC, How is the Triple concerto LP, it is also on my buying list. I have that recording on CD with Brahms double concerto. Infact, the opera I've mentioned last night are all 2nd hand LP. Condition of opera records are in general better than single record. |
