[#3579] NY Hi-Fi Show
I am going to conclude the whole event with this guy. Please meet Ken Christianson of Naim.

He is the producer of all the Naim CDs that we love. Very nice and easygoing guy. I was so tired and forgot to pick up my credit card after paying. He practically tracked me down and returned the card to me.

I was about leaving the Hilton Hotel….

[#3581] Chopin's Sonatas Nos. 2 & 3
Hi erictang (and All), I am not surprised that you enjoy Murray Perahia's Chopin sonatas. (Is that Sony 76242?) Perahia seldom disappoints and he excels both in solo music and as a soloist in concertos.

I have listened to this Perahia disc before but I am not an owner, mainly because I have already had no less than half a dozen versions of these two sonatas. I posted my detailed comments on three of them here three months ago (05-01- 23:02). May I add a few words here?

(1) Pollini (r.1985) on DG, when he was at the peak of his career, capable of setting the world on fire (to borrow Schonberg's opinion of the Italian in "The Great Pianists from Mozart to the Present"). It's a pity he has become rather bland in recent years.
(2) Uchida (r.1987) on Philips. Let me be honest, Chopin is not her forte and her successes in Mozart and Debussy are not repeated here. But her slow movements in both sonatas are so charming that one doesn't care whether the truth is told. Besides, the recorded sound is among the best I've come across in a CD, in the sense that it is quite simply believable. My edition is the Japanese Philips PHCP-10522. Its first CD edition is 420 949-2.
(3) Rubinstein (r.1961) on JVC xrcd24 is my first choice – if such there can be. If I were to lose this rather expensive disc tomorrow, I would buy a new one in less than a week's time. The poetry of Chopin via Rubinstein is one of humans' greatest (re)creations.

[#3583] Chopin's Sonatas Nos. 2 & 3
The Perahia Chopin Sonata is recorded in 1974, mine is LP from ebay and together with his Mozart piano concerto No.15 & 16 in the same batch.
From http://www.euronet.nl/~mgw/music/cd_classical.html, the CD is CBS MK 76242

The CD picture is from amazon and LP has the same cover.

Because of problem on the amp, I cannot play LP at the moment.
Infact it is repiared today but I left the cables in repairment shop, which is closed in the holiday.

About Chopin Sonata, I also have the Pollini, Ashkenazy, ARGERICH. Recently I have No.3 by Milhail Pletnev, in my opinion, he is not as good as the others.

I only have one or two (from my friend before) records by Uchida and also only a few records by Rubinstein. After reading this thread, I am tempted to explore the artists unknown to me before.

I don't have any XRCD, does it sound very good?

There is music called 'typewriter' by Anderson these 2 saturday in radio 4, the music is similar to 'toy symphony' by Mozart,
anyone know what it is?

Intersting discussion on the Chopin pianists. My few words:

Perahia - He always plays beautifully, but in the past I had consistently found him rather bland. Recently though he seems quite different, injecting more life into his playing. I like his recent Bach and Chopin CDs.

Pollini - I love his earlier Chopin indeed. My favorite is the CD of polonaises.

Rubinstein - I think he does have the general feel, but the more I listen the more I find him lacking in detail.

Uchida - Tollope's comments go for the Schubert sonata's too. At first I really resisted them, but they have their moments. Indeed she plays the grave/slow movements better there too.

erictang:
For Leroy Anderson, an american, who composed mainly light music and his typewriter is his most famous piece alongside the blue walze, etc.

To try his music, the best introduction is the Naxos newly released CD.

Agree with DJ about the early Pollini's Chopin. His technique and virtuosity is awesome, and I still consider his early recording of 1st piano concerto the best.
Rubinstein's Chopin is the atandard, but lack surprise.
There are two other pianist worth exploring, A Brailowsky and W. Malculzinsky, their Chopin are inspiring.
Just my two cents.

After listen to opening of a few poloanises by Pollini and Rubinstein, I'm not listening to Pollini.

For every pieces, Pollini's playing is firm and energinetic when compare to Rubinstein. Eg the aggressive opening of No.1 and the military like No.3, beautifully played left hand octaves in No. 4

As the word "Polonaise" suggests, the genre has Polish origins. Quoted from http://inkpot.com/concert/nafa99berman2.html

"the Polonaises can be considered extremely heavy repertoire. Far from their origins as stately dances, Chopin's Polonaises are epics integrated closely with his life and innermost feelings, mostly to do with patriotism for his motherland, Poland, which was under Russian domination during his lifetime. "

Here, I perfer the Pollini; his playing reveals the 'national traits'. I particular like (especially the opening by pollini) No.5; No.6 .
Just my personal opinion.

Interesting discussions indeed. I concur with some of the points of you guys.

Pollini's Chopin Polonaises was one of the earliest CDs that I bought (I bet it's one of the first ten).

Yeah, Rubinstein's Chopin is not as energetic as Pollini (but Rubinstein was considered as more powerful than his contemporaries already, whereas the latter were more like salon pianists). However, Rubinstein's playing is elegant and musical.

Rubinstein's Chopin playing is standard, but he's the one who established such standard and influenced pianists after him. Maybe, after years of listening, his playing is no surprise, but his playing is really enjoyable.

Another Chopin expert worthed mentioning is Horowitz. He's more powerful and dramatic than Pollini, and no less musical than Rubinstein.

IMO, one should buy Chopin recordings of all 3 pianists: Pollini, Rubinstein and Horowitz. So that one can select the CD to listen to according to one's mood.

For HiFi fans: if Rubinstein is MF amp, Pollini may be a Classe amp and Horowitz a Krell. Just an analogy..... :)

[#3592] Chopin's Piano Concerto No.1
Hi kh33, do you mean Pollini's Chopin 1st concerto with Kletzki conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra (EMI)? This is a version that has received very high critical acclaim. Sparkling moments are in abundant supply here, and the sound, though far from outstanding, is more than acceptable.

There is another Pollini version of this piece of music that I own:
Chopin: Concerto for Piano and Orhcestra No. 1 in E minor, op. 11
Schumann: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in A minor, op. 54*
Maurizio Pollini / Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra / Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra* / Jerzy Katlewicz / Karjain* [1960, 1974*]
DG (Maurizio Pollini Edition bonus CD) 471 363-2: ADD 2002

Some allowances must be made about the recorded sound, but the sense of occasion is unmistakable. This is my earliest Pollini, a live recording from the concluding concert of the 1960 International Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw, in which Pollini won the First Prize. He was eighteen.

I wonder whether this recording, released by permission of The Frederic Chopin Soceity, has been made available separately.

[#3593] Swedish delight
If you associate Sibelius's Finlandia with Finland, which piece of work do you think is the musical icon of Sweden?

Ten years ago for the Bournemouth and Berglund combination (most memorable in Sibelius and a few Shostakovich) I bought this disc:

Grieg: Peer Gynt Suites Nos. 1 & 2
Alfvén: Swedish Rhapsody, op. 19 / Elegy from "Gustav Adolf II Suite"
Järnefelt: Praeludium
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra / Paavo Berglund [1973]
EMI (Laser) CDZ 124: ADD

With this purchase I made a pleasant acquaintance with Hugo Alfvén's Swedish Rhapsody, op. 19, also known as "Midsummer Vigil". The work is generally held as the musical incarnation of Sweden.

The entire disc is a delight, and the Swedish Rhapsody (12'40") is a beauty beautifully played. I am sure all of you will recognize the melody the moment you hear it, for it is widely known in many disguises.

Two years ago I bought another EMI disc, with 20 bit / 5.1 channel dts (71021-51028-2-5) -- same music, same musicians, offering the same perennial delight.

Hugo Alfvén was born in Stockholm one hundred and thirty-three years ago, today.

[#3594] Lola Bobescu

Anyone listened to this CD from Testament?

I was quite astounded by her playing.

Testament SBT 1360
FAURÉ, Violin Sonata No.1 in A, Op.13
Lola Bobescu (violin), Jacques Genty (piano)

Lola Bobescu doesn't seem to have too many recordings.

What a pity!

[#3595] Lener Quartet
Hi Tanuski and All,

4 CDs by the Léner Quartets, featuring Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann.
Rockport PR 5004, 5006, 5008, & 5010

"These are the first four CDs in what is to be a complete reissue of all the Léner Quartet recordings on CD. The scale of the enterprise is daunting, as the Léner recorded no fewer than 210 shellac discs. The planners of the series estimate that the final set will run to 30 CDs...The Léner began recording in 1924 and were the first to record a complete Beethoven cycle ... Those who think of the Léner as oversweet in tone with too much vibrato and cloying portamento should hear the Hunt Quartet, recorded in 1924. The sound is frail and wanting in body, but the quartet's purity of style is quite striking ... Allowances have to be made for the actual quality, but then that is the case throughout the set. Robert Philip in his Grove article rightly speaks of the 'unusually homogeneous blend' of the Léner and the 'extraordinary smoothness and finish of their performances'. What is equally striking are their matchless sense of legato, a sophisticated lyricism (some might say over-sophisticated) and a generally unhurried and civilized approach. An important project."
