[#3350] 弦裂 It's interesting reading all the stuff about 節, who was "really" a Nazi and who wasn't. During that age, few escaped turmoil and compromise. There were accusations against Bohm, not to say the great Knappertsbusch and Abendroth etc etc. I don't believe in wars, but neither do I believe in war crimes and the even more hypocritical war crime trials that we see these days, where the "judges" more often than not outdo the "criminals" in cruelty. For me, it's naive, if not immature, to wipe out anyone's achievement because of his personal life, political belief or manouvers, keeping in mind that we hear accounts only from second-hand sources, not from the protagonist himself. Do we know what's deep down in the heart of the artist? Do we believe just because someone is in the Nazi party he does not really believe in music? Can we say Hitler was not a genuine music lover? Wagner was loathed by the Jewish people, but gradually even the Israel Phil played him. For an excellent account of this saga, read this stirring book by Helmut Stern, Jewish first violinist under Karajan (hired and well treated by Karajan BTW). At last reading this book did not even have an English translation. http://www.books.com.tw/exep/prod/booksfile.php?item=0010234008 Stern's account of the Jewish diaspora in Harbin, China is heart-rending. There's plenty about life in the BPO under Karajan here. Let's not forget Karajan helped many Jewish musicians during his long career. Grab this book while you can! I got it in HK 2 years ago. Thank you for the info. In fact, Karajan was quite a great 'opera director' for his audience's eyes. We can see good evidence on videos he made with Unitel.

Also tempting is the account by Kempe on EMI (in stereo! but quite $$$) for its cast... perhaps it will soon be reissued on Great Recordings... oh no!

As far as I know, his Madama Butterfly (with Freni and Domingo) and Otello (with Freni and Vickers) can be seen as spectacular by the standard of the time.

However, Boehm's Figaro should be noted for comparison for filming style. And much more importantly, the Elektra video with Boehm's soundtrack must be rated as the best for its
thrilling tension and haunting atmosphere. It was the conductor's last studio project.

Oh, as for CDs, I find Karajan's Pagliacci & Cavalleria (with Bergonzi/La Scala, on DGG) and Aida (also with Bergonzi/VPO, on Decca) particularly stunning!

Plus:
1. Rosenkavalier with Schwarzkopf on EMI (would like to compare this with the live account on DGG: pictured below)
2. Il Trovatore with Price, Corelli on DGG (live)

I particular love the idea of those opera-film, you see what is going and can follow the music effortlessly, the only drawback is sometime the sorpano or tenor may not be as attractive as what I expected.

Karajan was quite handsome in his youth, what a pity that he cannot sing.

Last night, listened to Glazunov cello work on Naxos, the music was lyrical and romantic, perfect for relaxation. Rubin played with his heart on his sleeves, but the recording was poor indeed, the orchestral part lack detail and the strings sounded thin and lumpy.

All in all a great work and performance but poorly recorded.

Alexander Rudin is a great cellist, sorely in need of re-appraisal. His appearances with the Chopin Society were eye-opening.

It's fortunate NAXOS recorded so much of him.

美麗的音樂作品, 尤其舒曼的一曲盡顯此人自我中藏著飛快轉動的腦子. 坐上他音符快車足以暢快的上高落低地在他的園地走一轉.

自然直接, 帶點率性自信的線條.
錄音質素吾算得好.

[#3363] Karajan's Schubert

Aside from his excellent Beethoven, not many consider Karajan a classicist. Yet, in these early symphonies of Schubert, which I obtained for a song at the HMV sale, Karajan (circa late 70's) showed himself a substantial Schubertian.

Some have criticzed this set for the "heavy" approach. Yet I found the weight appropriate for the music, moving the music much closer to the stratosphere of the "unfinished" and the "great". He moves things along and the playing is faultless.

[#3366] Grieg cello Sonata
This is the first time I hear Grieg's Cello sonata, bu the experience is refreshing as well as enjoyable.

Grieg was one of the few compose who can write endless melody, everything he wrote are sunny and lyrical, his Cello sonata were no exception. The music is attractive from very first note till the end.

Playing by two young Norway musician was passionate, I don't think I can have another recording for comparison, but do I need one?

The review on Gramophone cannot be more appropriate: "Birkeland and Gimse play it with enough imaginative vitality and warmth to melt the proverbial heart of stone"

Recording standard was quite decent, although by no mean demonstrative grade.
