| [#3471] What are you listening to? ( classical mus Last night listened to Sibelius's third symphony, It was a special experience to listen to these symphony in this cold winter night. Sibelius lives in a time when Finland was controlled by Russia, and his symphony always showed his love for his homeland and the feeling of suppression, his symhony no.3 was a exception however. The music were lyrical and natural, always remined me of Grieg rather than a national hero who fight for his country. ( classical mus Last night, continued my exploration of Sibelius's symphony cycle, I listened to symphony No.4 once again, symphony No. 4 was written when Sibelius was diagnosed to have tumor, although it was proven to be benign, the impact on Sibelius was most serious. The Whole symphony was full of sad and depressed feelings, Sibelius was particaularly fond of using brass instrument to express his dispair, those love Mahler symphony No.9 may like it. |

| [#3480] What are you listening to? ( classical mus There was no better ways to spend the cold nite listening to my favourite music with the monoblock valve amp. acting as heater and light source. First is the cello sonata by Chopin,a not so popular but grand work created in the late stage of his career when his health was fading. Cellist was Andre Navarra, pianist Jeanne Marie Darre. Navarra, with his impeccable technique, gave a sad, romantic account of this work that was touching and moving, the accompaniment by Darre was no less impressive. Next was Brahms Symphony no. 2 by Klemperer and Philmonia Orchestra. Brahms created this symphony shortly after his no.1.This work was supposed to be sunny and pastoral,in contrast to the 1 which was dark and tragic. Klemperer ,as usual, gave a broad, measured account,which to me,was not that sunny nor pastoral. In some instance, esp the 3rd movement,allegretto gracioso, he lacked the pace and urgency that I liked from this work. Overall, not my cup of tea. |

| [#3487] Brahms on a cold dark night kh33: I enjoyed your reporting on cold night listening! Ah, Brahms 2nd. One of my favorites indeed. I'm not sure though about the "sunny" bit... The Adagio always feels melancholic to me. And I like it that way. Aren't we music lovers sometimes "masochistic" in first craving for certain emotions and then seeking catharsis? Strangely, we were immersed in Brahms at the same moment. For me it was the first piano concerto played by Moravec. My reaction also mirrored yours; too soft. Jochum's cycles are under-rated. The DG mono is excellent (in performance and sound), while the EMI stereo is unfortunately spread out over 2 separate 2fers.  |

| [#3489] Ashkenazy Shostakovich On certain days I have been listening to a lot of music. I am simultaneously digging away at several symphonic cycles. I have listened to the first 4 CDs of this set, symphonies 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 and fillers. The sound is stupendous (except for the NHK performances, all recorded by the dependable Dunkerley and Morfoot). The performances are controlled but I find them highly idiomatic and satisfying, not bad for the Royal PO and the NHK. I've always believed Ashkenazy is an under-rated conductor.  |
