[#341] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 How do U compare the sound of the super 44a and the previous one? --------------------- kkitkko hing, The early version is much solid, open, lively and vivid. I heard distort sound from this super 44A and the bass is not as good. No worry,I believe the WE205 sound can be back by more fine tuning.

[#342] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Peter, I always prefer big speaker; speaker with minimum 15” woofer and horn HF driver. Small fullrange speaker may give you surprise occasionally but only limit to simple performance; meaning one or two piece instruments, may be in addition a vocal. That’s why small speaker match single ended amp nicely, due to both candidates are inherent insufficient 2-tiers (high and low), whereas push-pull methodology is complete and fill all gaps. Practically all Western Electric power-amps are P-P with the only exception - 86b, same to most of the major players/big guys back then. The amp you like the most “41/42” is also P-P. As a serious audiophile I would expect my system that can play a full spectrum of music not only selective. I presume this is part of the reason you change from Horning to Alpha 1.

[#343] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Peter, I have no luck on using wood horn on my TAD 4001. I have tried at least 4 different horns including Westlake wood, Pioneer 15 holes wood, JBL metal and Trusonic tar fills, none of them work. All wood horn sound dud with no contrast. Now I am using JIM LANSING by Ampex Model 537-510 metal horn; cut at 500Hz, doesn’t look good but sound great, I have no complaint and I love it. So I am wondering your circle “ Tam Kun” wood horn sound like?

[#344] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Peter, The 40UF cathode cap on the 102D/G is sufficient. The paper cap is most musical and always is my best of choice. In turn the coupling cap can affect the sound performance much more than the cathode capacitor. So if I were you I would consider to change the coupling cap as oppose the cathode cap.

[#345] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Penndan Hing, I just can't help but to take my 44a back after Peter and I had fine tune this stuff. We have change a cap and 2 in/out wire only. That was the sound I wish to find for so many years. I think i will listening to it overnight tonight as i am still very exicting at this moment and just cannot get sleep. Heart on fire @@" The photo was my 44a and part of my 205d & 102 collection. Regards ![]()

[#347] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Peter I can't help but take back 44A back home for listening. But I for got to take back the CD u lend me and left at Mr' Wu's office in his studer 730. @@" I will ask Mr wu to take care of yr CD. How is the wire sound in yr 44A, does it sound right?

[#348] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 kkitkko Hing, Nice to hear that. The 44A kind of sound is also what I longing for.I just can't afford to own one. You collection of WE tubes, make everyone envy.

[#350] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 kkitkko, See the attached pics for the WE wire I use on my 44A. Outside dia is 2.2mm, strand and I believe it is 20 AWG 10 cores. Since the output end is pretty long (from front to back) so I cover the wire with shield to eliminated any possible noise/hum.

[#352] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Mr Ng, My 44A is transformer coupled, Mr Wu demonstrated to me the difference between using cap coupled and trans coupled, 5 seconds later, I gave up searching for better sounding coupling caps. You are right that 40-50uf is more than sufficient for the 102D/G cathode, likewise for the 205D, I tried other values, results not satisfactory though. Last year before moving to my new flat,I threw away nearly a hundred Mallory paper-wrap caps(orangle-blue color) leaving a few very old ones, now I regret, these caps sound great in the cathode, even better than those 60's green/dull yellow color types.Worst of all, they are seldomly found these days in ebay. The Alpha 1 sounds different from those using metal horns, it sounds bold, dynamic and very very smooth, even violins sound right, I can't tell its coming from a horn spk. Having said that, the Alpha 1 does not have the bloom of older horn spks which to me sounds a bit overwhelming. My choice of music varies from opera, Chinese opera, classical to heavy metal etc, I need a all-round spk system rather than one which is exceptional good in a certain kind of music and not very good in other areas.I do go to live concerts to ensure I'm on the right track on how music sounds like. I'm getting lazy for the past 10 years or so, I booked seasonal tickets of the HK Phil 20 years ago when I was younger.I'm not 100% sure the Alpha 1 is the ultimate spk system for me, but I know my small house cannot house a bigger one, otherwise, I'll certainly consider the original WE594A+4181 combo.

[#353] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Hi Peter, the 44A circuit design requires 40uf in cathode bypass, which allows a film cap to be used there. highly recommend you give it a try, even a solen will do. non-electrolytic cap makes a difference. Cheers

[#354] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 bambino hing, thanks for the advice. Do you have any other recommandations other than Solen, which of them have non-polar config. I did try the BG 100uf 160V non-polar, the BG sound is a little bright and too tight due to much higher capacitance. I treasure tonal balance, I'll give up beautiful tonal color to trade for a right tonal balance, may be I'm too bias on DIY standard.

[#355] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Hi ptsang, Sorry to jump in. BG NH takes forever to run in. Before that they sound tight and bright like what you said much worse than the FK. I almost threw them away before trying them in Super E mode. In Super E they sound neutral without any color and dynamic congestion. If the voltage is lower than 50V, I recommend that you give the N series a try.

[#356] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Peter, i just tried Obbligato Gold Premium Caps vs Solen (47uf) as cathode bypass. Obbligato is even more natural, a bit more air and don't have the 'plastic' sound. On comparison, Solen is still a little bit harsh and lean. If you want, you can try my pair before you make the decision. Cheers

[#357] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 bambino hing, thanks for the kind offer, I have several caps in hand awaiting testing and it takes time to taste the real color of a cap not to mention caps do perform differently at different positions. I will certainly test the Obbligato caps at a later time, I'll report back here when it's done. 1derful hing, long time no talk. The N series BG is really love and hate, I love it because it has an ultra low noise and transparent background, the bass region is exceptional with good tonal color, but the brittle texture bothers a lot even after 100's hours of burning. I have not tried the Super E config, does it apply to non-polar BG's only, if I need 50uf 50V, do I need 2x25uf to do the job, pls enlighten me and does it improve the break-in time required.

[#358] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 ptsang hing, You can have a look here http://www.dhtrob.com/impressies/super_e_cap_en.shtml I found his comments on FK,NH,Wkz very true base on my own experience. In fact I plan to stock some of the common value N, run them all in one shot for hundreds of hours for my future diy projects. There are just too many variables in a circuit which can affect the sound. By putting these BG N all into the circuit as a start, I can realize the potential of the circuit eliminating a lot of uncertainties. After that, other capacitors can be substituted to fine tune the sound. >Is super E-cap really better? To be shortly: Yes! The super e-cap outperforms any known capacitor in my system! It has the sound of thé best cap: No cap! It is fast and open sounding as I have never heard before in an amplifier, and all this preserving the tonal balance. This will remain, no matter how often a super e-cap is applied.. A big amount of the quality of my pre-amp is due to the use of super e-cap in the power supply and as cathode bypass!

[#359] Western Electric amps and 西電胡 Hi Peter Just try BG N type 47uf, the sound was too tight, I have change back to NH but i use the WE wire (the green one I show u last time) for the connection, then BG become sound right, not too bright and too thin. Do u remember that last time we ask Mr Wu to change the wire from Daven to RCA, I now also replace the wire between the 2 daven with the green WE wire, the sound change a lot, as u got some good stuff than mine, it really worth to try(actually a must), the changes just as big as last time we use the green wire.
