Did a crude comparison of Mozart's popular piano sonata K331 played by Ingrid Habler and Lili Krauss. Both lady Mozart specialist, one from the seventies,the other from fifty to sixties.
Habler played by the book,her playing refined, her touch delicate. but she was predictable, and to some extend boring.
Krauss played with much freer tempo and rubato that takes sometime to get used to, but become convincing when you considered the style and personality of Mozart. There were surprises, pleasant surprises that made her playing much more interesting, esp. in the famous last movement,Alla Turca. There is a saying that what Landowska was to Bach, Snabel to Beethoven,Walter to Mahler, Krauss is to Mozart. When she had matured, she remarked that when she was young she found Mozart was easy,then she remembered Snabel's saying"Mozart is too easy for children and too difficult for adult" and she realised how true it is.

Busy in preparing dessertation for diploma course, 5000 words dissertation on a simple topic is really a huge project for me who type 30 words in every consultation records.

Last night, coincidentally some music by Schubert, his symphony No 5 and 8 with Vienna Philharmonic, the strings of Vienna Philharmonic was something special, it is smooth as silk and as sweet as honey, Solti was surprising relax and graceful, far different from the fiery conductor I usually associated with.

Recording by Decca was demonstrative grade with nice ambience, a winner in every way.

Another disc I played last night was Brahms and Mendelssohn's violin concerto by Nathan Milstein, I found Milstein too aggressive for my taste, although Milstein was really fiery. Personally, I still preferred Grumiaux's version on Brahms and Chung's version on Mendelssohn for their sweet violin tone and refined phasing.

Compare to Heifetz, Milstein is far from as aggressive as Heifetz in tempo and phrasing. Though Milstein's playing is highly acclaimed of his energetic, accurate and fiery style.

Listened to Helmut Walcha playing Book 2 on the cembalo. it's a great work for its being 活潑悠揚. (on the super budget EMI set: picture below is the old edition)

i have S. Richter's Book 1 on RCA, will also get Book 2 because it sounds really different on the piano.

In this cold, cold nite listened to Heifetz playing the Sibelius Violin Concerto to get some Nordic feel. Others may have their choice of violinist, some like Oistrahk,some Camilla Wick,to me there is only Heifetz,he literally owns this concerto. From start it is quintessential Heifetz,his bowing so precise and clinical,his vibrato so appropriate, his phrasing so right that you cannot find imperfection. coupled with his style,I tend to feel this is the only way to play this piece while listening.

[#3506] Prokofiev's symphony
Prokofiev symphony no 2&3 was rarely heard on concert podium, actually it was full of lovely ballet melodies, my first encounter with these two symphony was a enjoyable experience already.
