| [#3576] ETSC & ETRC & ESAC Members (44) I think King might be interested in talking about openly and I should stop here. :) -------------------------------------------------- why not. i always regard Ivan's place like some kind of opium den. one should go there once in while to take a few puffs and get real high and forget about reality.^-^ coming back to my analysis of ivan's room, it is a kind of miracle that anyone can get a dipole to sound 'right'. i certainly cannot. let's look at the mid-high frequency first. being a dipole, one has at 2 major sound source. the direct sound reaching the listener first while the backfiring sound source reaching the listener through a number of reflections. the strength and arrival time of backfiring sound source is critical to create an 'enjoyable' listening experience. ivan does not have any treatment of both sides for reflections so the reflection should be fairly strong on both side but the back lp rack should act like a poor diffuser. i found the sound has the characteristics of a diffused sound. this creates the impression of 'live' or presence but the image is not as solid as a traditional speaker. i like to describe this as a ghostly character. if you look at a ghost(not that i have), you see the ghost there but you can also see through the ghost. and that gives you aural climax. you have the impression that sound is floating around in mid air. it also creates an abnormal depth as well. sound images has the impression of coming from the far back. but i don't think the depth rendition this way is accurate though. regarding bass reproduction, i do find it light. although ivan does not like bass trap but all the records in the room acts like some kind of bass traps. a more accurate analysis probably requires me to lug my equipment to have a measure.^-^ i think anyone should think twice before copying ivan set up. it is a very successful set up for a dipole. it is very different than a traditional speaker placement. |

If I can take out one cabinet for both sides and place the loudspeaker near the side walls to produce a perfect triangle, I think the bass would be deeper and clearer!! |
